Scottish Literature Home Exhibitions Scottish Literature Hold Hands Among the Atoms: Scottish writing from 1920 onwards In August 2001 Literature Department launched a new exhibition charting developments in Scottish literature from 1920 to the present day. The text was written by Catherine Lockerbie, former literary editor of The Scotsman and now director of The Edinburgh International Book Festival. The exhibition provides a lively and accessible commentary on the development of the renaissance in Scottish literature, beginning with Hugh MacDiarmid and ending Andrew O’Hagan. In between writers such as Naomi Mitchison, Sorley MacLean, Edwin Morgan, William McIlvanney, Agnes Owens, Katheleen Jamie, Aonghas MacNeacail, A L Kennedy, Jackie Kay and Irvine Welsh demonstrate the diversity, originality and energy of writing from Scotland. The exhibition explores the range of languages used in Scottish writing, from the Gaelic of poets such as Sorley MacLean and Iain Crichton Smith to the use of Scots in the work of Tom Leonard and Alan Warner. The growth of crime writing in Scottish literature is illustrated through the work of Ian Rankin and William McIlvanney and ground breaking works such as Alasdair Gray’s Lanark , Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting and James Kelman’s How Late it Was, How Late
