Information on both the differences and similarities of seals and sea lions.

What are Seals, Sea Lions, and Walruses? They're the fin-footed ones.
The scientific name for the group of animals that includes seals, sea lions, and walruses is Pinnipedia. It's a Latin word meaning "fin-footed" and refers to the modification of limbs to flippers. Pinnipeds have four flippers - one pair in front, and one pair in back. They're mammals.
Pinnipeds share five common characteristics with other mammals. They're warm-blooded (maintain a high and constant body temperature independent of the surroundings), give live birth, nurse their young, breathe air, and have hair. Since they live in the marine environment and they find their food at sea, pinnipeds are called marine mammals . Other marine mammals include whales and sea otters. They're adapted for land and sea.
Although most of their lives are spent in the water, pinnipeds, unlike whales and dolphins, are also dependent on land. Pinnipeds may come ashore periodically to rest and bask in the sun, and at least once each year, during their breeding season, most species congregate on beaches or sea ice to give birth and breed. A pinniped's body is insulated with a thick layer of fat called blubber . Blubber lies just under the skin. Besides reducing the amount of body heat lost to cooler surrounding waters, blubber contributes to a pinniped's streamlined shape and stores energy.

DEPLETED SEALS and SEA LIONS Pinnipeds: Seals and Sea Lions Seals, Sea lions and Walrus are currently placed in a Sub-order, the Pinnipedia , of the Order Carnivora which also includes the bears, dogs, raccoons, weasels (including otters), hyenas, cats, and mongooses. There have many recent studies on the genetic and fossil history of these groups and their place in the scheme of mammalian classification may well change in the near future. Three families of living pinnipeds are recognized, the Phocidae (hair seals or true seals), the Otaridae (fur seals and sea lions) and the Odobenidae (walrus). The term pinnipedia translates from Latin as "fin foot." All of these animals must come ashore to breed, give birth and nurse their young, though some species are at sea for several months at a time while others return to the shore every day. Phocid seals include elephant seals, several species of ice seals (some are found in fresh water lakes) and the harbor seal of temperate coastlines. The monk seals are found in the Mediterranean Sea and Hawaii. Four phocid species inhabit the Antarctic ice pack. All of these seals have a vertical undulating motion when they move on land. The pelvic architecture does not provide a stable anchor point for the rear flippers to engage the ground for propulsion and the rear flippers are directed rearward. The Otarids, fur seals and sea lions, are found in temperate colder waters and are associated in tropical latitudes with cold water upwelling currents. They have external ear flaps. The arm pit or axilla encloses the forelimbs to about the level of the forearm. In all the pinnipeds the hind limb e.g. rear legs are enclosed to the level of the ankle. Sea lions and fur seals can rotate their hind feet forward and therefore use the pelvic architecture in propelling themselves forward with considerable speed.

The California sea lion is a type of seal that lives in cool waters off the rocky coast of western North America. This marine mammal makes a roaring noise (hence its name), barks, and honks. Sea lions are fast swimmers, going up to 25 mph (40 kph) in short bursts. They are also very fast on land, "walking" with all four flippers. These intelligent and social animals congregate in large groups on land (called colonies) and smaller groups in the water (called rafts). Breeding areas are called rookeries. (Classification: Suborder Pinnipedia, Family Otariidae, Subfamily Otariinae, Genus Zalophus, Species californianus) Anatomy : The California sea lion has a thick layer of blubber (fat), short, thick fur that is dark brown to buff-colored, and a dog-like head. Males (called bulls) are darker and bigger than females. Males also have a thick furry mane around the neck. Bulls weigh up to 850 pounds (380 kg) and are up to 8 feet (2.5 m) long. Females weigh up to 250 pounds (115 kg) and are up to 6.5 feet (2 m) long. The whiskers (called vibrissae) help the seal's sense of touch. The nostrils are closed in the resting state. The sea lion has small external ears and a good sense of hearing. It also has keen eyesight but no color vision. Diet : Sea lions are carnivores (meat-eaters); they eat

