Remove the ones where winning the olympic medal isn't the high point of your career
[vote for against Basically, the number of olympic sports is just getting silly. And, there are a whole load of them where there is a world cup (or equivalent tournament) which is more prestigious than winning the olympic title (football is a case in point). So, we just remove these sports and leave the ones (e.g. athletics, swimming) where the olympic title is what people really care about. vincebowdren , Feb 08 2002 motto interpretation? http://www.halfbake...dea/Anabolympics_3f fits the 'higher' criteria [ chud Olympics would gain by returning to old ways http://www.usatoday...020225/3890387s.htm bristolz link No; gotta weigh in on vince's side here - olympic soccer is just silly. Olympic Sports Campaign to Aid Buckeye Sports The Department of Athletics secured more than $138 million in private support Sept. 29, 2002 The Ohio State University's five-year, $1.23 billion "Affirm Thy Friendship" campaign, the Department of Athletics secured more than $138 million in private support. As a result of these efforts, Ohio State now boasts some of the finest competition and support facilities and numerous newly endowed scholarships. Success during this campaign has secured Ohio State's place as not only the most comprehensive, but also one of the best and most financially stable athletics departments in the country. The Buckeyes have played host to NCAA regional baseball tournaments and have been selected to play host the men's 2005 NCAA Frozen Four Ice Hockey Championship. However, there is much more to Ohio State athletics than football, baseball, basketball and hockey. Featuring 35 varsity sports with more than 1,000 participants, the department has led the way in creating opportunities. While Ohio State certainly is known around the country for its success on the football field and basketball court, it is less well known for its rich history of excellence in Olympic sports. The university has nurtured many notable athletes who went on to compete or coach in the Olympics.

From Fetzer To Finley: Carolina's Olympic Sports Have Done It All This Year UNC looks to clinch Carlyle Cup Sunday.
April 20, 2002 By Dave Lohse
Associate Athletic Communications Director
Chalk up the 2001-02 athletic year as another sterling one for the Olympic sports program at the University of North Carolina. As the spring sports season begins its transition from conference championship to NCAA championship phase in the next few weeks Carolina's excellence has become abundantly clear once again. On Saturday, the Tar Heels' women's outdoor track and field team won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship, giving UNC four league titles this school year. Three more Tar Heel teams will be in ACC championship matches on Sunday in women's lacrosse versus Maryland, men's tennis versus Georgia Tech and women's tennis versus Duke. In addition to women's outdoor track and field, Carolina has also won ACC titles this year in women's soccer, volleyball and women's swimming and diving. Carolina is bidding this year to lead or share the lead in the number of ACC titles won for the 15th successive year. The last time any school won more conference championships in a single school year than Carolina was 1986-87. Wow! With the Sears Directors' Cup standings set to be updated again this coming Thursday, the Tar Heel athletic program currently stands a solid second in this year's rankings and barring a complete collapse in the spring, which appears highly unlikely, the Tar Heels are destined for a Top Five finish with a great chance to finish as high as second.

ROW NEW YORK LAUNCHES PILOT PROJECT IN QUEENS
July 22, 2002 Row New York, an educational and self-esteem building initiative to help underserved young girls through rowing, announced it has launched a four-week pilot rowing project on Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. These sessions will introduce girls from the Flushing community to the basics of rowing and team building. The project will be led by Row New York founder and head coach Amanda Kraus and will include eight girls recruited by the Flushing YMCA Beacon Center. The project aims to stimulate the values and benefits of discipline, rigorous training, self-esteem and teamwork to teenage girls and to develop a model that can be expanded into a larger, full year-round program. Row New York has launched this pilot project in conjunction with the YMCA of Greater New York, New York City's Department of Parks and Recreation and NYC2012. Row New York founder Kraus said: "I was inspired to found Row New York after working with a similar program in Boston that greatly enhanced the lives of its participants. Rowing taught them responsibility and commitment to a team, and it gave them strength and confidence as they took on greater challenges in their lives. I am thrilled to bring this same opportunity to the young girls of Flushing, and ultimately, New York City." Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe said, "We are happy that young women will be able to learn to row on Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. The lake has ideal conditions to introduce rowing to young athletes. Parks is proud to support programs that promote healthy and active lifestyles for New York City youth."

Rowing was first included in the Olympic Games in 1896. Women's events were added in 1976. One of the 3 water sports in the Games, it consists in a race over a straight 2 000 m route, in outdoor facilities which are usually shared with the canoeing events. Rowing is run by the International Rowing Federation (FISA). In the Olymic events, it allows 540 rowers to participate, 354 men and 186 women, divided into the following categories: - Standard men's: Skiff, Coxless pair, Double scull, Fours scull and Coxless eight.
- Light men's: Double scull and coxless four.
- Standard women's: Skiff, Coxless pair, Double scull, Four scull and coxed eight.
- Light women's: Double scull.
Facilities Main: The minimum requirements defined by FISA are: an area of contained water measuring 2 150 m x 81 m x 3.5 m with an additional area either end of the start and finishing line of 150 metres, and additional space either side of the tracks to manoeuvre the boats. The minimum capacity recommended by FISA is 25 000 spectators. There should also be a large area for the public.

Sydney will be British rower Steve Redgrave’s six consecutive Olympic campaign. At the past five he has won four gold medals and a bronze. This is a remarkable enough feat in itself, but to have achieved it from a society which regards such sports as rowing as little more than a novelty, is truly amazing. Redgrave has won his past two golds as half of a coxless pairs team with Matthew Pinsent (theirs were the only gold medals won by the British in Atlanta).
