Tourism Outward Bound A followup on the tourism market N THE March issue we ran a tourism update Some 1000 companies and organisations from more than 80 countries presented themselves. Turkey, Cyprus, Italy, France, Greece, Spain, Austria, Israel, Dubai, Egypt, China and Switzerland had the largest foreign pavilions. There were about 130,000 visitors. Cyprus, for example, had some 100 tourist enterprises participating, including a large number of hotel owners. The Cypriot pavilion was set up by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation. Mr. David Hammond, Director of ITE Travel Exhibitions (the organisers), expects the industry to continue developing in Russia in spite of the current crisis. Farther afield Hong Kong companies echo the sentiment. Although only nine Hong Kong companies attended this year, compared with 17 last year, "it was noticeable how busy the Hong Kong stand was this year with all of our trade partners constantly occupied giving quotations for potential business," says Don McDougall of the Hong Kong Tourist Association. "Many of us were surprised as to the number of Russian travel companies who were optimistic about short to mid term future outbound business. Despite the recent economic downturn and continued slide of the Russian currency, the trade were more positive about their business for Hong Kong than last year, that is, prior to the downturn." Russians are looking for new places to go The HKTA's McDougall agrees: "The growth in interest for Hong Kong did not come as a surprise given that Russians are travelling further afield and are constantly looking out for new destinations."

Well, as with just about anything in Russia, the answer depends on exactly how you ask the question and whom you ask it of. On the one hand, countries around the world and numerous individual inbound travel agents in these countries report major drops in business since August 1998. A World Tourism Organisation (WTO) report in mid-November said that arrivals in some popular European destinations such as Spain were down by as much as half. And Mr. Alan Sautiev, General Director of Business Service International (BSI), a Moscow travel company, some 40% of Moscow travel agents have gone bust. (BSI was established in 1991 and has grown to control some 40% of the Moscow market for tours to the UK; in 1993, the company opened an office in London.) But still a strong core?
