Rug Hooking Revisited
Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-549

Rug hooking is an art craft that originated in New England and became very popular during the years of the Great Depression. Old-time rug hookers would first draw a design on burlap and then pull cut strips of wool through the material to fill in the design. These forefathers of rug hooking used primitive style where they utilized all wool clothing and would hook any colored material that was available for this purpose.
Using a similar technique but a different style, guest Virginia Brown dyes, cuts, and hooks wool into incredible works of art. Her method, known as "fine rug hooking," starts with the lightest fabrics and goes to darkest or vice versa.
Virginia really enjoys her craft and considers rug hooking to be calming and satisfying. Her work is extraordinary because she dyes all her own wool, a process she finds to be challenging as well as rewarding.

Crafts - Rug Hooking
Primitive Style Rug Hooking — Try It
Not to be confused with the craft of latch hooking, rug hooking is an age old fiber art. This form of rug making uses a simple metal hook with a wooden handle to pull strips of woolen fabric through a burlap backing to form an even pile of loops. In this series of classes, you will be introduced to several aspects of primitive rug hooking. We will discuss basic techniques, wool collection and preparation, pattern design, special effects, and finishing. Try-It This class is designed to demonstrate the basic technique of rug hooking. The kit to complete one hit-or-miss star ornament includes: burlap pattern, cut wool strips, backing material, 8-inch snap frame and rug hook. There is a $25 fee payable to the instructor for the kit. You only need to bring small scissors. Completion of this class is NOT a prerequisite to participate in any of the other rug hooking classes.

Hooked in the Mountains Rug Show 2003
2003 Rug Show Theme: The theme for our eighth annual exhibit is, "Come Home to Vermont: Hooked Images, both Real and Imagined, of Friends and Family, Town and Countryside, Home and daily Life."
What is special to you about Vermont: your home, the beautiful landscape with its impressive mountains and changing seasons, lakes, rivers, endless pastures, villages, pastoral farm life, family, friends, and neighbors?
We hope this theme will inspire Guild members to commemorate some special scene, idea, memory or dream of Vermont, using a favorite hooking medium.
While creating a large, Vermont theme rug, we hope members will also join us in creating a 12" x 14" piece for our "Vermont Vignettes" exhibit. Burma Cassidy (802-767-9024, arikera@sover.net) dreamed up this project, and will coordinate the details.
New to the 2003 show will be a mini-exhibit of antique rugs and tools that illustrate different aspects of the history of rug hooking. Rugs from private collections will be on loan.
In our efforts to educate the public about rug hooking, this year the Guild will offer one-hour programs for school groups. The programs will focus on rug hooking, contemporary and historic rugs, and will feature a hands-on project for students. Museum interpreters will accompany the children on the tour and talk about different folk art motifs that appear in the rugs. Guild members will volunteer to discuss rugs, demonstrate hooking, and help children with projects.

    97. Origins Of Traditional Rug Hooking
Origins of Traditional rug hooking. He wrote three carefully researched, well illustratedinformative books on rug hooking now unfortunately out-of-print.
    http://www.wcushing.com/rug_hooking_origins.htm
Origins of Traditional Rug Hooking by Joan Moshimer NOTE: By the term "Rug Hooking" we mean the craft which employs a simple hook and strips of fabric - the strips cut from worn out clothing, curtains, etc. which was developed to give them new and useful life. The hook in one hand above the foundation material and the strip held beneath in the other hand, the hook begins pulling up loops from the strip which when repeated many times close together forms the surface of a rug. A distinguished American architect and scholar in the 1920s and 30s, William Winthrop Kent became interested in the hooked rugs of the humble housewives living in the New England states and neighboring provinces of the Canadian Maritimes, recognizing that he was looking at an art form with much distinction and potential. He wrote three carefully researched, well illustrated informative books on rug hooking - now unfortunately out-of-print. In the first, called THE HOOKED RUG, he set himself the task of finding out just when and where rug hooking began. The earliest evidence of the craft that he could find can be seen in a photograph on page 6 of his book, showing a small mat dating from the 6th century that is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This basic form of hooking apparently was practiced by the Copts from the 3rd to the 7th century AD. The Copts were descended from the ancient Egyptians. From his description of the Coptic process it seems as if their work was remarkably similar to our present day hooking. They made a fabric "which was based on the appreciation of the artistic possibilities of loops of colored wool left standing above the surface of the basic material"
