About Carnegie Mellon
... Research Centers Led by Larry Cartwright Real-World Course Leaps into Muck of Construction
Seniors in engineering and other studies prepare for careers in practical, hands-on projects that benefit the campus. Text by Ann Curran, Photos by Bill Redic and Glenn Brookes You can't miss Larry Cartwright on a construction site. At 6 foot 6 and 300 pounds, he towers above his students, all dressed in white hard hats. Now in his 15th year as teacher in the enormously practical Design and Construction course, Cartwright (E'76, '87) has taken his students from early non-glamorous "pure engineering" jobs, such as building cleaning tanks and retaining walls, to constructing decks, parklets and amphitheaters that clearly contribute to the ambience of outdoor life on campus. "I have a real eclectic group," Cartwright says, at the Baker Hall site as students hammer together wooden forms in preparation for a cement pour. Lapsing into engineering college shorthand, he says, "I have 18 civils, three mechanical engineering, one electrical engineering, one materials scientist, two sculptors, one architect.... I actually recruited people from Fine Arts." All students take part in both the design and construction phases in this very popular course.

PREP: Pre-College Experience in Physics July 1-26, 2002 Program Report Department of Physics and Astronomy, Bausch and Lomb Hall University of Rochester, Rochester, NY 14627 The program ran from July 1 st through 26 th The PREP labs are modeled after those taught in the University of Rochester undergraduate courses. They included a simple measurement lab in which each girl was given a different ruler to emphasize error analysis, verification of conservation of momentum with low-friction collision carts, and making simple telescopes out of only two lenses. The labs reinforced the concepts taught during lecture and gave the girls a hands-on experience so that they could discover physics concepts for themselves. They also impressed the importance of data analysis on the students and the fact that there may not always be a "right" answer. Many afternoons included guest presenters. The presenters were mainly from the University community, though they came from diverse backgrounds. Many women from the scientific community were invited to give talks. Through these talks, tours, and demonstrations, the PREP participants were exposed to many of the opportunities available to them in science. In addition to the presenters, the girls took tours of numerous campus facilities from chemistry and physics labs to the medical and nursing schools. Many of the girls became deeply interested in fields they had never before heard of, such as biomedical imaging and particle physics. For the majority of the students, the highlight of the program was the hands-on projects. Each week, a different engineering project was introduced. The girls worked in small groups of three or four to accomplish the given task, and "competitions" were held each Friday. The projects included building bridges out of toothpicks to support as large a mass as possible, self-propelled cars using rubber bands and/or mousetraps to drive up a ramp, Rube Goldberg devices to demonstrate as many physical principles as possible, and egg-drop contraptions that would keep an egg intact after a five-meter drop. Each week, the groups were mixed up, so that everyone had the opportunity to work with everyone else. The girls learned about planning and teamwork and were able to get to know each other quite well. In addition to weekly projects, we also engaged in shorter activities such as building simple circuits, taking and developing photographs with pinhole cameras, and an Excel tutorial.

I turned fifty this winter in Japan. Of my fifty years on this globe I've lived thirteen of them in Japan. I research and write about Japan, I speak Japanese (I've struggled with the language ever since Freshman year at college), I teach Japanese language and literature, I'm married to a Japanese, and my kids are bilingual. If fifty is 'old' then there's no doubt about itI'm an 'Old Japan Hand.' When the opportunity arose to serve my second stint as the Oregon Resident Director at CIE I was just as eager to come back to Japan with my family as I had been to discover a new world when I went to Kyoto thirty-years ago for my Junior year abroad.
One reason I enjoy Japan so much is that I find it is always changing. There is always something to surprise me. We gaijin love to follow and laugh about Japanese fads. Two years ago ganguro was all the rage: girls were wearing short skirts, foot-high platform shoes, dying their hair white and their skin brown-black. Now these girls are nowhere to be seen, but we can still take pictures of the silly 'white Goths' at Harajuku. Boys' hairstyles now are wonderful. At a collection of Waseda students I hosted in December I did a head count and found more Japanese men students styling their hair than women students.
In fact Japanese fashion sense has changed dramatically. It is much freer and more personal than I can remember. In the mid-nineties everyone had to wear black or gray. It was very convenient for spotting my wife, who wore the only red overcoat in a city of 30 million. Now you see long dresses, short skirts, pants of every style, clothes in every color. Young people change hair color and hair style as if they were changing t-shirts. Just look at the Japanese soccer team: black, red, blond, brown, Mohawk, shaved'anything goes.

    Food Oracle
    Counter Intelligence, Commonsense Thinking
The long term vision of the Food Oracle is an effort to ground ideas about food in ideas about culture. To this extent, understanding recipes, food, and the historical and social contexts of food can help advance our understanding of cultures more generally. In the commonsense thinking space, food is dually 1) a rich domain in which a "common sense" is present and felt (e.g. via recipe "procedures" like poach, braise, e.g. via implicit assumptions made by recipes), and 2) a domain whose semantics are finite, manageable, and more precisely defined than in the everyday world domain. To this end, we believe that recipe understanding can be a good way to investigate representations and mechanisms for commonsense thinking. A white paper on the Food Oracle projects is available. A prototype interface to the database is available

GOALS: Help people and myself simultaneously; be confident
    • Not only have confidence in my skills and competency to deal with problems, but also be aware of what I am not qualified to do and know how to act in such a situation. This idea is nothing special; my main goal follows.
    • Be able to balance (or unite) the concepts of knowledge, people, and myself in a way that is conducive to success. That's totally general, but basically boils down to being able to use what I know to help people, in such a way that we end up with a win-win situation. Whether that means that they learn something and I improve my reputation, or they get a problem solved and I get paid... This is explained in better detail later on.
Also: -Know how to motivate people.
-Know how to navigate costs and quality in various situations.
-Know how to choose between several options, and know for sure why I chose a particular option over another, in other words, be able to defend my decisions.
QUESTIONS TO ANSWER: How? and maybe some Why? in there too. Why not? for fun.

This fall is an exciting semester for the UEAB as we are continuing our established programs and implementing innovative new ones to better the college experience of Penn Engineering undergraduates. We kicked off the year with the successful Sounds of Seas competition, in which groups of Engineering freshman built Rube Goldberg machines that produce musical tones. The UEAB is continuing our always-popular Lunch with the Deans program as well as our Take Your Professor to Lunch program, which pays for lunch for both the professor and the student at some of the nicer restaurants around campus. An Alumni Speaker program and the For Engineers By Engineers Seminar Program are in the works for the coming spring semester. The UEAB's long-term goals include creating an Engineering honors program and half-credit courses focusing on the latest technology and topics.
