In fact, track and field is the group of events that comprised the core of the very first Olympics in ancient Greece . Today, while it might sound contradictory, track and field is more than just track and field. Did You Know? A sprint, hurdle, long jump or triple jump will not be recognized as a world record if the wind strength behind the athlete exceeds two meters a second (11.6 miles per hour). The sport involves the three major themes of running throwing , and jumping and can be divided into four disciplines: track, field, road, and combined. The

After experiencing the spirit and majesty of the Olympic Marathon, B.A.A. member and inaugural US Olympic Team Manager John Graham was inspired to organize and conduct a marathon in the Boston area. With the assistance of Boston businessman Herbert H. Holton, various routes were considered, before a measured distance of 24.5 miles from the Irvington Oval in Boston to Metcalf's Mill in Ashland was eventually selected. On April 19, 1897, John J. McDermott of New York, emerged from a 15-member starting field and captured the first B.A.A. Marathon in 2:55:10, and, in the process, forever secured his name in sports history. In 1924, the B.A.A. moved the starting line from Ashland to Hopkinton. In 1927, the Boston Marathon course was lengthened to the full distance of 26 miles, 385 yards to conform to Olympic standards. The Marathon Distance
The 1896 Olympic marathon distance of 24.8 miles was based on the distance run, according to famous Greek legend, in which the Greek foot-soldier Pheidippides was sent from the plains of Marathon to Athens with the news of the astounding victory over a superior Persian army. Exhausted as he approached the leaders of the City of Athens, he staggered and gasped, "Rejoice! We Conquer!" and then collapsed.

The Greek athletic games, otherwise commonly recognized as the Panhellenic Games, were an integral part of Greek life. They combined religion, sport, and music into extravagant festivals involving peoples throughout Mediterranean. Not only did they attract thousands of participants and spectators to their venues, but they also promoted solidarity among the various Greek city-states. By the Classical period, their influence was felt throughout Greece. There were four main games: the Olympic Games, Pythian Games, Nemean Games, and Isthmian Games. The games at Olympia were the oldest and most famous of these. They all began quite humbly as religious ceremonies. While the games had a small religious aspect throughout their history, this role diminished as time progressed. Mythological evidence suggests that the athletic events originally served as entertainment for humans and gods and were loosely associated with sacrificial offerings. At first they were purely local events most likely spanning two or three days, consisting only of dancing, running, and wrestling. The centrepiece of every Olympics is the track and field stadium. Stadium Australia has built the largest Olympic arena in history with 110,000 spectators able to see the opening and closing ceremonies, track and field program and the final of the men's soccer tournament. Under an agreement brokered by the Olympic Co-ordination Authority, the majority of the cost of the $A615 million stadium is being borne by the private sector with the NSW public having ultimate ownership of the venue. Stadium Australia has already hosted several world-class events including top-flight rugby league and union, American NFL and the FIFA All Stars.

How The Olympic Games Began
Nearly 3,000 years of Olympic history
The Olympics first started nearly 3,000 years ago in Ancient Greece . The ancient Greek civilization enjoyed many sports—including running, boxing and wrestling—because they believed physical activity and competition were very important. Every Greek boy was expected to participate in sports , because the Greeks believed the skills they learned in sports would make them better warriors.
In honour of Zeus
The ancient Greeks also believed religion was very important. Zeus was their greatest god. The ancient Greeks built a shrine to honour Zeus in the Valley of Olympia. Greeks gathered at the shrine to play their favourite sports as part of their religious ceremonies.
In 776 B.C. the ancient Greeks first recorded the results from their sporting events held in honour of Zeus. Every four years after that these Games were held, and because they took place in the Valley of Olympia , they became known as the Olympic Games

How the Olympic Games began
Thousands of years ago, people of ancient Greece believed the body was just as important as the mind. They participated in foot and chariot races and enjoyed boxing and wrestling.
The year 776 B.C. was the date of the first recorded results in a sports competition held during a ceremony to honour Zeus, the Greek god. The Games were then held every four years in the Valley of Olympia – and thus became known as the Olympic Games.
Since that time there has been a decline – and a rise – of the Olympic Games and spirit:

