THE SCLERODERMA (SCL) FOUNDATION OF VICTORIA WHAT IS SCLERODERMA ( SCL ) S c leroderma ( systemic sclerosis ) is a systemic connective tissue disease. One of the hallmarks is thickening or hardening of the skin. This is literally what the word scleroderma means in Greek - ( sclero=hard, derma=skin ). However, the term systemic sclerosis is probably a better name as it tells us more about the condition. The first thing you need to know is what type of scleroderma. Sometimes doctors use the word scleroderma when they are referring to localized lesions of morphea (see below). This isn’t pretty to look at, but it is rarely serious. Other times a child has linear scleroderma with an area of tight skin on an arm or leg. Again, this isn’t pretty, but it isn’t life threatening. Other children have progressive systemic sclerosis or CREST syndrome. These are the more severe forms of scleroderma that may be life-threatening. Before you do anything else make sure you know which form of scleroderma the doctor is talking about. It makes a big difference in what problems you are likely to have, what medicines you should take, and in what the outcome is likely to be. There are rare cases in which one form of scleroderma changes to another. However, this is so exceptionally rare that once you have been told which form of scleroderma your child has by an experienced physician you should not worry about the others.

Although it primarily afflicts women in their child bearing years, the ranks of Scleroderma patients do include both males and children. The two major forms of the disease include limited (CREST) and systemic . The latter has also been referred to as Systemic Sclerosis. Scleroderma is an over-production of collagen, and for this reason, one of the symptoms of Scleroderma is hard skin. Scleroderma taken literally means "hard skin", and this title has probably hurt efforts to publicize this disease. A disease that causes skin to harden doesn't sound nearly as ominous as AIDS, Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis etc. Unfortunately, Scleroderma causes much more than cosmetic problems. In addition to the hardening of the skin, Scleroderma can affect internal organs including the lungs and kidneys, and can cause these organs to fail with potentially fatal consequences.

Quantitative Analysis of Scleroderma What is Scleroderma? Scleroderma is a disease which affects many body systems, but is primarily characterized by thickening and tightening of the skin. More women are affected than men, and the dominant age group is between 20 to 50. The lungs are affected in 70-90% of cases, and develop either fibrosis or changes in the blood vessels which lead to increased pressure in the pulmonary arteries. The fibrosis usually starts with with an increase in lung fiber density near the posterior (back) regions of the lungs. CT imagery frequently shows the initial effects as an amorphous increase in lung density with an appearance like "ground glass". Later stages of fibrosis are characterized by the emergence of a network of coarse lines. These coarse lines eventually develop into regions containing large numbers of small cysts. This end-stage effect is sometimes referred to as "honeycombing" and is non-reversable. The Goal of our Research The goal of our research is to use High Resolution CT (HRCT) imagery to automatically detect and quantify Scleroderma in its early stages. Scleroderma treatments are most effective when applied during these early stages. Automated detection methods can aid doctors in gauging the effectiveness of new treatments over time. We hope to not only quantify regions of Scleroderma lung tissue, but also qualify them as to their type ("ground glass" density, abnormal lines and "honeycombing").
