"This area has a long history of good track teams and Olympians," she said. "I think, per capita, we probably produce more Olympic distance runners than anyone else." After stoking up interest from friends at the state high school cross-country meet, Goodwin decided to organize a brainstorming meeting. That was in December 2000. By May 22, 2001, her group had burrowed through a tunnel of paperwork and logistical details and was able to announce the first Team USA Minnesota: nine runners who would receive coaching, training facilities, medical care and a roof over their heads while pursuing their athletic dreams. There is no doubt that Tollefson, who won 13 Minnesota high school cross-country and track titles and five NCAA crowns at Villanova, provided a huge boost when she agreed to join the team. Her presence sparked local interest, gave the program credibility and drew other talented runners.

Although Abebe Bikila was unable to win his third gold medal in the marathon at the '68 Mexico City Olympics, he made sure that one of his countrymen maintained Ethiopia's dominance in this historic race. Few people were aware that the two-time gold medalist had gone out to defend his title with a hairline fracture in his right foot, which was complicated by stiffness and circulation problems. Nevertheless, those gold medal aspirants followed him like the favorite that he was, until a crafty Mamo Wolde began to move to the front.

Shooting Sports have been part of the Olympic Games since the modern Olympic Games began in 1896. In Athens, Greece during the first Olympic Games shooters competed in two bigbore rifle and three pistol events. Seventeen Olympic events in four Olympic disciplines (rifle, pistol, running target, and shotgun) will be contested at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
Participation has grown steadily through the years. While only four nations competed in the shooting events in 1896, 423 shooters from one hundred different nations participated at the 1996 Atlanta Games in shooting.
In order for a shooter to compete in the Games, the athlete must shoot a minimum qualification score (MQS) for the respective event at one of the International Shooting Sports Foundation's (ISSF) supervised Championships during the four years between Olympic Games.
Women have been allowed to compete since 1972, participating with men until 1980. At the 1984 Games, they took part in a separate program consisting of three events, but they kept the right to compete with the men in the two mixed events - Olympic trap and skeet until 1992. At the 1996 Games those trap and skeet events were conducted for men only. However, a new event - double trap - was added in 1996 that allowed men and women to compete together.

of the World, 1998 and 1999. The Finns, like any reasonable people, accept that some folk need folk heroes and they do not dismiss fondness for sport and its heroes as a symptom of immaturity. On the contrary, they generally see sport as a commendable form of human endeavour. This may be because in this small society top athletes of either gender tend not to behave like overpaid prima donnas. Even when they are overpaid they remain recognisable to the public as mortals, people who live next door. In the 1920s, the early years of Finnish independence, the dominant sporting hero was the long distance runner, Paavo Nurmi , whose name was turned into that yawn-inspiring sobriquet "the flying Finn." Because he was so famous in his day, his country's name became known, too. This was at the time when Finland needed to establish a presence internationally as an independent sovereign state after the centuries of rule by Sweden followed by the years under Russian domination. The winner of nine gold and three silver Olympic medals in the 1920s, and the holder of a myriad world records, Nurmi was a loner on the track, dour and remote in his prime, introspective and disillusioned with his athletic performances later in life.

ick Radkewich runs the Garden of the Gods in the shadow of Pikes Peak on a shimmering jewel of a Rocky Mountain morning, nine months before the first Olympic triathlon in Australia. The Garden of the Gods: serpentine canyons of carmine sandstone, daggering against a cobalt-blue sky. Once a refuge for Utes and Apaches, later a beacon to prairie-schooner pilgrims, now a Colorado Springs city park and convenient workout site for athletes from the town's U.S. Olympic Training Center. The OTC provides weight-room and dining-hall sustenance to starving-artist athletes such as Radkewich, practitioners of the off-brand Olympic sports who orbit out of obscurity and into the network TV sunshine once every four years. Triathlon in particular will be soaking up the limelight at this year's Games. Thanks in large part to the sport's enormous popularity in Australia, the men's and women's races will kick off the first two nights of NBC's Olympic coverage. The course, consisting of a 1.5-kilometer open-water swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride, and a 10-kilometer run (a mere fraction of the epic distance covered in traditional Ironman-length events), winds through Sydney Harbor and past the landmark Opera House. It's the stuff of telegenic dreams, and an auspicious image boost for a sport that in the United States has largely been dismissed as the monotonous pastime of obsessive-compulsive geeks.

There were fewer events, and only free men who spoke Greek could compete, instead of athletes from any country. Also, the games were always held at Olympia instead of moving around to different sites every time.
