Overview of Scottish Literature
These materials are taken largely from the instructor's Scottish Literature: An Anthology , Vols. I-III. THE MIDDLE AGES FOLK BALLADS SCOTTISH LITERATURE 1550-1700 THE AUGUSTAN AGE ... MODERN SCOTTISH LITERATURE THE MIDDLE AGES:
Robert Henryson (c.1420-c.1490) is best known today for The Testament of Cresseid, a continuation of sorts of Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde, in which the faithless Cresseid, now a leper, meets the Trojan warrior she abandoned years before, and is not recognized. The story is insightful, subtle and beautifully told. Henryson, a master of the quiet style, is also known for his Aesopian fables, two of which are given here. The major achievement of Gavin Douglas is the Eneados, his free translation of Virgil's Aeneid. His "Prologues" to the various books of Virgil's epic are entirely original and are usually considered his best works. The four prologues included here are examples of the Scottish emphasis upon nature, especially its harsher elements, which is one of their literature's most characteristic features. "King Heart," written in an unusually quiet style, is an allegory, as its name suggests, and one of the best in Scots.

The Bibliography of Scottish Literature in Translation
What has been the world-wide impact of Treasure Island or The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie What poems by Norman MacCaig have been translated into Italian, Polish, Hebrew or Ukrainian? Which European countries have shown a strong interest in the Scottish ballads? BOSLIT is developing as an invaluable tool for teachers and students of Scottish culture and of modern languages; for the study of comparative literature and of cross-cultural "reader reception"; for all those with an intelligent curiosity as to why a particular work was translated into a particular language at a particular time. BOSLIT has a particular appeal to those who feel that Scottish literature cannot be fully appreciated within narrowly Scottish, British or anglophone contexts. BOSLIT is an online bibliography-in-progress of translations of Scottish writing, including not only books but also items published in journals and anthologies. It was founded in 1994 following discussions between a number of bodies and individuals who felt that information about translations of Scottish writing should be more widely disseminated. At a time when Scottish literature is increasingly read and studied throughout the world, and when there is a growing recognition of the part played by translation in creating world literature
