Brief. The Bottom Line A glimpse of pre-literate Rus. Full Review Storytelling is what makes us human. Other distinctions have been proposed. But birds, otters, chimps, and many other animals use tools. And animals communicate at least as well as we do. Not only can birds imitate the human voice, but other methods, posture, proxemics, pheromones, color, can all be just as useful as vocalizations, often leaving less ambiguity. And religion? Souls? Who can say. The one thing humans do have a monopoly on is storytelling. The ability to tell of events or thoughts occurring in distant or unseen places, of words spoken long ago, or never. Of people who lived before, or never. The ability to communicate deeper than words. This is what makes us human. The family album of Rus, the tales of old Russia, provide a link to the past, to a Rus separated from its European destiny by the Tatar (Mongol) Yoke. A past distilled to us through the evolution tales experienced under the Yoke and after, until transcription began to claim them in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. These tales take different forms. Myth. Legend. Folklore. Sung epics. A survey of these creatures is entombed within

    Russian Byliny
Russian legend is epitomised by the celebrated byliny stories, which means "that which has been". The byliny are divided into two cycles: one about bogatyri or 'elder valiant champions', and the other about younger heroes. The first cycle is the older in origin and is full of mythological elements. The Russian music box shown on the right depicts several elements from the younger cycle which describes the adventures of Ilya Murometz and other bogatyri warriors. Some of the characters in this illustration are described in the text below.

    Russian Music Box by Palekh
    Who was Ilya Murometz?
Ilya Murometz is the most famous of the mighty bogatyr warriors, said to have lived in the twelfth century. Ilya of Murom, a peasant's son, has sat motionless for 33 years. One day two travelling pilgrims stir him (see top left of Music Box above) and exclaim "Arise! Go forth! Thou shalt become a puissant bogatyr". From that moment on he becomes a warrior of extraordinary powers and the defender of the Holy Russia. He procures a horse which flies through the air 'above the motionless forest and a little below the clouds scudding across the sky'. Ilya follows the pilgrims' advice and sets out to find the mightiest bogatyr of them all - Svatogor.

The Bathhouse at Midnight: Magic in Russia

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It includes a great deal of information on herbal magic, zagorovy (spoken spells), categories of magical practitioners, divination, omens, amulets, animal lore, etc. all from ancient texts previously unavailable to the Western, non-Slavic speaking person.
Encyclopedia of Russian and Slavic Myth and Legend

Although I would not completely steer anyone away from purchasing this book, I found it was not well researched and fairly disappointing. Footnoting is also nearly non-existant so resources cannot even be checked. If you need to own everything out there on Slavic Mythology, by all means buy it. If you don't, save your $45.
Entering the Circle: Ancient Secrets of Siberian Wisdom Discovered by a Russian Psychiatrist
A wonderful story about a Russian psychiatrist's accidental entry and initiation into the world of the Siberian Shaman. This book is supposed to be true and autobiographical. I don't know whether it is or is not, but I found the book valuable anyway. The Russian "Lynn Andrews" story but a bit more believable.
Essays on Russian Folklore and Mythology

I took this book out once on iter-library loan. Most of the information on this website on the Poludnica on the Deities page was received from this book, but other than that my memory of it is rather faint. An out of print item, it may still be found used on Amazon.

The stories are written in an interesting, entertaining way, easy to read aloud if desired. Some Russian myths are very confusing, though, for those who are used to the coherence of Grimm's fairy tales. In my opinion, the best part of the book aren't the fairy tales themselves, but the informational paragraphs that precede them. Most stories have some explanatory introduction, teaching readers about such things as house spirits called the Domovoi, and the ways that the spirits of girls who died young have of tormenting the living. Overall, this book gives a wonderful look at Russian folktales and mythology.
