Rosarians were out clipping at UCI
    By Peggy Goetz
Irvine World News About 200 people ignored the thorns and pruned the roses in the Chancellor's Rose Garden at UC Irvine Saturday during a clinic hosted by the Rose Society of Saddleback Mountain and the Rose Society of Orange County. The garden is in front of the Barclay Theatre on Pereira Drive. Faculty, staff and students volunteered the time to make it a reality. The garden features 380 roses of 89 varieties. During the nine-month blooming period that begins in March, the colors of the garden can be seen from several campus locations. "You can't beat Southern California for roses," Joe Foraker said. He is known as the father of the UCI Chancellor's Rose Garden and led its organization and planting in 1997. He has about 100 bushes in his own yard in Mission Viejo.
