Variant transliterations of his name include Tschaikovsky and Chaikovsky. He is a towering figure in Russian music and one of the most popular composers in history. The son of a mining inspector, Tchaikovsky studied music as a child. At 19 he became a government clerk and at 21 entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied composition with Anton Rubinstein. He graduated in 1865 and taught theory and composition at Nicholas Rubinstein's Moscow Conservatory from 1865 to 1878. An annuity from his wealthy patroness, Mme von Meck (whom he never met though he corresponded with her for 14 years and dedicated his Fourth Symphony to her in 1878), made it possible for him to devote himself entirely to composition. Tchaikovsky wrote 11 operas, four concertos, six symphonies, a great number of songs and short piano pieces, three ballets, three string quartets, suites and symphonic poems, and numerous other works.

Russia
Introduction [Top of Page] Background: The defeat of the Russian Empire in World War I led to the seizure of power by the communists and the formation of the USSR. The brutal rule of Josef STALIN (1924-53) strengthened Russian dominance of the Soviet Union at a cost of tens of millions of lives. The Soviet economy and society stagnated in the following decades until General Secretary Mikhail GORBACHEV (1985-91) introduced glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring) in an attempt to modernize communism, but his initiatives inadvertently released forces that by December 1991 broke up the USSR into 15 independent republics. Since then, Russia has struggled in its efforts to build a democratic political system and market economy to replace the strict social, political, and economic controls of the communist period. As the 35th Chess Olympiad nears completion in Bled, Slovenia, the 136 men's teams and 92 women's teams have made it the largest Olympiad ever. The participants across all of the men's teams (four players and two reserves) plus the women's teams (three players and one reserve), represent the greatest gathering of chess talent ever seen. By comparison, when the first official Olympiad took place in London 1927, only 6 of the 16 teams could muster a reserve to complement the four player teams. That event was won by Hungary, ahead of Denmark and England. There was no separate women's event. The 1927 Olympiad was preceded by two unofficial events. The first, Paris 1924, was organized to coincide with the 8th Sports Olympics. It was an individual event where the scores of the best players representing each country were combined to calculate a team score. Czechoslovakia won.

The Case for G.C.S.E. Russian
Russian is taught in very few schools around the country and consequently has a rarity value. This means that as few people know Russian the demand for specialists is greater than supply, especially now that Russia has opened up to the West. It is closely related to many other (Slavonic) languages such as Ukrainian, Polish, Czech, Bulgarian and Serbo-Croatian and often studied with them at universities. Russian is spoken as a second language or first foreign language in many East European countries.
The demand for Russian in business and commerce has grown rapidly over the last four years as the country has begun to stabilize after the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991. Since 1993, for instance, British exports to the Russian Federation have more than doubled. (See article on display unit near N10 in Leverhulme House)

Of course, the best idea is to go straight to a search engine such as Infoseek, Yahoo or Alta Vista for help. A large number of the sites related to grammar are linked to each other. Everything is available on the Internet; grammar rules and examples of each; colleges that contain lessons and tests; explanations of punctuation rules and sites that merely 'talk' about the English language and the rules governing it. There are even sites that have all of the above. I have attempted to find a large sampling of the previously mentioned web sites that deal with grammar, punctuation, and writing.

Course Objective/Description
Russ 2001, Intermediate Russian Language and Russian Culture I, is an intermediate course that emphasizes proficiency and communicative competence at the Intermediate-low level in the four basic language skills: speaking, writing, reading and listening as defined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Proficiency Guidelines. The course is intended for students who have already learned the fundamentals of Russian: the structure of the simple sentence, the types of relationship between the words in a sentence, and the basic rules of conjugation and declension.
In this class the students will review the basic grammatical and syntactical structures of the Russian language and study more advanced grammatical topics. The course is designed to help the student acquire practical mastery of Russian and maximize his/her ability to communicate in Russian. Oral proficiency, comprehension, and vocabulary building will be emphasized. Careful attention will be paid to pronunciation in classroom activities. Small group and partner/pair activities will be used to encourage students to use Russian in meaningful, communicative situations. In addition, students will continue to intensively explore Russian culture and contemporary Russian society.
