61. Arts & Leisure: Soldier Of Fortune (Tucson Weekly . 01-17-00)
Ceramist and former teacher Wendy Timm believes in "arming the innocent."
http://desert.net/ww/01-17-00/tw_feat.html
Soldier Of Fortune
By Mari Wadsworth IF YOU'RE A professional artist, you basically have two choices: struggle in the conventional sense (which can be particularly insulting to those with a natural inclination to reject conventionality), or head for the hills and set up your own survivalist outpost where nobody will bother you. You don't hear much about the latter. By definition, they're an elite and elusive group. Most enigmatic American artists don't enjoy the luxury of emigrating to a villa in Southern France (like R. Crumb) or building a mansion in Ahwatukee (like Spawn creator Todd McFarlane). Ain't life a bitch. So three years ago, inspired by the Copper State's much-vaunted if short-lived reputation for separatist activity, 43-year-old artist and long-time Tucson resident Wendy Timm liquidated her life savings for a mortgage in the foothills. Now she's a struggling artist with a swimming pool. "I live way above my means," she gloats. "And I deserve it!" In actual income, she says nonchalantly, she's currently enjoying "the lowest-paying job I've ever had." Her near-acre spread in a quiet and unsuspecting Oro Valley subdivision is part survivalist theme park and part holy shrine to Saturday morning cartoons. It's also her working studio, and a complicated study in aesthetic composition.

E-mail this story Posted on: Friday, January 31, 2003 For opera troupe, it's a Russian evolution HOT at a glance The 2004 season By Wayne Harada Advertiser Entertainment Writer Tatyana (Aimee Willis) writes a love letter in Hawaii Opera Theatre's staging of "Eugene Onegin," the company's first performance in Russian. Lenski (George Dyer) is in love with Olga (Elena Bocharova) in the opera "Eugene Onegin," the opening show in HOT's new season. In this dance scene from the Russian-language opera, people end their day in the fields. With "Coming of Age" as its theme, Hawaii Opera Theatre launches its 42nd season tonight at Blaisdell Concert Hall, with the first-ever-in-Russian production here of Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin." "It seemed to be the time to finally try a Russian opera in Russian, and 'Onegin' is one of the most accessible," said Henry Akina, HOT general and artistic director since 1996. "The last time it was done here, in a translation in English by Robert LaMarchina, was in the 1970s, but the tendency in our business — now that we have supertitles (projected translations) — is to do operas in the original language."

KWLC Progresses Past Pure Alternative Programming By Adam Becker, Staff Writer
Bonnie Thorson and Jeff Stickler Boasting a music library as diverse as they get, there are over 10,000 reasons why KWLC remains the favorite radio station of the community. Whether a fan of the blues, techno, or anything in between, this fall's lineup offers something for everybody.
KWLC is broadcast on AM 1240. It has shows every weekday from 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. until two the next morning. The station broadcasts within a 40 mile radius.
"We are a real music station," said Music Director Thatcher Vagts (`98). "I open up 10 to 30 c.d.'s every day. We have a 10,000 album library. There is an enormous variety of music. We talk to the record companies on a day to day basis. We are constantly searching to find the best new music... We are the ones who influence what is played out there."
Football leads the pack of shows broadcast on Saturdays. The Luther football game is broadcast live by sophomore Lindsey Anderson every Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. After the game, the brodcast switches from the gridiron to guitar as senior Megan Cocoran plays the best of women's folk music. At 6 p.m. freshman Shawn Neary plays the blues. Freshman Kendra Nelson hosts a show of contemporary jazz music from 7:30 - 9 p.m.. Next up is freshman Ben McCabe and his show of progressive music. Rap, hip-hop and techno are played by senior Matt Becker at 10:30 p.m.. Closing out Saturday night's programming is freshman Mark Willard and his show dedicated to playing the best of rock music.

But to the dozen or so dogs romping in Robert E. Lee Park, it might as well be springtime in the Garden of Eden. They wrestle and bark. They chase and sniff. They frolic and play and dash about, and their owners look on like proud parents. "Dogs are living creatures and they need a place to run and be free," said Jessica Silverberg, 23, whose dog Cola, a shepherd mix, is among the happy pack of canines.
