Saudi Arabia - Culture of brutality Torture "I told my investigators... 'What crime do you have against me?'... Their answer was nothing else but beating me... They tied my hands behind my back, then they shackled my legs, then tied my hands to my feet. After, they pulled me flat on the ground and then they started beating me. This was their answer." A political prisoner held in Saudi Arabia in 1996 spoke these words. He and many other former prisoners have revealed a culture of police brutality, torture and ill- treatment in many police stations, prisons and detention centres across the country. Beatings with sticks, electric shocks, cigarette burns and nail-pulling are some of the torture methods often described. Saudi Arabia's criminal justice system facilitates torture. Lack of judicial supervision of arrest and detention, denial of prompt access to relatives and a doctor, and no access to lawyers all leave prisoners extremely vulnerable to abuse. Torture is used to extract confessions and to enforce discipline. Sometimes it is inflicted apparently without reason.

Saudi Arabia People ... Arab Names
For those familiar with the European tradition of using just a forename, optional middle name and surname, names in the Arab world can seem perplexing, not least because they can run to enormous length. However, there is a logical structure to the Arab naming convention that, once seen, makes it simple to decipher a person's recent ancestry. SaudiCities

Country Flag ... Travel Warning History Arabia was probably the original home of the Semites. Beginning in the 4th millennium BC, these ancient peoples moved into Mesopotamia and Palestine, where they came to be identified as Assyro-Babylonians, Canaanites, and Amorites. Culture Saudi culture is based on Islam and the perfection of the Arabic language. The Saudi form of Islam is conservative and fundamentalist, based on the 18th-century revivalist movement of the Najdi leader Shaikh Mohammed Ibn Abdel-Wahhab. This still has a great effect on Saudi society, especially on the position of women, who do not generally go out without being totally covered in black robes (abaya) and masks, although there are regional variations of dress. The Najd and other remote areas remain true to Wahhabi tradition, but throughout the country this way of life is being threatened by modernisation and rapid development.

Much of the country consists of vast deserts where few people live and little or nothing grows. But beneath the sand and rock of Saudi Arabia lie some of the largest petroleum deposits in the world. A Short Background In 1902 Abdul al-Aziz Ibn SAUD captured Riyadh and set out on a 30-year campaign to unify the Arabian peninsula. In the 1930s, the discovery of oil transformed the country.

    THE CALENDAR
The Saudi Government operates according to the Hegira calendar, a lunar reckoning from the year of the Hegira (Prophet Muhammad's journey from Mecca to Medina in 622 A.D.). The twelve months of the Hegira calendar have 20 or 30 days totalling 354 days. Because the beginning of each month depends upon the sighting of the moon, it is not unusual for the calendar to be adjusted during the year.

    FAHAD AL RAJHI
There is a difference between arranging a marriage in Saudi Arabia in the United States. In Saudi Arabia the man has to go to the bride's house and this is very formal in Saudi Arabia because we have rules to follow in our religion. According to the tradition in Saudi Arabia, if a man wants to get married, first, he has to go to the bride's father's house. And it'll be the first time for him to see the girl that he is going to marry. A man has to tell his mother, his sister or one of his relatives what kind of woman he would like to marry. For example, he would say that he wants a lady with big eyes, long dark hair, not fat, not thin, but normal body, and someone who follows the rules of the religion. The mother or the sister won't find the woman that he likes quickly; it would take about a month or more. If the mother or the sister found the woman that he described, they would tell him and then they would call the woman's parents and tell them that they want to engage their son to their daughter. So, if the woman's parents don't refuse, they'll set an appointment for the man to come to their house with his parents. At the woman's house, her father would sit with the man and his father and talk. For example, they would talk about the man's job, about his income and about the dowry for the woman.....etc. After a while, the woman would serve the gentlemen tea or soda, and then she would stay for fifteen minutes or less, then leave.

Introduction: Some of the world's most beautiful living coral reefs are located beneath both the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. A paradise for scuba divers and snorkelers, these coastal areas offer endless hours of underwater exploration. Wind surfing, sailing and water skiing are also popular pastimes in the Gulf and Red Sea waters along the Saudi coast. Also, some of the world's best deep-sea fishing can be found in the Red Sea. The Coastal Sports Cities in Jeddah and Al-Khobar and other clubs offer opportunities for a variety of water sports and recreational activities.
By investing in sports facilities, organizing clubs and sports programs and sending its athletes to regional and international competitions, the government of Saudi Arabia seeks to encourage public participation in sports and recreational activities as part of a healthy lifestyle. The participation of hundreds of thousands of Saudis of all ages in cycling races, marathons, soccer tournaments and other sporting events testifies to the success of the government program. Under the Sixth Development Plan (1995-99), more sports facilities and programs will be established throughout the Kingdom. Special emphasis will be placed on the continuing improvement of the quality of sports and physical education offered to Saudi youth.
Traditional crafts are increasingly popular today.
