T wo seemingly incompatible enthusiasms characterise the North as it faces the millennium: the onslaught of technology and a revival of Traditions and Culture. Historically the Heritage and Culture of Aboriginal people have been woven closely together. On this site we explore our people and their communities, our past, and our present through the use of technology. The people of the North believe that we cannot understand others before we have genuinely listened to them and know of their ways. We must recognise that we will never understand others until we have learned something of their Heritage and Culture. It is in this spirit that we bid you welcome to learn of ours.

"We occasionally had Eskimo visitors - generally male…Hospitality consisted of shaking hands, providing cups of tea with pilot biscuits, or supplying the 'makings' for a cigarette. Conversation was limited, due to their lack of English…Women visitors were rare and then always in pairs, one presumably the chaperone. Invariably they had something to trade, a pair of caribou mitts, some moccasins, or articles made from walrus ivory or bone." - Balfour Currie Map, 'Distribution of the Eskimo.' To meet the need for instructional resources that incorporate the foundational objectives for technological literacy, teachers were invited to submit units in which technological literacy was a focus. Twelve units were selected and the writers were invited to a two and a half day writing workshop, sponsored jointly by the Department of Education and Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation, to polish their units for publication.
Teacher Note:
Throughout the sample units, the following symbols are used to refer to the Common Essential Learnings: C Communication CCT Critical and Creative Thinking IL Independent Learning N Numeracy PSVS Personal and Social Values and Skills TL Technological Literacy
INTRODUCTION
This unit of study was developed for use in a grade four classroom, and combines the following required areas of study: language arts, social studies, drama and dance. This unit can take from four to eight weeks to complete, depending on the interest of the students and the resources available.
The language arts component combines both literary (Aboriginal Legends and Myths) and historical contexts. The context for the social studies component is historical - the story of the Plains Indians and the Woodland Cree before Europeans came to Saskatchewan.

Vibrio cholerae non-O1 on Blood Culture, Saskatchewan
Introduction Vibrio cholerae can be divided into three main sub-types: O1 toxigenic, O1 non-toxigenic, and non-O1 strains . The O1 toxigenic strains, such as the El Tor biotype, have been historically associated with large outbreaks of classic cholera symptoms internationally. They produce an enterotoxin responsible for profuse watery diarrhea . The O1 non-toxigenic strains have been associated with shellfish along the Gulf Coast of the United States . The non-O1 strains generally do not produce the enterotoxin (although some strains do) and are generally only associated with sporadic and rare outbreaks of diarrheal illness . These organisms are increasingly isolated in Canada from residents with no history of travel outside the country V. cholerae non-O1 are found in water sources worldwide . In North America, cases have been primarily associated with consuming raw oysters . Non-O1 may be enteroinvasive (O1 toxigenic V. cholerae

Program Benefits Students and Employers - February 4, 2003
The provincial government launched the third year of the Centennial Student Employment Program (CSEP) today at the Moose Jaw SIAST-Palliser Campus 23rd Annual Career Day. Since its inception, CSEP has helped over 3,000 students find meaningful employment experience throughout 100 Saskatchewan communities. CSEP is a five-year program specifically designed to help Saskatchewan students 16 years and older find employment related to their current field of study or future career ambition. The program provides employers with subsidies of up to 75 per cent of student job costs, to a maximum of $3,500 per job. "This program is designed to create jobs that give young people opportunities to build their careers right here in Saskatchewan," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joanne Crofford said. "By connecting Saskatchewan youth with Saskatchewan employers in meaningful jobs, we are building a stronger provincial community for today and tomorrow." Last year's survey of CSEP participants showed over 95 per cent of students found that the quality of their job experience was satisfactory or better, and 68 per cent of students said the job influenced their field of study or future career ambition. In addition, 98 per cent of employers said that the student's contribution to their organization either met or exceeded their expectations.

    The Benefits of Saskatchewan Lotteries
By Pat Rediger, Communication Consultant, Saskatchewan Lotteries The proceeds from Saskatchewan Lotteries benefit more than 12,000 sport, culture, and recreation organizations in over 800 communities. These organizations provide programs that are far-reaching and encompass people of every age and ability. The'programs range from boy scouts and drama clubs to recreation centers and basketball tournaments. Saskatchewan Lotteries stretches its roots back to 1974, when the provincial government established its legislative and policy framework. Sask Sport Inc., a non-profit federation of provincial sport governing bodies, operates the Saskatchewan Lotteries system at an arms-length basis to government on behalf of the sport, culture, and recreation community. Saskatchewan Lotteries is guided by a volunteer board of directors and a vast network of volunteers. After the sale of lottery tickets, the net proceeds are deposited in the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation. First to be paid are the contractual obligations such as the Federal/Provincial Lottery Agreement Payment, the Participating Non-Profit Community Groups (PNPCG) Payment, the Exhibition Associations Payment, and the License Fee Payment to the Provincial Government's General Revenue Fund. This fund is used to support many vital government programs including education, highways, and health care. After these obligations, the funds are split 50 percent to sport, 35 percent to culture, and 15 percent to recreation.
