Mission Statement Vital Statistics History ... History
History
The Early UWM Years The Beginning of the Century Between 1907 and 1912 UW-Extension correspondence study and classroom work in engineering and business were begun in Milwaukee. Local industries helped finance their employee's fees for Extension courses in shop mathematics, blueprint reading, mechanical drawing, and so forth. By 1921 the Engineering Bulletin listed 15 faculty (mostly part-time instructors from industry), and in 1923 a full two-year curriculum was offered in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Metallurgical, and Mining Engineering. The UWM Expansion The Establishment of CEAS While both the undergraduate and graduate programs remained in effect, the Director of Engineering now reported to the UWM Chancellor and the faculty became members of the new UWM faculty. A committee of 30 people chosen from leaders in the local community and industry, were charged with the responsibility of forming UWM. They recommended the formation of a separate University of Wisconsin College of Engineering in Milwaukee. The UW Regents finally approved the establishment of the "College of Applied Science and Engineering" at UWM in 1964, and the first freshmen class was admitted to the college in September 1965. Since then approximately 5,000 engineering degrees have been granted. The CEAS Expansion In 1971 the college's name was changed to the current "College of Engineering and Applied Science" and a separate thirteen-story Engineering and Mathematical Sciences Building (EMS) was constructed. Located on the western edge of the UWM campus, the EMS building houses facilities for both research and instruction, with modern equipment occupying over 75,000 square feet of laboratory space.

This site has a set of lessons for children to test the old saying, "The danger of the last frost
has passed when the leaves of an oak tree are as big as an oak tree." The children are involved
in hypothesizing, experimenting, and observing in this set of three lessons. This would
help the teacher integrate both the study of ecology and weather.
http://www.zipworld.com.au/~elanora/trees.html
This site has a large listing of other tree-related sites. It has a unit using Bloom's Taxonomy.
It also has many units integrating math, literature, music, etc. with the study of trees. It
also provides links to other related web sites for more information. This would enable the
teacher to plan cross-curricular lessons.

There are many links on this page that are science related. In particular, weather, space
exploration, and inventors. This would be useful in giving background information for the teacher.

46. UChicago Divinity School: Article
I have said something about my present projects, please bear But coming to SwiftHall to teach in RL as you resist buying into their rube goldberglike systems
http://divinity.uchicago.edu/research/criterion/spring2002/mark_l_krupnick.html
A POSTMODERN HUMANISM FROM THE SOURCES OF JUDAISM — MARK L. KRUPNICK — I thank my friends and colleagues—and I include my former students among my present friends. I also thank Sandra Peppers, who has been a supportive and loyal friend from the time I came to the Divinity School. I am writing these words before the retirement ceremony, but I think it’s probably safe to thank all of you for saying nice things about me. I shall probably wish, after the ceremony is over, that I had a CD of what you all have said to and about me. On the other hand, let’s face it, this event inevitably has about it a certain sadness insofar as it is a farewell ceremony. Given my fatal illness, which I will say more about as I go on, this event could be thought of as a “living funeral.” It differs from a conventional funeral in that I get to hear the wonderful things most people miss. So before I do anything else, I want to say that I am glad I am alive to hear what has been said about me this afternoon; I am grateful to the Dean and you in this room for acknowledging me in this way; and I thank the staff for once again laying a table with such fine fare. I have no doubt about it: a living funeral is always going to be better than the other kind.
I’m not sure you know the profound impact you have made, personally and scholarly, on your students . . .

Study Questions for Technology Education Semester Two Final Exam These questions are based on projects we have done this year with a major emphasis on second semester only. The answers are marked here for you to study. Your exam will be paper/pencil so you will not have access to this at exam time.
Video Production
  • The term "ad lib" means
    A: Reading from the script
B: Make up what they say or do on the spot
C: Reading from the cue cards
D: Working on the set What is the purpose of writing a script?
  • By writing a script you can organize your thoughts, know what each person will say and do and the camera man will know what instructions you want him/her to follow. There are other reasons too but that is most important.
  • What is a second generation video?
  • A second copy of a video is a second generation video. Each copy lessons the quality of the video.
  • Why is rehearsal of your script important?
  • A rehearsal keeps multiple ‘takes’ of a video scene to a minimum. You are more likely to do a better job.

Welcome to Mrs. Hueni’s web page!
The Science Club and Science Olympiad team are two of my favorite school activities because everyone involved is so enthusiastic. The Science Olympiad team creates a number of “build ahead” projects for the annual state tournament. They have constructed trebuchets, Rube Goldberg devices, 20-gram balsa wood towers capable of holding 25,000 grams, musical instruments, scramblers (car with a raw egg on it), and rubber band powered airplanes.
I am looking forward to a great year in chemistry class. My goal is for each student to have a good understanding of our chemical world. We will work extensively with fundamentals in the first year chemistry classes and delve deeper into the world of chemistry in the second year (AP) class. These are both laboratory-based classes. We will emphasize safe laboratory technique, observation skills, collecting and analyzing data skills as we participate the in the lab activities.
This web page is designed to keep you and your parents informed of upcoming tests, formal lab reports, projects, and daily work assignments. This is not a substitute for using your own organizational and study skills.
Although this website will be updated on a regular basis, it is a work in progress. There may be occasions when I change an assignment or test date in class. What happens in class takes precedence over any information this site may contain.

    CHEMICAL RUBE GOLDBERG PROJECT
The criteria for the 1999 projects listed below. PROBLEM: Through a series of energy exchanges in a time closest to 3 minutes the machine will produce a gas causing a change in the color of a solution.
    CRITERIA:
    • Each machine will have a minimum of 10 energy exchanges; at least 5 of these changes will be chemical and 5 will be physical. If the same energy exchanges are used, point deduction will be considered. The time requirement for the problem to be accomplished is 3 minutes. The energy used to start the machine will not be considered as one of the energy exchanges in the machine. Points will be deducted for excess stored energy (i.e. batteries). Points will be added for the use of alternative energy sources. Points will be given for a creativity to the problem solution.

SAFETY: A preliminary written schematic design will be submitted to be approved. Students will be required to calculate and/or determine the quantitative information concerning any reaction being considered in the machine. After the initial study of the involved reactions have been completed and approved, lab tests may be run. All tests will be using small amounts of chemicals.
    DUE DATE:
    • Presentations will be during the finals period.

Fiscal year 2002 saw the State of Illinois providing more funding for Argonne programs, making major contributions to such cutting-edge projects as the Nanotechnology Research Institute (NRI), the proposed Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) and I-WIRE. "The state government believes this is money well invested in its own economic development," said Argonne Director Hermann Grunder. "It's all tied to science and technology, which eventually creates jobs in the private sector." Projects funded by Illinois include: The NRI, expected to enable major advances in manufacturing, communications, health and agriculture. Illinois contributed $2 million to the NRI this year. RIA, which would create beams of short-lived isotopes for nuclear research. RIA also received $2 million in design funding from Illinois in FY '02, up from $1.65 million in FY '01.
