http://www.craftsreport.com/october02/feature.html
In another day and age, there was far less value in proclaiming oneself a Native American or American Indian, reflecting the low regard with which European settlers had toward the peoples of the New World whose lands they coveted (and forcibly took). Today, as billions of dollars are spent annually on American Indian crafts and a number of tribes have entered the lucrative gaming industry, more and more people are claiming Native American ancestry.
A pot by Caroline Carpio, a Native American craftsperson from Peralta, N.M. Bulk of Native American sales in southwest United States Buyers may also find work sold through the online auction company e-Bay, as well as on Native American and other Web sites. The strength of this market has led to instances of fraud, such as mass-produced items, sometimes imported from overseas and sold as American Indian-made. Individual artists also proclaim themselves Native American but cannot produce any proof of that assertion. To be an enrolled member of the Seminoles, one must have no less than 25 percent Seminole bloodline.

    Introduction
A mericans love to gamble. In 1995, almost 100 million Americans legally wagered $400 billion and lost $39 billion to the house. "...Americans spent more on legal games of chance than on films, books, amusement attractions and recorded music combined." (from source dated February 1994) Most of this action took place in major, well-known casinos in Nevada and New Jersey, meaning private, individual pockets (like Donald Trump’s or Steven Wynn’s of Mirage Resorts) were filled. Interestingly though, Native American Indians are becoming involved with the glamour and glitz of casinos. Indian reservations across the United States are opening their own casinos.
"E conomic and social problems on Indian reservations in the United States and in other countries are well documented." Government entities, private research firms, and Indian groups have detailed reports concerning poverty, alcohol and drug abuse, juvenile delinquency, high crime rates, poor educational facilities, and many other problems. Tribal governments push for change and greater Indian self-determination to deal with their people's problems.

The Seminole Tribe of Florida
A very long time ago, people from the European continent began coming to this country. They came for a variety of reason, freedom for what they believed in, a chance to get rich, and some had a curious desire to just see what's there. Today's site isn't about those bands of traveler. No, it is about some of the people who met the boat. The Native Americans we will be looking at are the Seminole Tribe, and live in Florida. They have lived there for approx. 12,000 years. After the United States government won the war against the Seminole Indians, and took over their lands, they lived for many years in the swamps of south Florida. But that has all changed, as this site shows. They are now a prosperous nation of people who, from the looks of this site, place a strong emphasis on the American work ethic of you can get what you want if you work at it long enough. Here one can visit and become acquainted with the history, culture, and government. Did you know that they have sold "Sweetgrass" baskets for over 60 years? There are two Seminole languages spoken today, yet neither one is traditionally written.

A Gathering of Cultures Every year across the nation Native Americans gather for powwows which are celebrations of their traditions and heritage. Powwows are a time to renew old friendships and create new ones. Modern clothes and ways are put aside for sharing the historic traditions of each culture. In traditional dress participants parade, dance, sing, and share stories of the past. Tradtional values such as generosity and honesty are kept alive and passed on to new generations. The powwow links the past to the present and is a time of renewal. The Task Members of many tribes will be attending a special powwow. CensusDiggins.com Native American Ancestry Native American Ancestry Just about every family has a story about a ggggrandma or gggrandpa who was a full blooded Choctaw, Cherokee, Apache or some other tribe of American Indian. Is there any truth in it? In many cases, yes. In some, it is a romantic tale. I have found that tracing this heritage is most difficult at best. It is a terrible shame, that so many of our Native American ancestors had to hide their heritage to survive. After the trail of tears, they had much to lose by admitting the truth of their forebears..... so for many, the stories and heritage was taboo, never to be spoken of. In this fashion, the records became scarce and thus, that much more difficult for genealogists to follow the footsteps of these proud peoples. I have attempted to round up some links to sites and articles on the subject to help those of you who are searching for your Native American ancestry and heritage.