(Eumetopias jubatus)
Status
Alaska species of special concern
Description
Steller sea lions are the largest of the "eared" seals. They are light brown in color, with darker undersides and flippers. Pups are much darker at birth. Males may reach weights in excess of 1,700 pounds and have enlarged necks and noticeable manes. Females are much smaller, averaging about 570 pounds. Sea lions are at home both on land and at sea. They use their long front flippers for propulsion and their hind flippers for steering under water. On land, sea lions pull their hind flippers up under their body and "rolling walk" on all four flippers. Habitats and Habits
Steller sea lions are highly gregarious on land and use the same sites for breeding, pupping, and resting year after year. The most well known Steller sea lion habitats are rookeries, where adult animals gather to breed and give birth from late May to early July. Steller sea lions are polygymous; dominant males mate with many females. Rookeries and haulouts (where sea lions rest and take refuge throughout the year) are usually located on relatively remote islands where access by predators is limited. Steller sea lions prey primarily upon schooling fishes, such as pollock and herring, as well as invertebrates, such as squid and octopus. They can be found throughout the North Pacific Ocean from the Kuril Islands and Okhotsk Sea, through the Aleutian Islands and Bering Sea, and south along the North American coast to central California. About 70 percent of the worldwide Steller sea lion population resides in Alaska.

California Sea Lion
Zalophus califonianus Description - Typical colouring ranges from tan to chocolate brown and may appear black when wet. The head has a pointed muzzle and the profile resembles that of a dog. The hair is short; the flippers are long and leathery with nails. An adult male is larger weighing about 800 pounds with a sagittal crest or bump on the top of the head; the female who is considerably smaller, averages 250 pounds. Distribution - The California Sea Lion occurs from Baja California to Alaska. Biology - This playful, noisy, exuberant, quick learner is the "trained seal" of the circus. It is highly adaptable to any surrounding and use a variety of habitats. When resting on rocks or beaches they point their noses skyward and may be seen laying atop one another. When at sea they raft together, playing and leaping clear of the surface. Their long fore flippers enable them to make powerful strokes while swimming and they may reach speeds of 25 mph. They are very vocal and bark like dogs; the pups have a bleatlike call. The California Sea Lion prey on schooling fish, rockfish, squid, flatfish, hake, lamprey, dogfish and salmon. This healthy population continues to flourish despite ongoing conflicts with commercial and sport fisheries.

TRIBES DEFEND SEA LIONS FROM TRAWLERS
BY George Owletuck
Eighty per cent declines in endangered Stellar Sea Lions, due to billion dollar bottom fishing, has 176 Alaskan Native tribes demanding remedies from reluctant federal regulators as pollock trawling opens January one.
Aggressive action to save endangered sea lions and halt their population decline must be taken by National Marine Fisheries Service said the Alaska Inter-Tribal Council which recommends the following.
  • Prohibit trawling in all critical habitat surrounding sea lion rookeries and haul-outs. Reduce pollock catches, atka mackeral, and other fish essential for sea lions' survival in at sea foraging areas. Spread catch quotas over the entire year. Spread catch quotas over broader areas in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska.

Between '88 and '98 sea lion populations dropped from 200,000 to 35,000. Decline began in the early '70's with massive pollock trawling, said the Alaska Inter-Tribal Council.
"In Gulf of Alaska and Aleutian Chain waters marine animals deceased as high volume trawling increased. Sea lions, harbor seals, sea birds, and salmon feed on the same fish caught by ground-fish trawlers," said the Inter- Tribal Council.

