(Reprinted with the author's permission) One of the most common pieces of advice given to writers about marketing their work is to research the publisher before submitting. But how do you do that? One of the most valuable resources is the publisher's catalog. Let's take a sample manuscript and a publisher and see if we think the manuscript will meet the publisher's program. Manuscript a picture book biography of Shirley Temple. Target age K-3. Publisher Houghton Mifflin books. The first job is to take a detailed look at the publisher's current catalog, or preferably a couple seasons of catalogs. Write to the publisher and ask for a current catalog. The addresses for publishers can be found in the Literary Marketplace or in market guides such as Children's Writers and Illustrator's Market (CWIM). Often, the

Biographical information can be found in books, encyclopedias (general and subject), journals/magazines, newspapers (obituaries), and specialized biographical sources. This information may be divided into three categories - "current" (people included are still living), "retrospective" (people included are dead), and those sources which include both living and dead persons. In addition, there are "general" biographical sources as well as those for specific subject areas. Encyclopedias Encyclopedias remain a good source of biographic information. Some standard ones are:
  • Encyclpedia Britannica (Ref AE5 E36) Encyclopedia Americana (Ref AE5 E31) World Book Encyclopedia (Ref AE5 W6) Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (Ref H41 E56) International Encyclopedia of the Social Science (Ref H40 A2 I5) Encyclopedia of Education (Ref LB15 E56) Encylopedia of Philosophy (Ref B51 E5) New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (Ref ML100 N48) Women in World History (Ref HQ1115 W6 1999) Encyclopedia of World Art (Ref N31 E52)

Introduction to the Catalogue of the Scientific Community of the 16th and 17th Centuries Richard S. Westfall I n addition to this Introduction, there are sixteen other WordPerfect (WordPerfect 5.1, DOS 3.1) files plus the dBase file (dBase III+) and two small program files designed for a particular manipulation of the dBase file. This Introduction intends briefly to explain what they are. 'Instrcns' contains the Instructions that I wrote out for the graduate assistants who have helped me collect the data in the catalogue. It explains what the catalogue is about, but let me also explain it here. I have taken as the scientific community (as far as this quantitative study is concerned) the scientists included in the Dictionary of Scientific Biography from the decade in which Copernicus was born through those born in the decade of the 1670's (and thus potentially active in science during the 17th century). Using the DSB allows me to have a large population of the most important scientists, selected by scholars expert in the field, but a population that I did not select and cannot then have slanted in any way. I did purge those in the DSB, eliminating twenty-one who do not appear to have been scientists in my definition of the term. The list of those purged, with brief justifications, appear as part of the file 'Thoughts.' On all of the 630 remaining scientists I have collected information under a number of headings. While I have used the DSB to define the group, I have gone far beyond it for the information I am collecting.

in the Western Libraries
There are several ways to go about locating biographical information. For books on individual subjects and collective biographical works, search the Online Catalog using your person's name as a subject, for example: ANGELOU, MAYA - Biography Other sources of biographical information, typically more brief than books, can be located through some basic types of biographical sources: Biographical Indexes Biographical Directories , and Biographical Dictionaries
Biographical Indexes
Biographical indexes are designed to condense the search process by indexing both major and lesser biographical dictionaries and collective biographies. The Biography and Genealogy Master Index or BGMI (Online Resources, Indexes and Databases) is a comprehensive index to more than 10 million biographical sketches in over 1000 current and retrospective biographical dictionaries, covering contemporary and historical figures throughout the world. Search by persons last name followed by first name. Citations give the subject’s name (with each variation) followed by year of birth and/or death. The Biography Index is included in BGMI’s indexed sources of biographical information. A retrospective work

Werner Heisenberg
One cannot fully appreciate the work of Werner Heisenberg unless one examines his contributions in the context of the time in which he lived. Werner Karl Heisenberg was born in Wuerzburg, Germany, on December 5, 1901, and grew up in academic surroundings, in a household devoted to the humanities. His father was a professor at the University of Munich and undoubtedly greatly influenced young Werner, who was a student at the Maximilian Gymnasium.
Heisenberg had the opportunity to work with many of the top physicists in the world including Niels Bohr and Max Born. Like many of the top physicists of the time Heisenberg received his doctorate at an early age. In Heisenberg's case he received it at the young age of twenty three. Heisenberg was not just a researcher. He was also a professor and author. During his career he taught at many prestigious universities, including the Universities of Leipzig, Goettingen, and Berlin. He also wrote many important books including, Physical Principles of the Quantum Theory, Cosmic Radiation, Physics and Philosophy, and Introduction to the Unified Theory of Elementary Particles. In 1932 he won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in Quantum Mechanics.
During the war Heisenberg worked on the German A-bomb project along with a number of other German scientists. It has been proposed in the novel Heisenberg's War, written by Thomas Powers, that Heisenberg deliberately sabotaged this project to keep the bomb out of Hitler's hands. After the war was over, all of the scientists in Germany working on the A-bomb project, including Heisenberg, were interned in England to be questioned about their work on the project.

This section of the Collections Policy Statement on Science and Technology covers the subclass Q (Science, General) and applicable subclasses of Class Z . The Library's collections in this class encompass nearly 44,000 titles. In addition, some of the numerous abstracting and indexing services, catalogs of other scientific libraries, specialized bibliographies, and finding aids for general science are classed in Z, those relating to the role of science in the developments of civilization are classed in CB, and those relating to the telecommunication aspect of information theory are classed in TK5101+ II. Research Strengths
The Library's collections in general science are particularly strong in the history of science, scientific exploration, the lives and contributions of scientists, and the role of science in society. For a discussion on collecting guidelines in the history of science, please consult Chapter A, History of Science and History of Technology Another area of distinction in the Library's general science collections is its holdings of materials summarizing the contributions of scientists to the community of knowledge. This multi-faceted/multi-formatted collection of biographical materials recording the scientific accomplishments, achievements, and the personal and public lives of scientists is vast and covers all periods of science from classical antiquity to modern times. While book-length biographies, autobiographies, and membership directories are usually classed by subject, collected biographies, those appearing in the publications of scientific societies, institutions, and organizations, and biographical memoirs are generally classed in Q. Also classed in Q are the chronologies, milestones and landmarks of science, most of which are directly tied to the triumphs, conquests, and achievements of a single scientist or groups of scientists.

"ROUGH SCIENCE" PUTS THE FUN INTO SERIOUS SCIENCE
"Rough Science" is the thinking person’s reality show. Acclaimed by the British press as "making science fun and accessible," the series takes a group of highly skilled scientists, drops them in a remote island location and presents them with a series of challenges, all designed to test the practical side of their disciplines. Produced by BBC and Open University in association with WETA Washington, D.C., "Rough Science" succeeds in revealing the science in the everyday. The series of 10 half-hour programs will be offered through PBS Plus to nearly 350 stations nationwide beginning October 2. Ingenuity, resourcefulness and teamwork are the hallmarks of "Rough Science." Under the watchful eye of host Kate Humble, British and American scientists tackle each challenge with both time and material constraints — they must complete a specific job in three days, using only the raw materials they find on their island locale. The tasks run the gamut from the practical to the cosmetic, from building a transmitter and receiver to fashioning paper, pen and ink to mapping the scientists’ temporary island home. The boffins approach their tasks with humor and aplomb, leading the British press to call the series "entertaining," "innovative" and "intelligent."
