business: Economics battles the environment over Russian fuel

Russian plutonium to be tested in Canadian nuclear reactors.
The plutonium will be flown to an undisclosed military base in Ontario or Quebec, then taken by helicopter to Chalk River Labs, Ontario, 190 km northwest of Ottawa, according to Canadian and Russian officials. An earlier scheme to ship the fuel up the St. Lawrence Seaway was dropped following protests from Canadian environmental groups. "This is the first Russian quantity of MOX that Canada is going to examine at Chalk River as a possible fuel for its nuclear power needs," Babelashvili said. "In Russia, it costs about $200 million to refuel a burner every four years using MOX," Babelashvili said. He added that Canada must be spending considerably more if it is studying the possibility of purchasing fuel from Russia for its reactors. He also noted the Native American Indian tribes also have strongly opposed transport of materials across their territories, with one group threatening physical blockades to prevent movement. Canada has been trying since September 1999 to bring the project to fruition. At that time, it announced that plutonium would shortly be transported from the United States and Russia into Canada and released details on a plan to have the Chalk River nuclear facility use MOX fuel in the reactors, Kudryavtsev said.

Guidelines for International Affairs Majors Nature and Purpose of the Requirement
The international field experience is designed to give International Affairs majors exposure to an aspect of the international environment in a substantive manner. Although there are many ways to fulfill the requirement, each requires a student to spend a substantial amount of time outside the United States, interacting with citizens, institutions and circumstances in the rest of world. Such interaction will both assist the student's coursework in international affairs and be informed by that coursework. What Have IA Majors Done in the Past?
Almost everything! One student spent a year in Cameroon studying at a local university; another took a year in Korea, studying in Seoul; several have participated in the Gordon/CCCU Latin American Studies Program, spending a semester in Costa Rica. Still others have participated in the Middle East Studies Program (Cairo), the Russian Studies Program, the Gordon-at-Oxford program. One student worked with a missionary group in Macao; yet another worked for a major US-based multinational in Munich for a term. The central guidelines for an experience are that it be:
    Outside the United States.

    • In the summer of 2001, the college launched its Executive Education program. The first custom program, for dozens of executives at a large North Carolina company, focused on applying e-commerce and information technology in a specific business setting. Also, the NC State Management and Technology Academy drew a class of 27 students for its first four-week session, focusing on teaching business fundamentals and professional skills to non-business students.
In October 2001, the College of Management completed the seven-year, $12 million renovation of Nelson Hall. The new Nelson Hall has five floors and 141,000 square feet of space. Seven executive classrooms, five traditional classrooms, a video learning classroom, a decision support lab and the board room feature state-of-the-art multimedia technology for teaching and learning.
In 2000, the college's undergraduate programs in business management and accounting, the Master of Science in Management and the Master of Accounting earned accreditation by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Accreditation brings the college into the select ranks of the best business and management schools internationally and makes degrees students earn from the college nationally and internationally competitive.

Russian business suffers from vodka culture
THE GOVERNMENT should do more to tackle alcoholism, which wreaks havoc in homes and businesses across the country. [photo: ITAR-TASS] The country must learn that hitting the bottle only makes things worse
The Russia Journal recently carried a cover story about Russia's vodka economics. In the same issue, a column by Tara Warner looked at how vodka has had disastrous effects on Russia and continues to wreak havoc on its society. I think the time is right to share a few of my own thoughts on and experiences of the subject.
Abuse of hard substances is an old Russian tradition and not a newly acquired habit of post-Soviet Russia. In the late 1980s, a financial director in our company - a man with unequalled banking credentials and expertise - once washed away a few cases of alcohol some companies had sent to us as exhibition samples.
Another, who never admits to being an alcoholic and has been consuming at least a half a liter a day for the past 30 years, actually takes pride in his ability to drink, drive and show up for work each morning. A constant traveler, he buys three-quarters of a liter of French brandy at the Moscow airport before his monthly London flight and finishes it by the time the plane lands in London. Moreover, he can tell you the location of the aircraft by the amount of alcohol left in the bottle, something that never stops amusing his fellow passengers.
    An economic cause
Until the mid-'90s, I used to be surprised if a bottle of brandy, usually a quality Armenian brand, was not poured along with coffee into my glass at an 11 a.m. meeting. It became so much a part of the status quo in so many high places that it stopped shocking me after a while.
