SCANDINAVIAN LITERATURE
Page 1
Scandinavian literature embraces the literature of Norway, Sweden, Iceland, and their western colonies. In the Middle Ages this literature reached its fullest and best development in Iceland. Almost equal in importance and interest is the Prose Edda, sometimes called the Younger Edda, arranged and in part written by Snorra Sturleson, who lived from 1178 to 1241. The chief portions of it are: 1. "Gylfaginning," in which Odin recounts to Gylf the history of the gods. 2. "Bragaraethur," the conversations of Braga the god of poetry. Other and less important varieties of Scandinavian literature are the romances of history and romances of pure fiction. VOLUSPA The Oracle of the Prophetess Vala. The Voluspa is the first song in the Elder Edda. It is a song of a prophetess and gives an account of the creation of the world, of man, giants, and dwarfs; of the employments of fairies or destinies; of the functions of the gods, their adventures, their quarrels, and the vengeance they take; of the final state of the universe and its dissolution; of the battle of the lower deities and the evil beings; of the renovation of the world; of the happy lot of the good, and the punishment of the wicked. The first passage selected gives the account of creation.

I joined the Scandinavian faculty at UCLA in the 1970s and since that time have been privileged to partake in the blessings and the curses of the humanistic endeavors of teaching, writing, and research. The students of a quarter of a century have been the great gift. My own student years were spent primarily at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where I received my Ph.D. in Scandinavian Literature in 1975. At UCLA I have been responsible for Norwegian, the language of my fathers, as well as literature and culture courses, graduate and undergraduate, in 19th, 20th, and 21st century Scandinavia, and in the craft of writing, the pearl in the oyster of my literary studies. The various strands of my scholarly interestthe 's obsession with beauty and death. With my colleague, Faith Ingwersen, I edited a collection of essays on the turns of the centuries in Scandinavia, honoring our close friend and my Norwegian mentor, Harald Naess. Most recently I have been writing essays on the subject of loss and the intersection of passion, will and melancholy in the female literary subject, including characters as seemingly diverse as Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler and the contemporary Danish writer, Peter Høeg's Smilla. In future I will be pursuing the aesthetics of joy, in one way or another, though initially in Ibsen's "theater."

I fell in love with Sweden and with Swedish when I went to Uppsala and then Stockholm as a graduate student in the 1960s. My trip to Sweden followed a circuituous route from my B.A. at San Francisco State University in English and Creative Writing to France and the Sorbonne for a year to study French, then finally to Sweden. After finishing my M.A. in Comparative Literature with an emphasis on Nordisk litteraturhistoria at the University of Stockholm, I went to UC Berkeley to complete my Ph.D. in Comparative Literature with areas of specialization in Swedish, French and American literature. (Poetry is my first love and when I first started teaching I managed to publish a number of my own poems as well as some translations of Swedish poets.) With the assistance of various scholarships and fellowships, I was able to return on a regular basis to Sweden and Scandinavia and, as the list below suggests, much of my academic research focused on nineteenth-and twentieth-century Swedish authors. My most recent work