Former UB chancellor, president ran in finals of 5000-meters in 1920 Games in Antwerp
By ANN WHITCHER
Reporter Contributor Eighty years ago this week, a young collegian from Indiana was settling back into campus life after spending the summer as an Olympic athlete and competitor in post-Olympic events overseas. The 19-year-old Purdue undergraduate was Clifford C. Furnas (1900-69), who went on to a distinguished career as scientist, author and chancellor of the University of Buffalo from 1954-62, and from 1962-66, as the first president of the State University of New York at Buffalo, following UB's merger with SUNY. Furnas was among the finalists to run the 5,000-meters in the 1920 Olympics-or the Seventh Olympiad-which took place in Antwerp, Belgium. His Olympic run followed successes at intercollegiate competitions throughout the Midwest, and impressive showings in the Olympic tryouts in Chicago and a final meet at Harvard University. Olympic memorabilia, including a photograph album, scrapbook, track uniform, insignia and ribbons, are on display as part of the Clifford C. Furnas Memorial Collection, established by Furnas's wife, the late Sparkle M. Furnas. The Furnas Collection is housed in the University Archives, 420 Capen Hall. The photo album and scrapbook, in particular, bring to life the spirit and drive of a young runner preparing to take on the world.

The Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece for almost 1200 years beginning in 776 B.C. The sports were Pentathlon (comprised of Discus, Javelin, Jumping, Running and Wrestling), Running, Boxing, Wrestling, Pankration (a mix of Boxing and Wrestling), Chariot racing and Horse Riding.
Athens The Olympic revival began in 1896 when the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece with 245 athletes from 14 nations. Since then, the number of athletes, nations represented and the variety of spots have increased, with over 10,000 competitors from 199 countries participating in the 2000 Games in Sydney Australia. Salt Lake City Winter sports were added the Olympic Games as early as 1908 with figure skating. Ice hockey debuted in 1920. In 1924 the first separate Winter Olympic Games were held in Chaminix, France. Beginning in 1994 the Winter Olympic Games were scheduled to be in different years from the Summer Games, so now there is an Olympic Games every two years, alternating winter and summer.

Brief History of the Olympic Games
Ancient Olympic Games Chronology of athletic events added to the Olympic Games Myths and the Olympic Games Pelops myth ... Athens for Olympic Games of 2004
Ancient Olympic Games The Olympic Games begun at Olympia in Greece in 776 BC. The Greek calendar was based on the Olympiad, the four-year period between games. The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeus. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. The Eleans traced the founding of the Olympic games to their King Iphitos, who was told by the Delphi Oracle to plant the olive tree from which the victors' wreaths were made. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash, called a stadium. This was the only event until 724 BC, when a two-stadia race was added. Two years later the 24-stadia event began, and in 708 the pentathlon was added and wrestling became part of the games. This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included.

Athletics is the oldest organised sport and can be split into four activities - running and walking (track) and throwing and jumping (field). No one's sure when athletics first started but humans have raced and competed against each other since ancient times. Athletics includes cross-country, fell and hill running, as well as track and field: Track: sprint (100m to 400m), middle- and long-distance (800m to 10,000m), marathon, hurdles, relays, steeplechase, walk (20,000m and 50,000m) Field: high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, javelin, shot put, discus, hammer

After input from many of you, we came up with our historical marathon rankings. Please check out our final top 15/20 historical marathon rankings . We also hope to offer stories/biographies that will help to educate about the past of marathon running. The first story is offered below. The 1906 Olympic Marathon and William Sherring 15 Nov. 99 Chad Pawson In 1906, Athens was awarded a special Olympic Games by the International Olympic committee to mark the tenth year anniversary of the modern games. This Olympics came between the 1902 and 1908 Olympics and became known as the "unofficial Olympics." However, the games proceeded with all the flair and competition as any other games. The Greeks even built a new stadium and catered to the athletes showing them that Athens, Greece was the home of the Olympics. Sherring was born in Hamilton on 10 September 1878. At the time of the race he was 5"7’’, 120lbs. He worked as a brakeman for the Grand Trunk Railway in the Hamilton area and ran for St. Patrick’s Athletic Club out of Hamilton. The Globe wrote on 2 May 1906 that, "Sherring is one of the tribe of long distance runners that have made Hamilton noted throughout America, and have now spread their fame throughout the wide world. Their rise is directly due to the road races promoted by the Hamilton Herald, which have created tremendous interest in distance running."
