What is sculpture?

The word sculpture originates from the Latin word sculpere Techniques
Carving
Dating from pre-historic times, carving is a process in which the artist subtracts or cuts away from a solid material to reach the desired form. It can be a very painstaking and time consuming method because of the hard and weighty materials, such as marble or other stones, that are often used. However, artists also carve softer substances such as wood and even soap. Modeling
Casting
Casting is a method of obtaining the permanence of a modeled work by making a mold and casting it in a durable material such as bronze. Two methods of casting are used: sand casting and the cire-perdue or "lost wax" process. The lost-wax process is more widely used, however, both have been frequently employed since antiquity. (Further information on lost wax casting will follow.) Construction and Assemblage
Emerging in the twentieth-century, the techniques of assemblage and construction consist of combining and joining various materials to form a three-dimensional object. These methods originated from the technique collage , which was popularized by the Cubists during the early part of the twentieth century.

Thank you for visiting www.borsheimarts.com
Kelly Borsheim was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, in the United States of America in 1964. After moving to central Texas, her art career started off in photography, specifically lab work and later photo restoration. In 1992, she studied line, tone, and then color for a year before going out on her own to draw from life. In late 1994, she began to study sculpture at the Elisabet Ney Sculpture Conservatory (now called the Austin Sculpture Center ). Kelly later enhanced these studies by attending various workshops at the Loveland Academy of Fine Arts in Colorado.
Since her first sale in October 1997 (an oil painting titled Hand Off Knee for $160), Kelly's paintings and bronze and stone sculpture are now in private collections throughout the United States. While her love of the ocean is evident in her marine sculptures , she is best known for communicating ideas in her work with the human figure . Kelly sculpts in clay and wax for casting limited edition bronze sculptures , as well as carving directly in stone (usually marble or alabaster) for one-of-a-kind works of art. Although primarily a sculptor, she believes that drawing is the essence of all of the visual arts and continues to draw from live models and paint nudes from life as well.

Stone carving tools have not changed significantly since the technique of forging steel was developed. The pneumatic hammer was introduced between 1885 and 1890 (powered by huge steam driven air compressors), and has pretty much replaced the wooden mallet and iron hammer. Carbide tipped tools began appearing in the middle of the 20th century. Most limestone carvers still prefer the old hand forged chisels, and keep a wooden mallet close at hand. A Primer on Carving Soapstone by Sandy Cline "Knowing there is an aspect to every piece of art, the soapstone carver has a special relationship with the objects he creates. Sandy believes the stone is alive, and he both respects and admires it. I am compiling a collection of sources and information for sculptors and those who wish to carve stone. Hope you find what your looking for.".
