More than 330,000 Connecticut children are transported to and from school in a school bus every day. When school is in session, drivers should be sure to drive with EXTRA caution. The following are safety tips for motorists, parents, and children:

Tips for Parents:

Tips for Children:

Tips for Motorists:
Slow down. Be especially careful when driving on neighborhood streets and around school zones, always expect the unexpected. Be alert for youngsters walking to and from school as you back out of your driveway or leave your parking garage. We want school children to be safe. Watch for them on bicycles, especially at intersections and driveways. Young bicyclists have a tendency to dart out of driveways without looking for traffic. Stop your car when you see lights flashing on a school bus. Red flashing lights indicate that the bus is stopped and students are getting on or off. Don't start driving until the red lights stop flashing. Be aware that a child may dash across the street.
Tips for Parents:
Does your child ride a bicycle to school? Remember: State law requires anyone under the age of sixteen to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle. It's not just the lawit's a good idea for everyone. If your child is one of the more than 330,000 Connecticut children who ride a school bus, remind them of these safety tips:

What You Should Know as a Motorist . . .
You must drive with extra care whenever you see a school bus in front of you or coming towards you. If a school bus flashes its red lights,
TRAFFIC IN BOTH DIRECTIONS MUST STOP.
You should remind your children to be extra careful when getting on and off the school bus. Have them take a second look for traffic before crossing the road. Also remind your children to follow the school bus safety rules taught at school. Encourage them to help the driver keep his or her attention on road safety. They can do this by behaving as quietly as possible and remaining seated until the bus has come to a complete stop.

School Bus Stopping Law
The law applies everywhere regardless of the posted speed limit on highway, city, town or village roads.

The National Safety Council, in a 1996 study, determined school buses to be the safest form of transportation available. The study found the risk of death to a passenger traveling in a school bus to be 172 times less than someone traveling in an automobile. Thomas Built Buses takes great pride in helping achieve the excellent safety record that school buses boast. A full one-third of all students who ride school buses each day ride a Thomas. Thomas was the first to introduce steel-framed buses and the first to engineer steel structural supports well below the school bus floor to strengthen the skirt area. Send an E-Card SCHOOL BUS SAFETY Is there potential for disaster on the school bus? by Janet Heit of 5 Picture this: it's a snowy school day afternoon. You are on the sidewalk waiting for your child's school bus to drop her off. This being New York City, there are cars parked along the curb, so the bus pulls as close to the cars as it reasonably can. As your child steps off the bus, she slips on the icy mess underfoot. The bus door closes before anybody's realized that the long strap dangling from her backpack is tangled in the now-closed door. As you are racing to the door, the bus pulls away, dragging your child with it and running her over. Unfortunately, this is based on a true incident that occurred here in New York City. The fact is, over 90 percent of school bus fatalities occur outside the vehicle. Half of those result in a child being run over or dragged.

Bus-Safety.com
Prior to the development of the Bus Safety Awareness Program, Bus-Safety.com researched the issue of bus safety in the United States to answer the following questions: How many school bus accidents are there each year and what is the nature of those accidents? In the United States over 23 million children ride school buses every day. According to The Transportation Research Board Of The National Research Council, on average school bus-related accidents claim the lives of approximately 40 children each year and as many as 8,500 children are injured. The severity of school bus accidents ranges from minor cuts and bruises, to severe lacerations, paralysis, and fatalities. Each year there are accidents of all types both inside and outside the bus. The majority of fatalities in most years occur in an area ten feet around the bus commonly known as the "danger zone" where the driver cannot see. As we review the details of many of the accidents we concluded that school bus accidents often follow a pattern of predictability in that we see the same type of accidents happening over and over. While accidents and injuries will never be reduced to zero, what is most alarming is the fact that the majority of the most serious accidents are preventable.

Comments: Like in most areas, many preschool facilities and child care centers where I live use vans equipped with special features for transporting preschoolers, toddlers and infants. In many instances, these vans have been decorated or furnished to look like mini school buses. This really helps young children to make an easy transition to the traditional school bus and they feel like they are also going to school like older children. I thought I would share this fun, practical and educational concept.

7 School Bus Safety Tips
Compiled by Karin A. Bilich
Keep your child safe and sound on the big yellow bus. Many children ride the bus to school every day. But how many of them know about its potential dangers? From boarding the bus to crossing the street, it's important that kids take safety precautions. Keep your child safe by teaching him these seven safety tips: 1. Stay away from the street while waiting for the bus. Kids should get in a line that starts about six feet from the curb, perpendicular to the street rather than alongside it. 2. Wait for the bus door to open. Children should not approach the street until the bus driver opens the door and gives the okay for the kids to get on.

Bus Safety Forms OAR's ... Specialty
When parents put their child on the school bus it often invokes mixed feelings. As parents, you can relax and be assured that you are putting your child in the hands of trained professionals who care about your child. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says, "School buses are the safest form of ground transportation."* Nationwide, each year, there are approximately 450,000 school buses transporting nearly 24 million children, more than 4 billion miles. Tragically on an average there are 10 fatalities per year to students on school buses in the United States. Fortunately, in Oregon there has not been a student fatality on a school bus since 1976. This is not by accident. In Oregon, school buses must meet a certain set of specifications. Each driver must meet and maintain driver qualifications, including ongoing training. Parents often ask, "Why aren't there seatbelts on school buses?" By design, not as a financial decision, there are no belt systems on school buses. It should be noted that the only type of belt system that could be installed in a school bus is a lap belt, not the lap/shoulder belt systems that are available in passenger motor vehicles. There are serious questions about the ability of a lap belt to provide crash protection to children in any type of motor vehicle, including school buses. In school buses children are protected by the safety compartment they ride in, this is called "compartmentalization". One of the major benefits of compartmentalization is that it is a passive form of crash protection. Neither the driver nor the student has to assure that the lap belt is placed properly across the student's lower torso. The design also fits a wide variety of weights, heights, ages, and seating positions.
