An Educated Guess. . .
An invitation to tap into the wealth of resources offered by informal science centers
by Hana Rab At a guess, many teachers are unaware of the vast and valuable teaching resources available to them from informal science education institutions around the country. With fun interactive exhibits, libraries, workshops, and World Wide Web sites including online exhibits, study units, and classroom projects these museums should not be overlooked! In a time when many teachers are baffled by how to translate education standards into real classroom activities, these science museums, aquariums, zoos, arboretums, botanical gardens, children's museums, nature centers, natural history museums, planetaria, and science centers can help them deliver exciting and relevant curriculum, instruction, and assessment. In 1996, the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) surveyed 440 of the more than 1,500 informal science education institutions to examine how they were supporting science education reform in schools. It found that three-quarters provide school/teacher support programs. Science centers were most likely to offer school support programs (98 percent), followed by natural history museums (97 percent).
Museums as Resource Centers
Teachers who live near museums often can pick up packets of activities, resources, and programs from museums' information desks or educational resource centers. Calling ahead of time to set up an appointment with an education staff member will get you the inside scoop on that museum's educational services, events, and other offerings. Each of the Smithsonian Institution's museums, for example, provides guides to publications for teachers, information on available institutes, copies of Smithsonian in Your Classroom, and Carousel A Guide for Teachers and Students Visiting the Smithsonian Institution.

This year's theme is "Science and Technology: Serving Our Global Community." "Global Science and Technology Week is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to the universal nature of science and emphasize the importance of math, chemistry, physics, biology and scientific education in today's increasingly global society," said President George W. Bush. Through the Institute's National Leadership Grant program, museums and libraries have developed activities and materials, to help parents, teachers, librarians and curators, raise student interest in math, science and technology. "Museums and libraries across the country are helping to teach math, science and technology in exciting ways. They offer curriculum linked programs for schools, exciting after school activities, innovative digital and interactive resources and more," said Dr. Robert S. Martin, Director of the Institute.

EASI serves as a resource to the education community by providing information and guidance for the integration of technology into the special education classroom. Through the "K-12 Center" link of this site, educators will find a glossary of terms related to adaptive technology and special education, hardware and software products, science and math resources, and ideas for using the computer as a tool towards inclusion and curriculum integration. Also provided is a list of Web sites designed specifically for kids.

4000 Years of Women in Science
(Biographies, bibliographic references, photographs, and links to related sites.)
Access and Merit: A Debate on Encouraging Women in Science and Engineering
(Essay by Canadian professor F. Mary Williams that describes the debate about the wisdom of interventions to encourage more women to prepare for careers in science and engineering. Ultimately, she argues that "by using a narrow definition of what constitutes scientific knowledge, the 'meritocritics' have missed the reality, and the potential, of modern science." Her essay is in pdf format and requires the use of a free Adobe Acrobat reader
Accessibility of Computer Science: A Reflection for Faculty Members
(Computer Science professor Dianne P. O'Leary's insightful discussion of the chilly climate for women in computer science. The discussion is arranged as a series of questions, such as whether women are less talented in computer science, why so few women enter the field and why so many who do enter do not stay, what makes the environment chilly, and what can be done at the faculty level and throughout the curriculum, from beginning courses to graduate education. References are provided for all sections. Highly recommended.)
