ARCHAEOLOGICAL PROJECTS AT FORT ROSS A rchaeological investigations in the Fort Ross area have contributed valuable information and helped to authenticate the various reconstructions. They illuminate the history of the early Kashaya Indians and the Russian and subsequent American settlements. The earliest work, recording sites for excavation, was done by researchers from the University of California Berkeley in the late 1940s. Excavation projects have been undertaken at various times over the years by archaeologists and anthropologists from University of California Berkeley, San Francisco State University, Santa Rosa Junior College, Sonoma State University, Cabrillo College, the University of Wisconsin, and the California State Department of Parks and Recreation. The Native American sites were first recorded by archaeologists in the 1930s and in the 1960s. In the 1980s archaeological work was extended from the coast to the ridge line northeast of the fort. Prehistoric occupation sites have also been examined at the Reef Campground and on the bluff up the coast from Fort Ross. In 1990 the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee assisted the Department of Parks and Recreation in a project intended to restore the historic Russian cemetery to its former appearance. The Department of Archaeology and Ethnology
The Department was founded in 1990. Its current head is the doctor of archaeology professor Aleksandr F. Shorin. The Members of staff in the Department have a variety of research interests, which are following:
  • Paleolithic sites of the Ural, Cave and Open-air art. The Neolithic and the Bronze Age of the Ural. The Early Iron Age of Steppe and Foreststeppe zone of the Ural and Western Siberia. Circumpolar Cultures: ecology and history. Early-States of the Ugrians in Western Siberia. Spiritual Culture in prehistory societies of the Ural. Ethnology of the Ural and Western Siberia. Industrial Archaeology. Experimental Archaeology.
Research Issues. In the framework of Paleolithic studies one of the fundamental research areas is connected with the Bogdanovka Paleolithic site in the Southern Ural. It is the only reliable site of the Middle Paleolithic with a well defined cultural stratum. Its investigation was conducted by Vladimir N. Shirocov, in collaboration with the Laboratory of Historical and Populational Ecology (Head Associated Member of Russian Academy of Sciences Nicolay G. Smirnov). This study answered a number of questions about the initial peopling of the Ural. Vladimir N. Shirocov continued his research in the Ignatievskaya cave, pertaining to the Paleolithic paintings. These paintings have some parallels in the Franco-Cantabrian area. In addition, he also conducts an analysis of Open-air art. Mr. V. N. Shirocov examines rockpainting as a component of ancient sacred places, basing the new dates and investigation of the rockpainting in the general context of the sites, including, beside them, the topography of rocks and cultural remains under them.

Book Series: CONTRIBUTIONS TO GLOBAL HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGY
This fascinating monograph employs a world system model as the basis for archaeological investigation of Russian America that relates local findings to global patterns. Author Aron Crowell examines Russian, Spanish, and American historical sources along with the archaeological evidence to uncover a preliterate culture that left no written record of its contact with European colonial powers. Crowell's particular subject is the indigenous Qikertarmiut people of Kodiak Island off the coast of Alaska. The special case of this tribe serves as a microcosm of the history of colonialism, demonstrating how early European capitalism impacted and, in some cases, destroyed indigenous societies. Contents

There are also Red Leicester bricks. These are still made at Ibstock in Leicestershire and are of the machine-pressed sandstone type. They were never made by hand. An example of a building in London made from Red Leicestershire bricks is the former PLA pump house for the West India Docks, West Ferry Road, E14 (TQ 372 801). This impounding station, still in use, was built in 1929 to maintain the water level in the nearby docks and contains electrically driven centrifugal pumps. We used to think this pumping station was built about 1914, which in fact was when a specification was first drawn up but more recent research has revealed that the original scheme was delayed, probably due to the First World War, and a modified pumping station building to house three pumps was eventually completed only at the end of the 1920s. By that date the Millwall and West India Docks had been joined together by the Millwall Cut and the new impounding station was able to maintain a high water-level throughout the combined dock system. Bob Carr Routemaster Visitors to Oxford Street will have noticed the large numbers of venerable Routemaster buses now in operation in the heart of London.
