Rowing was scheduled to be a part of the first modern Olympics in Athens in 1896 but the competition was cancelled due to high waves. Women's rowing events were added in 1976.
The Basics
  • Boats are also called shells.
There are two types of Olympic rowing events, sculling and sweep oar. The rower has two oars in sculling and one oar in sweep oar. There are two main distinctions between rowing and paddling sports such as canoeing. One is that the rower always sits with his or her back to the direction in which the boat is going. The other is that the rower uses an oar that pivots on an oarlock, not an unsupported paddle. The coxswain is a lightweight crew member who faces the rowers and directs them. Only some races include coxswains.

The Raritan Valley Rowing Camp is a 5-day program designed to give 12 to 18 year old beginners and experienced rowers expert coaching of rowing techniques and basics of training and racing. Dear Campers and Parents, The Raritan Valley Rowing Camp has enjoyed enormous success over the past several years. Since 1990, the camp has evolved into the most popular and respected program of its kind in the country. The outstanding coaching staff from the premier high school and college programs, the top rate equipment, and the variety of additional activities have made the Raritan Valley Rowing Camp a truly special place. Our philosophy has always been to maintain the highest level of instruction while creating a challenging and, most of all, fun environment. Limiting the number of campers each session has allowed our staff to get to know each camper individually, and give each one the attention, help, and motivation to succeed in our sport. The small groups also allow each camper the opportunity to row in small boats and scull, very important skills to improve overall technique and performance. This year, we will have even more small boats and sculling boats, including three quadruple sculls.

Sports Campaign To Aid Buckeye Sports
The Ohio State University’s fiveyear, $1.23 billion “Affirm Thy Friendship” campaign, the Department of Athletics secured more than $138 million in private support. As a result of these efforts, Ohio State now boasts some of the finest competition and support facilities and numerous newly endowed scholarships. Success during this campaign has secured Ohio State’s place as not only the most comprehensive, but also one of the best and most financially stable athletics departments in the country. The Buckeyes have played host to NCAA regional baseball tournaments and have been selected to play host the men’s 2005 NCAA Frozen Four Ice Hockey Championship. However, there is much more to Ohio State athletics than football, baseball, basketball and hockey. Featuring 36 varsity sports with more than 1,000 participants, the department has led the way in creating opportunities. While Ohio State certainly is known around the country for its success on the football field and basketball court, it is less well known for its rich history of excellence in Olympic sports. The university has nurtured many notable athletes who went on to compete or coach in the Olympics. This year, the Ohio State Department of Athletics has launched the $45 million Buckeye Olympic Sports Campaign. The campaign will enable the Department of Athletics to partner with the Office of Student Affairs to secure private support for the project that will replace Larkins Hall, the student recreational center that is also utilized by the department of athletics.
