Culture Area and Location Government Saud Dynasty Holy Places ... Main Cities As is commonly known, Arabia's culture derives from writings of the Holy Book. The richness of its language is without comparison and it is the fountainhead of Arabia's culture and faith. One direct manifestation of this heritage is the art of calligraphy of all Arabic art forms of this artistic expression. Craftsmanship of a high order is evident in the beautiful workmanship in precious metals. The ancient Arab tradition of hospitality continues unchanged to the present day. Traditions and craftsmanship :
The interlinking spheres of mathematics and astronomy are equally important aspects of the Arabian culture heritage. The word "algebra" is derived from Arabic word "Algebra". Navigation and cartography were direct developments of these numerate skills. Similar attributes of outstanding craftsmanship are shown in the development of intricate workmanship in precious metals and even in household goods. It was in the settled communities such as Jeddah, Makkah that these skills flourished. Both town dwellers and bedouins, however, shared one ancient Arab tradition: That of hospitality. Even today, in the home, or on Saudi flight, drinking Arab coffee. The method of preparation is traditional, each step is an almost ritually observed process.

It was an amazing first round, one of the most amazing openings to a tournament in ages.
A lot of the teams made us forget teams like Holland and Morocco who could not make it to the world cup. The blue (Japanese) and red sea (Korea) of host fans was just an amazing site to watch. In my opinion this world cup will be remembered as the world cup of the fans.
Clearly, the fan’s non-violent influential presence made a difference for many teams.
The first round saw an early exit for many of the so-called power houses of the world. I guess it is proven once again unless you can play on the pitch your past mean nothing in the world cup.
Amazingly Spain managed to do quite well so far, I guess lady luck is finally with them. There was a little bit of every thing drama, exciting goals and lots of cards (especially in the Germany vs Cameroon game) and controversial calls. It was nice to see some crack down on diving and faking. Group of death was definitely very dramatic. As for Saudia they need to regroup, get a nutrition expert in and play 2 friendlies every month to improve their standards. They are a power house in Asia but in order to compete at a higher level they need to play some European opponents on a continuous basis.

Tell us something about the country you are from.

I use to live in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia 1980-1995. Saudia is a beautiful place to live with amazing people, almost zero crime rate, home to various soccer teams. Nice warm environment goes well with the warm hearts of its people. People love to socialize in café with “Irgeela” and traditional food. Amazing peaceful atmosphere in Ramadan, and great sense of respect for other humans, as various charities and donations are made for the poor. Saudis are traditionally very good hosts. “Shawarma” is one of the most commonly found fast food in Saudia. Soccer is played on streets parks and clubs as well. Every year a new star is born in the Saudi League. Some times the best talents are picked up from the local “Hawari legues” (Street leagues) by clubs. Soccer clubs in general have their own youth plans as well.
Roasted salty pumpkin seeds are common with the fans while watching the games. Usually the fans sing traditional songs to motivate the teams. If you happen to watch any derby game between Al- Ahli and Al-Ittihad you will know exactly what I mean about the songs and chanting. There are no abusive comments in the chanting. Absolutely no racism exists in the Saudi League. Mostly Saudi soccer fans are divided into regions.

Arabia has been inhabited for thousands of years by nomadic Semitic tribes. With the birth (A.D. 570) of Muhammad, in Mecca, Arabia was briefly the center of Islam, but by the end of the 7th cent. the area was disunited. Modern Saudi Arabia owes its existence to Ibn Saud, an adherent of the puritanical Wahhabi Muslim sect. Beginning in 1902 he conquered the Nejd, Al Hasa, and Hejaz regions, and in 1932 he proclaimed himself king of a united Saudi Arabia. Oil was discovered in 1936; commercial production began in 1938.
Ibn Saud died in 1953 and was succeeded by his eldest son, Saud. In 1964 Saud was deposed by Faisal, who secured (1974) an agreement giving the Saudis a 60% majority ownership of foreign oil concessions in their country. Under both monarchs, Saudi Arabia aided (1962–67) royalist forces against Egyptian-backed republican rebels in Yemen.
In 1975 Faisal was assassinated; he was replaced by Khalid, who inaugurated a program of industrialization and social welfare. In the conflict with Israel, Saudi Arabia has generally supported the Arab states, although as a friend of the U.S. it is a somewhat moderating force. Its moderating influence has also been felt in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), in which it has acted to stabilize petroleum prices.

