Van Vihar is about 18 kms from Dholpur and Ramsagar is another 18 kms from Van Vihar. As a matter of fact, these are actually two separate wildlife sanctuaries. Van Vihar, located on Vindhyan plateau, supports a rather open stunted growth of Dhok and Khair trees. It is inhabited by animals like Sambhar, Chital, Blue Bull, Wild Boar, Sloth Bear, Hyena and Leopard.

Critter Care Conferences
Farm Sanctuary is hosting its popular shelter training conference for people interested in starting, operating and developing farm animal shelters. Our intensive two-day seminar includes basic shelter administration, shelter fundraising and shelter media/outreach programs. Participants also receive farm animal care training including basic health care needs, proper restraint techniques and animal housing and facilities design. Participants also have an option to work directly with the shelter staff on days before or after the conferences to get direct, hands-on experience working on the shelter. The Critter Care Conferences are being held at our Watkins Glen, NY and Orland, CA farm animal shelters. The fee is $100 per person and includes Saturday and Sunday lunches. Due to animal care instruction, registration is limited to 30 people. Early reservations are recommended and available on a first-come, first-serve basis. All cancellations are non-refundable. Conference registration ticket, accommodation information and shelter directions will be mailed to all confirmed participants.

Obviously you will want to work with a veterinarian for diagnosis, surgical procedures, etc., however most sanctuaries have found that is more economical to have sanctuary staff administer medicines, vaccinations, and parasite treatments rather than have a veterinarian perform these basic animal care needs. You can also reduce your basic health care costs by purchasing medicines, vaccinations, and other veterinary supplies through wholesale animal care and/or veterinary supply catalogs. HOUSING: Of course, each species has its own specific housing and living environment requirements. Most likely, you will need to adapt existing buildings on your land, as well as build new facilities. In many respects, it is easier to "start from scratch" so that you can build exactly what you need. It is also worth checking on the costs of modifying a building versus building a new structure before making any decisions. Always get estimates from several building contractors, and include ALL costs (ie. building foundation, installing electric and water lines, building permits, etc.) These unexpected costs can add up to several thousand dollars in addition to the structure cost.

74. AGAINST SANCTUARY KILLING
animal sanctuaries with pigs, goats, sheep, cattle, horses, wildlife and other rescuedanimals may be threatened with the killing of the animals in their care
http://www.veggies.org.uk/ask/
"ASK" Against Sanctuary Killing Latest news - May 15th 2001 Farm Animal Sanctuary Appeal - May 18th 2001 Sanctuaries at Risk Get Involved ... Legal Background Animal Sanctuaries with pigs, goats, sheep, cattle, horses, wildlife and other rescued animals may be threatened with the killing of the animals in their care if neighbouring farmland is found to be contaminated. Despite ministry vets having no automatic legal right to kill without the owners permission, police are reported to have conspired with MAFF to distract a reluctant owner whilst forcing entry to a locked shed to kill the rescued goat in their care. After loosing a court appeal the police, MAFF and the Ghurkas broke into Carolyn Hoffe's home to murder her five pet sheep. Details here. Mossburn Animal Centre in Dumfries recently held off a threat to kill their 14 rescued goats and 3 sheep, forcing an 11-hour u-turn by the Scottish Executive . Details here
Sanctuaries at risk
Other farm animal sanctuaries will be threatened with compulsory slaughter of their healthy rescued animals, in the event of the alledged risk of foot and mouth disease at neighbouring farms. Currently in Devon and Cumbria there is a policy of killing all animals within a two mile radius of suspected cases. For the rest of the country it is half mile radius. If the Devon and Cumbria policy is extended nationally this will result in the slaughter of rescued animals on this, and other sanctuaries. This must be and can be prevented with your support, especially as rescued animals are not intended to be moved, nor put into the food chain.

Lions and tigers and bears, oh no!
Congressman wants to outlaw exotic pets By Norma Bennett Woolf
tive George Miller introduced HR 5226, the Captive Wildlife Protection Act, on July 25 to ban private ownership, transport, or possession of lions, tigers, leopards, cheetahs, jaguars, cougars, or bears bought and sold in interstate commerce. Only those who keep exotics as pets will be affected if the bill passes. HR 5226 exempts federal licensees such as circuses, zoos, research institutions, and aquariums; individuals accredited by The Association of Sanctuaries or the American Sanctuary Association; state universities and agencies; state-licensed wildlife rehabilitators and veterinarians; incorporated humane organizations; federally-licensed breeders and dealers working with circuses, zoos, and other exempted organizations or agencies; and transporters who possess the animal only for delivery to an exempted organization or agency.

DEFRA’s Plans for animal welfare. Later this year, (2002), DEFRA proposes to hold a debate with a view to updating and modernising the existing laws regarding animal welfare in the U.K. http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/2002/020102a.htm This is something that is long overdue. However, if the matter is not dealt with thoroughly, there is a danger that many more animals will suffer than at present. Some of the debate appears to be aimed at rescue sanctuaries rather than the private pet or animal owner. Initially, Ian Causey M.P., had tried to introduce a private members bill into parliament. This bill was drafted by the R.S.P.C.A., and, had it become law, would almost certainly have closed many independent sanctuaries throughout the U.K. Due to lack of time the bill was dropped in January but the government has promised to see this bill become law. In addition, the government intend to strengthen the Animal Health Act and I have it on good authority that the R.S.P.C.A. will be allowed to play a leading role in this. This act will give unlimited powers to the government, whether that is good or bad remains to be seen. Many people today have lost faith in the R.S.P.C.A. who seem too ready to adopt the policy on euthanasia. By their own admission, this organisation is
