5. Book Review Of THE ORGANIC ROSE GARDEN
Happily, author Liz Druitt transcends movement dogma in The Organic Rose Gardento produce a valuable guide to environmentally responsible rose gardening.
http://www.country-lane.com/yr/druitt.htm
THE ORGANIC ROSE GARDEN By Liz Druitt. Dallas: Taylor Publishing Company, 1996. Photographs by Virginia Brown. Hardcover. 202 pages. Bibliography and index. Having once trained as a natural scientist, I still bristle a bit when I hear "organic" used to describe health-conscious or environmentally sensitive gardening techniques. Many of the manufactured pesticides so reviled by the organic gardening community are, strictly speaking, organic compounds, in that they consist largely of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen. Moreover, some of the naturally-occurring compounds marketed as "organic" pest controls are at least as toxic as the "artificial" pesticides they're meant to replace. Our real concern as responsible home gardeners should not be whether our pest controls and fertilizers are approved by some kind of organic certification board, but whether our garden practices are ecologically sound. I hope that as "organic" gardening matures, there will be less pseudo-religious reverence toward the naturally occurring, and more serious thought as to the actual environmental impact of techniques and substances we use. Happily, author Liz Druitt transcends movement dogma in

Plant breeders have given us roses that grow well under difficult conditions and bloom almost continuously from early summer to frost. Proper plant nutrition is easy and simple to provide with the use complete plant food that supplies all the vital elements needed from the soil. Insect and disease problems can be prevented easily with regular use of insecticide-fungicide that controls most chewing insects, sucking insects, and fungus diseases. With these aids, you can grow roses successfully. GOOD STOCK: Buy good plants, preferably No. 1, two years old, field grown and budded plants. Plants that are not pruned should have 3 or more heavy 18-inch canes. Pruned plants should have canes with a diameter of at least 1/4 inch at the top. Plants potted in tar paper pots are preferred by many gardeners since they can be transplanted most any time of the year. PLANTING: FEEDING: Hybrid Tea, Polyantha, Floribunda Types:

Dilip's Rose Page
Welcome to my rose page! I am an organic gardener and have been growing roses since 1995. I planted my first roses on March 11, 1995 in a 5'x8'x8" raised bed I built out of railroad timbers. I've had six hybrid teas there, but they've never thrived - early in the season I get some lovely blooms, but then the bushes look sickly. I think this is because as nearby trees leaf out, the roses just aren't getting enough sun. The creosote in the timbers can't help either. In mid-December 1998, I started working on putting in a much larger 4'x33'x7" raised bed along my driveway. It was a lot of work excavating about 18" down, getting cedar to build a frame, and filling it with great organic material - I didn't finish till around April. The new bed has some old roses as well as a variety of hybrid teas. It is a much happier garden and in the first season several of the roses have grown taller than I! From late February through mid-May 2000, I created a new 4.5' wide by 38' long bed perpendicular to the 1999 bed, and close to the front of my yard. This bed is divided into three sub-beds, each with seven hybrid teas or floribundas. It's not so difficult to grow roses - plant in a rich organic medium (try mixing well rotted horse manure, leaf mold, compost, earthworm castings, and lime)
