HISTORY OF THE SEMINOLE TRIBE OF FLORIDA
    Contact: Stacey Bomser/Janet Maizner
In the 1700s Native Americans from across Georgia and Alabama began to move South into Florida, which at that time was Spanish territory. These people were collectively called "Creeks" by the European settlers. After the Creek War in 1814, more Creeks settled in Florida. By 1820, about 5,000 Native Americans lived in Florida. These Indians came to be known as Seminoles, which meant "runaway." They were called this because they had left their homes in the Southeast to live on their own. By the early 1800s, many slaves were leaving southern plantations for freedom in Spanish Florida. They lived in their own villages, often next to the Seminoles, and farmed their own land. In exchange for a portion of their harvest, the Seminoles protected the former slaves from recapture. When the Seminole Wars broke out, these so-called "Black Seminoles" were some of the fiercest fighters because for them capture meant a return to slavery. The First Seminole War (1817-1818) began in 1817 when American General (and later President) Andrew Jackson was sent with his army to Florida to fight the Seminoles and seize the territory from Spain. As a result of this war, Spain ceded Florida to the United States and the Seminoles were forced to move further south in the state.

about America's past. "I cannot think that we are useless or God would not have created us.
There is one God looking down on us all. We are all the children of one God. The sun, the darkness, the winds are all listening to what we have to say." Geronimo As an Indian sat in his little bark canoe,
He sailed it right over the waters so blue.
He sang of the days when the land was their own,
Long before the pale faces among them were known. At first when the red men were lords of this soil,
We lived happy, contented, without trouble or toil.
We hunted the beaver, the otter, the deer,
For we knew in the wild woods there was nothing to fear. At first when these white men they came to our land, We used them like brothers, we gave them our hand. We knew they were weary, in need of repose, Never thinking these white men would e'er turn our foe. For a while we lived happy with our white friends all round, We showed them the best of our own hunting ground. They paid us with trinkets which pleased us for a while

The Southeast Region is committed to working with federally recognized Native American Tribes in the conservation and management of fish and wildlife resources. The Native American Liaison provides communication and support to Native American Tribes and organizations to promote cooperative fish and wildlife activities. Special emphasis is placed on facilitating the provision of technical assistance to tribes and the establishment of cooperative, partnership activities and projects. For example, the Region has developed a strong, ongoing partnership with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians that involves providing trout eggs and fingerlings to the Tribal Fish Hatchery to support a recreational trout fishery, conducting an annual fish health inspection, and conducting analyses and providing recommendations to improve hatchery operations. The federally recognized Native American Tribes in the Southeast Region are:
