A Russian Invasion
By James Busbee The exhibit commemorates the 125th anniversary of a most notable Russian-American event. In 1872, at the behest of President Ulysses S. Grant, the Russian Grand Duke Alexis visited the United States, traveling to 20 cities over three months. He arrived in Memphis on February 3, 1872, toured the city, and stayed at The Peabody. Many of the jewels are centuries-old relics of times in Russia as opulent as they were tragic. Even as the Russian people suffered under oppressive empires, their leaders indulged themselves with ever-greater extravagances of palaces and jewelry. The breadth and eminence of the Diamond Fund is matched only by the jewel collections of the British monarchy and the Shah of Iran. Some of the most famous pieces include a stick pin featuring a 7.6-carat blue diamond believed to have been cut from the famed Hope Diamond. A bracelet created in 1825 to commemorate Alexander I has a 27-carat, table-cut diamond (the largest in the world) set atop a miniature portrait of Alexander painted on ivory. Perhaps the most impressive piece of the collection is a sapphire brooch dating to 1862. The 260-carat sapphire, about the size of a doorknob, sits among 57 carats of diamonds.

Please to the Table
By Rachel Feit The first time I went to the former Soviet Union, to Kiev and to the Crimea, I steeled myself for what I imagined to be a culinary wasteland. Brought up on Cold War images of endless food lines set against spartan, gray buildings, I expected the cuisine there to be unpalatably bland. I was wrong. Alighting from the plane into a sunny summer day, I was greeted with a three-course meal of Ukrainian Borscht, cured roasted meat, and delicate cheese-and-jam blini. From that moment, the eating never stopped. I remember the fruit trees there, dripping with apricots, plums, cherries, figs, and olives. I was stunned to discover artichoke plants, rosemary, and arugula growing practically wild by the side of the road. In the cities, food vendors installed themselves on every corner, selling rice pilaf, little fried pastries, sausages, and dumplings. Meanwhile, the markets were crammed with foods both locally produced and imported. In terms of cuisine, I quickly discovered that an incredible amount of cultural diversity characterized the foods we ate; food there involved not just stewed beets, cabbage, and potatoes, but colorful, aromatic spices from Central Asia, nuts and olives from across the Black Sea, and foodways representing the most distant folds of the colonial sprawl that was once the Soviet Union. My strongest impressions of the three summers I spent in the Crimea inevitably involve the food. After my first trip, I reluctantly returned home, a pious devotee to Russian food.

Art of the State
Russian exhibit suggests government control of creativity can only extend so far By Angela Wibking Government control of the arts strikes a chill in the hearts of America's creative community. Government patronage in the form of funding, on the other hand, has them signing petitions and calling their congressmen. The truth is, you can't have the second without a degree of the first. If the government is holding the purse strings, someone or some group of individuals appointed by the government will be making determinations about who gets funded and who doesn't. Keeping the scales of control and patronage in balance is extraordinarily tricky, but growth and creativity in the arts depends on it. To see what happensand what doesn't happenwhen those scales get out of balance, head to the Tennessee State Museum to see an exhibition of paintings produced by Russian artists during 80 years of Communist rule. But be prepared for something of a surprise The nearly 60 works on view simultaneously confirm and refute every horror tale ever told about government control of the arts in the Soviet Union.

Arts and Leisure Last day at Russian Tea Room sees nostalgic throngs The Associated Press NEW YORK - The Russian Tea Room was jammed with nostalgic borscht fans enjoying martinis and caviar Sunday, the restaurant's final day. "I'm very upset," said Claire Strauss, sipping a Bloody Mary at the bar. "My husband and I used to come here all the time, for maybe the past 25 years. They have the best borscht in town." AP Russian Tea Room waitress Renee Maranki, of Blackwood, N.J., right, greets customer Nancy Smith, of Newport Beach, Calif., on the fabled restaurant's last day in New York. The restaurant, a beloved meeting spot for musicians, actors and publishers next to Carnegie Hall underwent a three-year, $30 million renovation recently. When it reopened in 1999, it never really regained its audience and a plunging economy made it difficult to stay open, managers said. "It was a very expensive project to build," said Michael Desiderio, the restaurant's general manager. "It never really hit its stride, and then 9-11 struck and it never bounced back." Chief executive Jennifer LeRoy alerted staff Friday that the restaurant would be closing.

    Cocktail Culture
By Devin D. O'Leary "Keep in mind that gentlemen, as a general rule, prefer their beverages dry, or of the less sweet variety. Such cocktails as Manhattan, Martini, Gibson, etc., etc., are most pleasing to them. While many of the fair sex follow closely with the men folks in this regard, there are many others who prefer the richer preparations, such as those containing portions of egg, much cordial or syrup.""Cocktail Bill" Boothby's World Drinks and How to Mix Them Jack Townsend and Tom Moore McBride in their tome The Bartender's Book (1951) summed up this dichotomy much less decorously than did Señor Boothby a score before: "It is safe to assume that the invasion of speakeasies by women was a major cause of the god-awful drinks of the time, since some of the worst, such as the Pink Lady, are still drunk almost exclusively by women. Happily, the ladies have become more civilized as they drink more frequently; our bartenders report that they are now inclined to duplicate the orders of the men they're with, rather than to call for syrupy slops." Here then are a few infamous Girl Drinks for the more "feminine" ladies out there ... and for the occasional man who's secure enough in his sexuality to order a giant pink drink with an umbrella in it.

One: Is there anything left of the author's combative, controversial depiction of war's atrocities on both Fascist and Greek Communist sides? Two: Is there anything left of the secondary plot involving burly soldier Carlo's homosexual pinings, which help to explain the heroic climactic gesture on which the story turns? Three: Is there anything left of - Well, of anything that gave the book substance, mystery and contrariness.

Wednesday, January 31, 2001 ST. PETERSBURG It is easy to understand why Rimsky-Korsakov's "The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya" has been called the Russian "Parsifal." Each opera mixes Christian myth with medieval legend in a way that gives off an otherworldly glow. Each also moves at its own ruminative pace. "Time has stopped," says a character in "Kitezh," just as in Wagner's realm of the Holy Grail time and space allegedly become one.
"Kitezh" occupies a hallowed place in the Russian repertoire, and after an absence of half a dozen seasons from the Kirov Opera, it is once again exerting its spell.
Plot details tend to confirm the Wagner link, but Rimsky rejected Wagner where his influence might have mattered most: in the music. Instead of ripe chromaticism, we hear serene, hymn-like melodies of diatonic songfulness (though "Parsifal" has a few of those too) as well as other tunes derived from folk idioms.
