PRESERVING DIVERSITY
"Few indigenous societies have withstood
the onslaught of western culture." BY PAUL COX Editor's note: Paul Cox, director and CEO of the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Hawaii, was awarded an honorary doctorate of science by U of G Feb. 23 during winter convocation. Cox, who studies the medicinal and health effects of chemical compounds produced in plants, gave the following convocation address to graduands of the College of Biological Science. W hen I first met Epenesa Mauigoa, she seemed unremarkable - a diminutive 73-year-old who tended her infirm husband in their modest fale or hut on the outskirts of Apia, Western Samoa. True, some of the plants growing in her garden were unusual, but I didn't expect anything extraordinary during my first interview with her. Did she know anything about herbal medicine, I asked respectfully. "I know a little," Epenesa quietly replied. Then for the next three hours, as I rapidly typed on my laptop computer, she related the most detailed account of Samoan herbal medicine I have ever recorded. By the end of our sessions several weeks later, she had taught me the details of 121 different herbal remedies she carefully mixed from 90 different species of flowering plants and ferns. The 37th remedy Epenesa told me about caught my attention. She claimed to be able to treat "fiva samasama," a term used to describe hepatitis. "

But I would like to pursue a masters degree with a paper on homosexuality from a Samoan perspective that would be written for educational purposes, because I believe some of the stuff that has been written about us is quite wrong.
University educated fa'afafine respondent, Samoa.
  • Now that homosexuality is relatively as a controversial issue in popular culture, transgenderism has become the new sexual of the media. In the weeks leading up to writing the first draft of this paper, transgenderism appeared on New Figure 1 : At Auckland's Pasifica Festival, February 2001 Zealand television screens in the prime time Ally McBeal , the teen parody show Popular , and the adult comedy Sex in the City , while Auckland's lifestyle magazine Metro featured an 'expose' on the hijra of India, complete with colourful illustrations. Auckland has a special relationship with non-Western forms of transgenderism fakaleiti The Samoan word fa'afafine literally translates as 'in the manner of a woman'. Fa'afafine are biological males who express feminine gender identities in a range of ways.

    ABOUT SAMOA - HISTORY

From archaeological evidence, it would appear that Samoa was first inhabited at least 3000 years ago by the Austronesian-speaking Lapita people, who left a trail of distinctive pottery evidence as they migrated across the Pacific. It is thought the Lapita people came from Fiji, which had been settled from what is now Indonesia.
Legends and family genealogies tell of frequent contact with Fiji and Tonga from the mid-1300s, no doubt with long sea journeys in the great wooden boats of the Pacific. Samoa was first discovered by the Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen in 1722 as he passed by looking for the great Southern land, and later named the Island of the Navigators by French explorer de Bougainville. There was some European contact in the early 1800s, and early settlers included refugees and beachcombers. The Christian missionary, Reverend John Williams, arrived in Savai'i in 1830, heralding in major changes for the Samoan people.
Britain, the US and Germany all courted Samoa, and in 1889 signed a treaty in Berlin that gave the Samoan islands an independent government with British, American and German supervision. However, later that year, Britain relinquished its interest in the country and Germany annexed Western Samoa and the United States annexed Eastern Samoa. The New Zealand army occupied Western Samoa in 1914 and the League of Nations gave New Zealand a mandate to administer the country in 1919. But from 1926 the Samoans resisted New Zealand's rule with non-violent action culminating in the Mau uprisings. After the Second World War, the country was made a UN Trust Territory, with New Zealand's role being to guide Western Samoa to independence.

Eco-Orbit is happy to publish more news from the Eco-front on that Pacific Island... NEW LOBBY FOR SOUTH PACIFIC ECO-TOURISM A group of Pacific Islanders have recently formed the Samoan Ecotourism Network (SEN) so that they can gain muscle as a single group. SEN will act as an inbound ecotour operator, actively promoting Western Samoa as an ecotourism destination, both among potential travellers and within the travel industry. This involves more than just marketing the `product'. The group has committed themselves to acting as an environmental body, promoting responsible and 'sustainable' tourism and assisting with the conservation of natural resources and indigenous culture. Sites of ecotourism significance are to be enhanced and members have further committed themselves to helping small tourism businesses to get started in declared conservation areas. "SEN is actively encouraging the distribution of tourist dollars to the rural areas, especially to those villages struggling for cash: often the only alternative many villagers have is to over-exploit their precious and limited natural resources (the very substance of their culture).", explains Steve Brown, who is one of the forces at work in the initiative.

The many thousands of birders now regularly using these pages prefer to read something written by someone who can see the place from an insider's point of view. They know the best spots, not just the ones that overseas visitors usually visit or that are on the normal birding trip itineraries. Each introduction carries the e-mail address of the contributor so that birders can get in touch with them if, for example, they are planning a trip. Fa'a Samoa
Fa'a Samoa, means the Samoan Way. This is an all encompassing concept that dictates how Samoans are meant to behave. It refers to the obligations that a Samoan owes their family, community and church and the individuals sense of Samoan identity. The concept of respect is also very important. You must always respect you betters, this includes those older than you, matais, ministers, politicians doctors and teachers. This unquestioning demand for respect is taking its toll in modern Samoa as the younger generation, which is invariably better educated than its predecessors, constantly finds itself trying to balance the demands of a conservative Samoan society with its knowledge of the world, increasingly gathered from overseas education and experience. This has lead to one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Fa'a Samoa is also evident in the legal system which is actually two seperate systems, a western style system administered by a police force and justice department, and a traditional system administered at a village level. The two systems do occaisionally come into conflict with one another but generally things work smoothly enough. Modified: 23/11/97 Matai System

The word matai means chief, and is an honour that is bestowed upon someone. The role of the matais is very complex and interwoven deep into the fabric of Samoan culture and history. Matais have family, civic, political and prior to the arrival of the European, religious duties to perform.

    Department of Sociology and Anthropology
North Dakota State University COURSE DESCRIPTION: ANTHROPOLOGY 495, FIELD EXPERIENCE: ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD SCHOOL, AMERICAN SAMOA. An archaeological field school will be conducted in June, 1997, that will involve excavations at two or three archaeological sites in American Samoa, in the South Pacific. American Samoa is a territory of the United States and consists of seven islands a short distance south of the equator. The Samoan Archipelago also includes four primary islands in the independent country of Western Samoa. The Samoan chain is located on the western edge of Polynesia and the islands were first settled around 3000 years ago by seafaring migrants from the west who were the first to occupy the Fiji-West Polynesia region. From these early colonists, with their distinctive culture known as Lapita, Polynesian culture evolved and eventually spread throughout the Polynesian triangle. The course will be conducted over a three week period between June 2 and 23. Current plans are to test one or two sites on the island of Ofu, and one additional site on Tutuila Island. The final selection of the sites to be excavated must await an on-site assessment of the educational and research potential of each site, as well as the acquisition of permissions from land holders.
