  • The best history of Tuvalu is H. Laracy's Tuvalu, A History . It was published in 1983. The People's Lawyer by Philip Ells is an amusing and insightful account of a young VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) lawyer's spell in Tuvalu. The book caused great interest in the island when it was released - everybody knew some of the characters personally. Transit of Venus - Travels in the Pacific , by Julian Evans, is a travelogue of the author's mordant, Dantean boat-hopping around the Pacific. While focussing on more developed locales such as Fiji and Western Samoa, his bleak, jaded view of the 'decay' of the Pacific is fascinating in light of 'advances' in Tuvalu. In The Happy Isles of Oceania - Paddling the Pacific , the perpetually morose Paul Theroux vies with the above author for the title of Most Cynical Pacific Traveller. It's a tie. The Material Culture of Tuvalu is an ethnological study of the peoples of Tuvalu. Australian economist TI Fairbairn's Tuvalu: Economic Situation and Development Prospects was written in 1993, but is probably already out of date. For a better understanding of Tuvalu's place in the regional economy, though, it's still worth a look.

    Western Samoa,

independent island nation in the southern Pacific Ocean, located about 2900 km (about 1800 mi) northeast of New Zealand. It occupies the large western portion of the 480-km (300-mi) long Samoan archipelago which is divided at longitude 171° west; the Samoan islands east of this line form the United States territory of American Samoa. After World War II (1939-1945), Western Samoa was a United Nations trust territory administered by New Zealand. It became independent in 1962. Apia is the country's capital, largest town, and commercial center.

About SPICIN - Organization History In October, 1987, the South Pacific Islands Criminal Intelligence Network, SPICIN, was created by the 17 police executives of the South Pacific Chiefs of Police Conference (SPCPC) during the 16th Annual Conference hosted by the American Samoa Government Department of Public Safety as a direct result of growing crime problems in the Pacific and a weak information sharing process among the affected nations. Commissioner Saul stated:
"Experience has shown that the Pacific Island territories are used as transiting points for drug running to our larger neighbors of New Zealand and Australia. During the past decade, a number of major incidents are recorded on this. In fact, there currently is an operation going on in Vanuatu in this regard. There has always been a ready assistance forthcoming from our larger neighbors when hard intelligence has indicated a bilateral or multilateral crime problems. However, I am of the view that the time is fast approaching when there should be established a regional crime, drugs, intelligence unit to coordinate and disseminate information for unified action to combat what I see as increasing problems. I, therefore, suggest initial discussion in this form on location, staffing, funding, and terms of reference before approaching our respective governments to ask their approval for the establishment of such an organization and then assistance with accommodation and technology from our larger neighbors."

    About us
Send me a Brochure Tripbuilder (Shopping Cart) Send me a Quotation ... Pacific News Member of Samoa About the Country People Samoans are the largest group of full blooded Polynesians in the world and have retained much of their ancient tradition and culture. Traditional tattooing is an intricate ancient art of Samoa and young Samoan males are tattooed with complex symbolic designs, from the lower chest to the knees. Samoan (Polynesian) is the native language, however English is widely spoken and is the official language. History These islands were first settled about 3,000 years ago and are accepted as the cradle of the Polynesian culture. In 1768, French navigator Louis de Bougainville sighted Samoa and called them 'The Navigator Islands', because of the many Samoans sailing small canoes far from the sight of land. During the 18th century vast plantations producing copra and cotton were developed for export and Apia became a major commercial centre in the South Pacific. Annexed by Germany from 1899-1914, and then New Zealand from 1914 (after WWI) until independence in 1962, Western Samoa finally gained self government in 1962. Nature Beautiful fauna and flora are found on both islands. Savai'i particularly, has lush tropical rainforests housing many fascinating and exotic bird species.