CALIFORNIA SEA LION
(Zalophus californianus californianus)
Sea lions are marine mammals that have long torpedo shaped bodies covered in short coarse hair. They are often confused with true seals, but there are many distinguishing characteristics that can dispel confusion between these two animals. The Sea Lion's flippers are much larger than those of the seal, and their hind flippers have the added adaptation of being able to turn forward so that they can be used to aid movement on land. The Californian Sea Lion has a range from the North American Pacific coast: South of Vancouver down to Baja California and the Galapagos Islands. They living on Islands, but they also live on isolated stretches of rocky beach on the mainland. Males are much larger than the females and can reach a length of over 8 feet and weigh 650lbs. Although much smaller in comparison, the females can reach a length of 6.5 feet and weight of 220 pounds. The males are probably the most vocal of all mammals, and let out a loud incessant honking bark to protect over their territories. They are faithful to their territories, and to their harems of up to 15 females. Sea Lions swim up to 25mph which makes them the fastest aquatic carnivore. At night they hunt squid, octopus, abalone, and fish, and when necessary can dive to a depth of 450 feet a remain there for 20 minutes.

Overview

The listing of the Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act in 1990 created new challenges for fisheries managers in the National Marine Fisheries Service and the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council. Managers must balance between two sometimes conflicting objectives: protecting and aiding the recovery of the Steller sea lion under the Endangered Species Act while at the same time providing for sustainable and economically viable fisheries under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. Australian Fur Seal
    Introduction
Seals, sea-lions and walruses belong to the order Pinnipedia. There are 33 species of pinnipeds, divided into three families. The family Otariidae contains 14 species, including the fur seals and sea-lions. Otariid species are typically more upright when on land, and can move with reasonable agility. The family Phocidae is made up of the 'true seals' and contains 18 species. Unable to 'walk' on land like the otariids, they move in a lunging caterpillar-like motion. The third family, Odobenidae, contains only the walrus.
    Seals in Australian Waters
There are ten pinniped species regularly recorded in Australian waters. Fur Seals on Montague Island Family Common name Scientific name Otariidae Australian sea-lion Neophoca cinerea New Zealand fur-seal Arctocephalus forsteri Australian fur-seal Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus Arctic fur-seal Arctocephalus gazella Sub-Antarctic fur-seal Arctocephalus tropicalis Phocidae Southern elephant seal Mirounga leonina Leopard seal Hydrurga leptonyx Crab-eater seal Lobodon carcinophagus Weddell seal Leptonychotes weddellii Ross seal Ommatophoca rossii The Australian sea-lion, New Zealand fur seal and Australian fur-seal breed on the coast of the Australian mainland (including Tasmania) and its nearshore islands. The remaining species breed on Antarctic pack-ice or Sub-Antarctic Australian territories, and occasionally haul out on Tasmanian mainland beaches or reefs.

    Hear about Stellers
(Real Audio 3.0) Family and species The variety of sea lions which live at Sea Lion Caves is commonly called the Northern, or Steller, sea lion. This sea lion is named after George Wilhelm Steller, an eminent German naturalist who accompanied the Russian explorer Vitus Bering in 1741 on his second Alaskan expedition. Steller was the first qualified observer to study and classify these animals.
The Steller sea lion is a member of the Otariidae family, or eared seal. It is characterized by an external ear which can be closed when entering water and by hind feet or flippers that point forward. In contrast, Phocidae, or true seal, has no external ears and it's rear flippers point backward. Also belonging to the Otariidae family is the California sea lion and the Alaska fur seal.
The Alaska fur seal (Callorhinus alascanus), is not found at Sea Lion Caves. The California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) is seen all along the Pacific Coast and is generally found at Sea Lion Caves from late fall to early spring. It readily adapts to captivity and is trained for circus acts.
Physical Characteristics Sea Lions are mammals, or warm blooded animals which give birth, nurse their offspring, and must breathe air. Sea Lions are also pinnipeds literally, feather-footed meaning they have finlike members for propulsion. Their pelvic bone structure allows independent use of their flippers, and therefore, they can walk on their four weblike flippers which contain the same bony structure as the legs of land animals. In the water, the Steller sea lion swims by using a breast stroke and may reach a top speed of about 17 m.p.h. In contrast, other marine animals, such as the whale, depend on fishlike body action to move through the water. The true fur seal folds its front flippers and swims by the force of its trailing rear flippers.
