GAMMA SIGMA DELTA began at the Ohio State University December l, 1905, as a professional, agricultural fraternity for undergraduates called Delta Theta Sigma. Iowa State organized a Chapter in 1907 but as an honorary rather than as a professional society. Other Chapters were installed soon after at Land-Grant Universities in Pennsylvania, Oregon, Missouri and Utah, all adhering to the honorary plan. A conclave was held in Columbia, Missouri in May 1913, when the organization became fully honorary and the name was changed to GAMMA SIGMA DELTA . Chapters were added at Kansas in 1914 and at Auburn University in 1916. The Alabama Polytechnic Institute, as Auburn was then called, became the Eighth Chapter to be formed. Following a merger with the University of Minnesota's Agricultural Honor Society of America, a new constitution was drafted and ratified in 1917. It made GAMA SIGMA DELTA the Honorary Society of Agriculture and established the broad principles of faculty control. There are at present 47 Chapters of

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
AGRICULTURAL MEDICINE AND RURAL HEALTH
Krakow, Poland, 7-8 September 1995
Dear Readers,
This issue of AAEM is devoted to the proceedings of the international meeting held in Krakow, Poland, that dealt with a wide range of problems in agricultural medicine and the health of rural populations. The meeting was a special contribution of the Polish Agricultural Social Insurance Fund (KRUS), with the Jozef Dietl Specialist Hospital in Krakow and the Institute of Agricultural Medicine in Lublin as the main co-organizers, to promote occupational safety and protection of health in agriculture. A comprehensive coverage of the subject of the Conference is well indicated by the titles of the four Sections into which 34 contributed papers and keynote lectures have been grouped. The speakers represented the International Association of Agricultural Medicine and Rural Health and a host of scientific institutions. Most of the papers were given by the Polish participants what has created an opportunity of the promotion of our research on an international forum. All the participants of the Conference agreed that to make sure that our endeavours to meet the challenges of our time in the special field of agricultural medicine continue unabated, we must all share views and exchange up-to-date information; we must build on the achievements to secure future progress.

In all the project countries rural people are less educated than people in cities. In most of the project countries the level of education for rural women is even lower than that for men (Table 7). Only in Poland and Hungary is the level of education for rural women slightly higher than that of rural men, although in these countries the general level of education in rural areas is the lowest. The proportion of women educated to a high level is higher in all the CEE countries than it is in Austria.

About AgCal

Abstract
The World Wide Web (WWW) offers a medium well suited to the dissemination of information about conferences and workshops. The AgNIC initiative has created a WWW based calendar known as "Agricultural Conferences, Meetings, Seminars Calendar" or more briefly, AgCal. Its URL is http://www.agnic.org/mtg/index.html AgCal consists of a series of indexes that offer over 2,000 links to WWW pages containing information about mainly scientific meetings of interest to the AgNIC audience. As a rule, the calendar points to pages created and maintained by a meeting's organizers, but in some cases AgCAL will create a simple WWW page, mounted locally, and based on information posted by the organizer to a subject oriented mailing list or USENET newsgroup. AgCal also includes an index of agriculture-related calendars maintained by other organizations, currently numbering approximately 271. Easily the most difficult aspect of maintaining a system such as AgCal is identifying and securing information about the conferences themselves. To deal with this, the project has implemented a five pronged approach: 1) Regular monitoring of subject oriented mailing lists; 2) Regular monitoring of USENET newsgroups; 3) Regular review of calendars maintained by others; 4) E-mail solicitation to conference organizers; and 5) Use of WWW search engines.
