Rwanda Culture International awareness of the two main ethnic groups in Rwanda is unfortunately mainly based on the fact that one tried to wipe out the other in the mid-1990s after a long period of cultural suppression and tribal bitterness. The Hutus, who comprise nearly 90% of Rwanda's population, were originally Bantu-speaking farmers who for most of the past five centuries found themselves under the regal thumbs of the minority Tutsis. A large cross-section of the Hutu tribe was responsible for the attempted genocide of Tutsis and the murders of Hutu moderates in Rwanda in 1994 - in the past, they have themselves been the subject of Tutsi-orchestrated killings in Rwanda and neighbouring Burundi. Tutsis, who make up less than one-fifth of the population, were originally nomadic pastoralists who wandered down into Rwanda in the 16th century and quickly asserted control over the local Hutus. Bolstered by support from Belgian colonialists in the early 20th century, Tutsis continued to rule the ethnic roost until Rwandan independence in 1962. Last but by no means least, the Twa pygmy group - the original inhabitants of Rwanda - make up the remaining 1% of the population. Kinyarwanda is the language most widely spoken in Rwanda, though you won't find it being spoken in any other African countries. English and French are pretty much tied for second place linguistically, though French probably has the

Rwanda has a rich history and culture. It was long time regarded as a mysterious kingdom with a legendary military force which was carefully bypassed by the Arab traders and the great Nile Explorers. John Hanning Speke was already welcomed to the court of Kabaka (King) Mutesa I of Buganda in 1862 while the first European visited Rwanda only 30 years later. The Germans found one of the best organized pre-colonial kingdoms of East-Africa. The three ethnic groups (Bahutus, Batutsis and Batwas) lived together, spoke the same language (Kinyarwanda) and had the same culture. Rwanda was once together with Burundi and Tanzania part of the German East African colony and became a Belgian protectorate after the first world war. On your way to Butare you can visit in Nyanza (actually Nyabisindu) the former Mwami's palace (King's palace) and the seat of the feudal monarchy. The palace has been reconstructed to its 19th century state and shows a traditional dome that can be compared with the Kabaka's palace of Buganda (Kampala, Uganda).

OVERVIEW Rwanda is a small landlocked country, it borders on Uganda in the north, on Tanzania in the east, on Burundi in the south and on Congo in the west. Kigali is the capital of Rwanda. The country is dominated by a central plateau made up of steep mountains and deep valleys and has therefore received his subtitle "Land of thousand hills". The average elevation of the plateau is about 1.700 m. On the western side of the plateau you will find Rwanda's principal geographic feature; the famous Virunga chain of volcanoes which extends towards Congo and the Ugandan border. It's in the Virunga that one can find Rwanda's most important tourist attraction: the mountain gorillas!
Rwanda has without doubt more to offer than the mountain gorillas. Here are the most important topics:

People's memories of Rwanda's horrors run deep
The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, based in Arusha, Tanzania, was the first court to prosecute a head of government for genocide. It has had its problems in the years since the 1994 bloodbath in Rwanda, and as Andrew Harding reports, it is still hard work. I have started scribbling this down in the visitor's gallery of court number three. There is a thick sheet of bullet proof glass in front of me, and beyond it a brightly lit, air conditioned room full of lawyers, judges, and three slightly bored looking defendants. The defendants were brought in about 20 minutes ago - shuffling past me in handcuffs and smart suits. Two former Rwandan politicians and soldier. One was wearing a bullet-proof vest.
The exact number killed in the genocide is still unknown
I felt myself flinch when they suddenly walked in. I had never seen a genocide suspect before. They may be innocent until proven guilty, but the stench of their alleged crimes soils the air. It is an odd feeling sitting in this modern, expensive courtroom in a shabby building, in a remote corner of Tanzania.

To promote culture in rwanda means also to call upon respect of human rights andgood governance in order to contribute to building a more human rwandan society
    http://www.nur.ac.rw/mission.htm
Historical Background Mission NUR and Statistics University Organs ... Home To provide teaching at a higher level
The main task of the NUR is to transmit scientific knowledge to its students in a way that new ideas may come out and professional aptitude be acquired. To organize scientific research
Research activities at the NUR comprise all creative works undertaken in a systematic way in order to increase scientific and technological knowledge, including the knowledge of man, culture and society, also making good use of that knowledge in new situations.
The scientific research at University level is not only lecturers and researchers' affair but also that of students in licence and doctorate, as it is inscribed in their final papers (dissertations, doctorate and specialization theses). In this way, the development of scientific research contributes to the improvement and the strengthening of education structure. To provide service to the community
This task works hand in hand with the two mentioned above. Our University is aware that its credibility lies in the need of serving the community where it originates. By providing knowledge and know-how to the community, the NUR contributes to the full development through its various and adequate services to the needs of local population. To promote culture
The three tasks mentioned above are means which enable the NUR to participate to the enrichment and promotion of culture. Culture comprises both traditional and modern aspects by the fact that it increases technological and scientific knowledge in such domains as Sciences, Technology, Arts, etc…
