OTHER NEWS Improving safety on the farm IN the last 7 years (1995-2001), 146 people lost their lives on Irish farms. Of these, 36 were children. Last year alone saw 24 fatalities in the farming community, seven of which were children. Simply put, an Irish farm is one of the most dangerous workplaces in the country. In an effort to reduce these shocking statistics, Teagasc, in conjunction with the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), are to hold educational events for farmers aimed at improving safety on their farms. The HSA is promoting these farm safety events in order to reduce accidents in high-risk sectors. The Authority has identified agriculture as a priority sector in 2002 and it is committed to completing 1300 farm inspections by the end of the year. Tom Beegan, Director General of the HSA, who himself comes from a farming background, has urged all farming families to attend the events in either Kilkenny or Galway and seize this opportunity to learn how to prevent accidents on their own farms. In addition to an informative brochure (available in our publications section), Farm Alarm consists of a theater-based workshop (performed by Theatre at Work ) that explores various stressors that have an impact on the safety, health and quality of life of farm families throughout the Midwest. Several studies show a direct connection between a person's level of stress and their potential for an on-the-job injury. Stress is linked with numerous illnesses and diseases such as heart disease, ulcers, hypertension, and infection. With farming ranking as one of the nation's most deadly industries, we believe that many farm safety and health decisions are directly influenced by the high stress level in agriculture. To reduce injuries and occupational illness among farm families, we must work to help farmers manage stress. The workshop is made interactive with the audience through the mediator who coordinates the discussion throughout the performance. The script was based largely on interviews with Minnesota farm families during which they talked about the influences of stress in their lives and described how successful families can cope with stress.

This report examines four scenarios for government assistance to agriculture based on the concept of ensuring some minimum standard of living. Lower income farmers would benefit relatively more from the safety net scenarios, while farmers producing selected commodities benefit relatively more from current farm programs. Farm households in the Northern Crescent, the Eastern Uplands, the Southern Seaboard, and the Fruitful Rim all would generally receive a higher level and a greater proportion of benefits than under current programs. Food Safety and Inspection Service United States Department of Agriculture Washington, D.C. 20250-3700 Food Safety Features Slightly Revised October 2001 Turkey - From Farm To Freezer "How long can a turkey be kept in the freezer?" This question is often heard by the food safety specialists answering USDA’s Meat and Poultry Hotline. Although the optimum freezing time for quality best flavor and texture is 1 year, consumers are usually surprised to learn that, from a safety standpoint, frozen turkeys may be kept indefinitely in a freezer. Callers ask hundreds of other questions about turkeys – from the time they are hatched on the farm until they make it home to the freezer. Although turkey is enjoyed year round, the peak time for buying, cooking, and storing whole turkeys is the November and December holiday season. This is the time we see a large increase in the number of whole turkeys for sale in our local grocery stores. To ensure that the supply of whole birds is adequate to meet consumer holiday demands, each year during the month of May, millions of turkey eggs are put into incubators. After about 4 weeks of incubation, a baby turkey (poult) is hatched. The poults are then moved from the hatcheries to barns that are environmentally controlled, providing maximum protection from predators, disease, and bad weather. For the next 4 to 5 months (depending on the desired market weight), these turkeys roam freely around the barn, eating their way through many pounds of feed (consisting mainly of corn and soybean meal along with a supplement of vitamins and minerals).

However, hypothermia can occur when it's wet, windy and up to 50 or 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Working Outside in Winter When you hear about hypothermia, you usually envision someone stranded in a terrible winter storm. However, a form of hypothermia can occur when it's wet, windy and up to 50 or 60 degrees Fahrenheit. This condition is most common in cold weather, but infants and the elderly can develop hypothermia at temperatures greater than 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Hypothermia develops when a person gets so chilled that their body is unable to warm up and their natural defenses against cooling start to fail. The chilling conditions of hypothermia set in when the body loses heat faster than it retains heat. Farmers and others who work outside for hours at a time are the most susceptible to hypothermia. Contact with water can bring hypothermia on even faster, be-cause water cools your body temperature 25 to 30 times faster than air. If you are drenched from rain or perspiring heavily, you will lose body heat faster than you would under dry conditions. If you have to work outside in wet conditions, you should try to dress appropriately. Proper clothing includes rain gear, gloves, sturdy work boots, and headgear. About half of your body heat escapes through your head, so wearing a hat can slow down that process. The common symptoms of hypothermia include: uncontrollable shivering, cool skin, rigid muscles, weak pulse, a slow reaction time and slurred speech.