Interaction with other cultures of east and west over the centuries enrichedthe ancient traditions and culture of the people of the peninsula.
http://www.saudiembassy.net/profile/arts/arts_intro.html
For thousands of years, the people of the Arabian Peninsula have been at the geographic, commercial and cultural crossroads of the world. As early as 3,000 BC, the people of the western region of the peninsula were part of a far-reaching commercial network extending to south Asia, the Mediterranean and Egypt. The discovery some 1,900 years ago of the cyclical pattern of trade winds known as the monsoon, from the Arabic mawsim meaning season, increased the importance of the peninsula. Trade flourished, with merchants of the peninsula acting as the vital link between India and the Far East on the one side and Byzantium and the Mediterranean states on the other. Interaction with other cultures of east and west over the centuries enriched the ancient traditions and culture of the people of the peninsula.

t The introduction of Islam to the Arabian heartland in the seventh century AD further strengthened the region's cultural heritage. Within a century, Islam spread west to the Atlantic Ocean and as far east as the Indian subcontinent and China. With Makkah as its core, the Islamic world witnessed a flowering of culture, the sciences and the arts unparalleled in human history. Every year for the past fourteen centuries, Muslim pilgrims from around the world have traveled to Islam's holiest sites in Makkah and Madinah, helping further enrich the culture of the people of the peninsula.

In 1985, the first Saudi National Heritage and Culture Festival was held at Jenadriyah near Riyadh. The annual event, organized by the National Guard under the patronage of the King, epitomizes Saudi Arabia's commitment to preserving and exploring its cultural heritage. For two weeks out of the year, the festival provides over a million Saudis with a glimpse into the past. A traditional camel race opens the festival, which encompasses almost every aspect of Saudi Arabia's culture and heritage. Artisans, such as potters, woodworkers and weavers demonstrate their traditional crafts in small shops with typical palm-frond-roofed porches.During the course of the festival, folklore troupes perform the ardha and other national dances, while singers from around the Kingdom perform traditional songs and music.

The culture of saudi arabia is an old culture.. it gets its roots fromthe desert where people are generous and they help each other.
http://www.alfaadel.com/saudi/sa_culture.htm
The culture of saudi arabia is an old culture.. it gets its roots from the desert where people are generous and they help each other. The camel has played an important role as a way of transportation in the desert. It is even called the desert ship. It can travel for three days without drinking and when it drinks it can consume more than 20 Gallons at once. This is why it is a symbol of the life in the desert. AlJunadriah festival is held every year in saudi arabia to remind the young generations of saudi people with the life of their families long time ago. This was the beginning and then this festival covered all aspects of cultural life. It now includes seminars and also lectures about the saudi culture. It also represents the old way of doing a lot of hand made tools.. also, this is done on the level of each part of he kingdom. Also, private and public sectors contribute in the activities of this festival. It also shows a lot of old documents which acts like a mirror in the past to visitors specially from young generations.

o Amnesty Culture of brutality Many traumatized men and women have spoken to Amnesty International over the years about their suffering at the hands of the police. Their testimonies illustrate a culture of brutality, torture and ill-treatment in many police stations, prisons and detention centres across the country. Despite having acceded to the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment in 1997, the Saudi Arabian government allows torture to continue unabated. Torture methods range from techniques involving sticks, electric shocks, cigarette burns, nail-pulling and threats of sexual attack on the detainee or relatives, to beatings. Torture and ill-treatment are used to extract confessions and to enforce discipline. They are also inflicted apparently without reason - simply because it is the culture of the prison. Sometimes, prisoners die as a result. Maitham al-Bahr, a 21-year-old Saudi Arabian, reportedly died in December 1996 in al-Dammam Central Hospital, allegedly as a result of torture. He was a university student from al-Qatif in the Eastern Province. He was reportedly detained during a wave of arrests after the 1996 bombing of the al-Khobar military complex. In November he was transferred from al-Mabahith al-'Amma headquarters in al-Dammam, where he was being detained, to the hospital. A post-mortem examination reportedly revealed that he had various ailments, including renal failure and swelling in several parts of his body, which were allegedly caused by torture.
