Safety on the Family Farm
With more than 350 locations across rural America, Cargill is deeply connected to the people who live, work and raise families on our nation's farms. In 1992, after several farming accidents and fatalities near Cargill facilities, Cargill realized that it needed to do something to promote safety on the family farm. Since that time, Cargill has been the leading corporate sponsor for Farm Safety 4 Just Kids (FS4JK), contributing more than $700,000. In 1997, Cargill joined other concerned businesses to sponsor the Progressive Farmer Farm Safety Day Camps. In addition, hundreds of Cargill employees have been directly involved with farm safety programs in their communities.

Web posted at: 10:43 p.m. EST (0343 GMT) From Correspondent Jeff Flock LEIGH, Nebraska (CNN) Beef production is the biggest part of the U.S. food industry, which in turn is the largest segment of the American economy. Beef processors have also taken a lot of heat recently when it comes to food safety. So just how does beef go from the farm to the fork? The story starts with artificial insemination. At farms and ranches, such as the Settje Ranch in Leigh, Nebraska, insemination makes it possible for one prize bull to breed with the best of the heifers. CNN's Jeff Flock reports
3 min., 2 sec. VXtreme streaming video "It's definitely turned into a science," says rancher Dean Settje. Once pregnant, the heifers start calving in January. About half of the calves will be used as breeding stock. The other half will be sent to slaughter but not before they're fattened up. Theatrical Presentation Addresses Stress Reduction, Safety Messages to Farm Families Although entertainment is the main purpose of most theater productions, a new play about stress also has the health and safety of Minnesota farm families in mind. The play will be presented in northern Minnesota at the following locations: Thief River Falls on Thursday, February 18, at 6:00 p.m. at the Northwest Technical College and in Crookston on Friday, February 19, at 6:00 p.m. on the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Campus, in the Salhlstrom Conference Center, Brown Dining Hall. Both of these performances are free and open to the public. A light supper will be served, also free of charge. Farm Alarm will also be presented at the Potato Growers and Small Grains Expo on Tuesday February 9, at the Fargodome in Fargo, ND. Farm Alarm is part of a new University of Minnesota Extension Service project called "Partners for Farm Health and Safety." It's funded by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and involves three regional coordinators working with U of M faculty and staff on the St. Paul campus. Carolyn Weber, Partners project coordinator in the Red River Valley, says stress is an increasing concern in farming today. "Early in this project, I talked with dozens of people to find out which farm health and safety issue they are most concerned about," she says. "The response was overwhelmingstress."

Sydney Eye Hospital encourages eye safety during Farm Safety Week
During Farm Safety Week, specialist staff from Sydney Eye Hospital are asking farming communities to play it safe and protect their eyes when working. “People tend to most appreciate the gift of sight when they are deprived of it,” said Clinical Nurse Consultant (Ophthalmology), Jillian Grasso. “Often, it only takes a moment of carelessness for vision impairment or irreversible blindness to occur,” she said. “In 2000, Sydney Eye Hospital had 859 presentations for preventable eye injuries, with the overwhelming majority being males, particularly in the 26-45 age group. A significant percentage of these cases came from rural districts within NSW.” “We believe that ninety five percent of eye injuries are preventable,” she said. Common causes of vision loss on the farm include activities such as chipping, sawing, grinding, chopping wood, using power tools, hammering, welding, dusty work environments, bright sunlight and use of compressed air and chemicals. “We encourage people to always use the appropriate protective eye wear, such as goggles, safety glasses or a face shield, for the work being undertaken. Many injuries occur because people wear the wrong safety equipment for the task they are doing.”

Arkansas Farm Bureau You’ve heard of the post-holidays blues. It’s when all the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season is over, and we’re all sitting around twiddling our thumbs, trying to gear back down to our normal-non-holidays pace, and down in the dumps because we got Uncle Harry an orange-and-pea-green tie, forgetting that Uncle Harry hates ties, orange and pea green. Well, cheer up! (That’s an order.) July was National Bison Month, October was Rice Month in Arkansas, and anytime is Trout Month if you have any left in the freezer. In observance of these months, but mainly because we wanted to give you something different enough to chase away your January-February-Cold-as-a-Welldigger’s-Toes Blues, we offer you three recipes this issue significant in that, if for no other reason, they are a little different. October was Rice Month, but November held more significance to the daughters of certain farmers in our state. That’s when they vied for the title of “Miss Arkansas Rice.”

The National Safety Council says agriculture is far and away the nation’s most dangerous occupation. And it has been for many years. Today, however, an individual can get hurt in what we might consider an everyday activity. We don’t necessarily need to be involved in something "dangerous." "I think people today are a little more careless in their daily living than they used to be," says Andy Guffey. "Maybe it’s because we’ve had it so good for so long in this country. "We’ve advanced in the area of personal security and safety, probably due mostly to the nature of the news. But we seem to have fallen down in our routine ‘carefulness.’" So over the years, Farm Bureau has developed an extensive and thorough safety education program, and taken it out all over the state, into schools, churches, civic clubs and other venues. Guffey and Jeremy Wesson are Farm Bureau’s safety coordinators.

CHECKLIST
This Farm Health and Safety Checklist has been prepared by the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture with financial assistance from the Canadian Agricultural Safety Program (CASP) and the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods. The project was initiated by the Newfoundland and Labrador Farm Safety Committee, comprised of government and industry representatives, and working under the auspices of CASP. In February, responsibility for carrying out the project was transferred from the Committee to the Federation which willingly accepted this task, recognizing that farmers may prefer to participate in a project dealing with such sensitive issues as farm safety if it was conducted by the industry itself. As such, the Federation assures complete anonymity and confidentiality for any participating farmer. Government agencies, especially the Food and Agriculture Branch of the Department of Fisheries, Food and Agriculture, fully support our farm health and safety initiative. Their interest has been further demonstrated through cooperation to ensure that a Farm Safety Seminar be held in conjunction with the upcoming Annual General Meeting of the Federation in mid-March. The Federation appreciates the Department's continuing interest in farm safety issues. The cooperation and assistance of the Canadian Coalition for Agricultural Safety and Rural Health, through the Canadian Agricultural Safety Program, must also be recognized. It is hoped that the Newfoundland Farm Health and Safety Project will continue to be conducted in harmony with the Coalition's efforts nationally.

Special report: Foot and mouth disease
Peter Hetherington Monday March 5, 2001 The Guardian There was renewed concern about the Northumberland farm at the centre of the foot and mouth epidemic yesterday, with the local MP criticising lax safety procedures in the run-up to the outbreak and questioning the continued use of pigswill as an animal feed. Meanwhile, anxious neighbours of Burnside Farm, near Heddon-on-the-Wall, said they were dissatisfied with official explanations that nothing could have been done to curb activities at a pig unit labelled squalid and a disaster waiting to happen.
