Research
Key Research Topics: Over a hundred publications cover my research interests that began in 1954 with rock magnetic studies applied to geological problems, went on to marine geophysical surveys across the Irish Sea, Celtic Sea and Southwest Approaches areas and extended to large scale explosion seismic experiments to determine crustal structure in several areas around Britain and across the East African Rift Valley; included radiocarbon dating at Birmingham, gravity surveys in West Greenland whilst at Lancaster, earthquake risk analysis in Ghana, and, for the past 25 years, research on the use of seismic reflection survey techniques to explore deep into the Earth's crust and upper mantle as a basis for studying continental lithosphere dynamics. I helped to found the British Institutes Reflection Profiling Syndicate (BIRPS) in 1979 and was actively involved in its research until 1992, mainly north of Scotland (MOIST, DRUM), across the South Irish Sea, Celtic Sea and English Channel (SWAT), southern North Sea (MOBIL), southern Baltic Sea (BABEL), the western Mediterranean (STREAMERS) and the Banda Arc east of Timor (BANDA). Between 1980 and 1992 my deep crustal interests extended to involvement in the European Geotraverse (EGT), supported by the European Science Foundation (ESF), which crossed Europe in a swathe from the North Cape of Norway to Tunisia. This was followed by work on the thermo-mechanical modelling of continental lithosphere under lateral compression to determine the conditions and timing of melt generation.

http://www.abal.com/training.htm
Alastair Beach Associates Ltd offer a series of field and classroom based courses in structural geology designed for geoscientists and engineers.
Field courses include:
  • Lossiemouth - for reservoir characterisation. Helmsdale - for footwall degradation processes NW England - for fault seal and reservoir
characterisation Gulf of Suez - for rift tectonics and structural geology in exploration, fault seal and reservoir modelling Utah - for reservoir modelling, seismic interpretation and structural evaluation. Somerset - for 3D fault visualisation and implications for seismic interpretation.
We also run in-house structural geology workshops and courses, where companies can choose which structural modules they would like included, at what level they would like teaching to be pitched, and the location of the course, either in company offices or at a field location.
Modules covered in our courses include:
  • extensional tectonics workshop compressional tectonics workshop strike slip deformation salt tectonics improving structure maps with fault analysis understanding fault seal use of section restoration and other structural modelling techniques
Courses are tailored to suit your particular needs, and can include your own data if required. All courses include comprehensive course notes and field guides.

Faults: geometries and properties from seismic to subseismic scale
ABAL's research into faults and faulting began in 1992 with a 5 year programme of field investigation based largely in the Gulf of Suez. Gross extensional fault geometry, modification by later events and the insights this gave into cross section restoration were the initial focus of this work. Because exposure is superb, investigation into more detailed relationships between large and small scale structures, the character of fault zones themselves and properties of fault planes became the later focus. Field work from other areas, principally from good outcrop locations in northern UK, was added, and in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, generation of damage in sandstone reservoir analogues in the lab was also included.
The important results of this work, some of which are published, have impacted on many facets of our business:
  • Our ability to evaluate seismic interpretation and mapping (seismic scale structure) is enhanced, e.g. through better understanding of the character of fault linkage, the distribution of throw along faults, and how faults should look in 3D. We have developed practical applications of fault population analysis in interpretation evaluation and fault modelling.

WEATHER WATCH: TRIP DELAYED TO FRIDAY 21st DEPARTURE
Wednesday morning: Roads to south are apt to be poor tomorrow. We'll have an easier time Friday. Trip Weather as of Wednesday 3/19 (Take the longer term with a grain of salt, especially the low temperatures, which seem a bit onthe chilly side, but overall it seems that the big storms are this week and after that clears out things should be pretty reasonable). Second storm now forecast farther south, so first day or two unsettled to damp. Friday : Highs low 40s with occasional rain or snow showers, decreasing into the evening. Cold night with a shower possible with temperatures in the upper 20s.
Saturday : possibly to 60 with some showers, drying through the day. Dry with lows that night about freezing.
Sunday : Temperatures warming as we descend off the Plateau to about 80 and lows Sunday night in the 40s.
