Medieval Russia Links and Research
Current Projects Costuming Food Miscellany ... Research Resources The links on this page are merely a selection of my most-used links. A much, much larger list of dead links can be found at the Russian Knowledge Page . I am the one responsible for updating (or not updating) the site, so my personal links eventually find their way there. I don't exactly know why I decided to devote most of my free time (like I'm not busy enough as is) to researching old Russia, but these things happen. As a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism (see my SCA page ), I felt a need to choose a persona that I could re-create. I had taken Russian in high school before finding the SCA and it seemed a logical transition to take on a Russian persona. Little did I know what this minor interest would grow into. Besides, nothing I do is allowed to be easy. These pages are devoted to researching Russia before Peter the Great came into power, what a number of people regard as the middle ages of Russia. For my purposes I define the Middle Ages of Russia as about 600 CE to about 1650 CE. Here you will find links devoted to Russian costuming, culture, food, history and anything else I can get my hands on. The Slavic and East European part of my research is a bit smaller.

    The dialectics of political history
In the history of various nations one can observe the same cyclical recurrence: the beginning of a complete cycle of political development is the primordial natural democracy; later on it leads to the dictatorship of the ruling elite headed by the representative monarch, which gravitates towards the absolute monarchy, to stagnation, and the end of the statehood comes as the result of the attempts to establish actual autocracy.
Thus, Ancient Shumer priests assembled a public meeting on the sacred territory (the territory of a temple) chaired by the High Priest - ensi, and the people made their own decisions on all the major issues of their life. At wartime there was a rise of lugal’ – the military leader, who later usurped the power and ordered that the priests should create a new mythology, which would say that his power "had been given to him by Heaven". The image of the major military leader transformed into the image of the God-man, the deputy or the anointed sovereign of God on the Earth. But when the Shumer king Naram-Sin proclaimed himself the incarnated god and autocrat, his kingdom collapsed and disintegrated, and his people were exterminated by enemies. The ashes of the Shumer and Akkad Empire gave birth to Babylon which followed the same historical turn.

It is perhaps surprising that Prince Grigory Potemkin has not more often come under the magnifying glass of biographical scholarship. His name has been assimilated into contemporary parlance in a sense that has come to be associated with the Russian nation itself. He has become the embodiment of the brilliant and imposing facade, masking the squalor and dilapidation within, the rotten apple that has become of his old Empire. This has particularly been the case with the often referred to and little understood 'Potemkin villages'. The name of Potemkin has become legend, even having a titular role in the Revolution that was to scar Russia for 74 years. Like most legend he is rarely understood and has become couched in a mythology that only serves to further blur this most unique figure. This scholarly achievement is despite the fact that, in deconstructing the Prince's early life, Montefiore has to rely largely on the spurious accounts of figures such as Saint Jean and Georg von Helbig - figures that the author freely admits to being 'myth-writers'. While the ambiguity of his subject's early life is deftly handled by Montefiore and his account littered with caveats, it merely serves as a background to his later and more impressive rise to the very top of the Imperial hierarchy. The position of power held by Potemkin is almost unfathomable in the modern context of democratic control and the cult of checks and balances. It is likely that this is the reason his power has seemed to dilute with each re-telling and criticism, often founded on envious portrayals released after the Prince's death, colours many accounts. Montefiore falls into no such evidentiary traps.
