Issues in African History
Professor James Giblin, Department of History, The University of Iowa Like the art of all peoples, the art of Africans expresses values, attitudes, and thought which are the products of their past experience. For that reason, the study of their art provides a way of learning about their history. Through the study of African art we can study the questions which have long preoccupied historians of Africa. This essay written by a historian who studies the African past presents an introduction to these questions. Its purpose is to encourage students to use their knowledge of African art to think about issues in African history. As students of African art begin to consider the African past, they must also consider how Western conceptions of "race" and "racial" difference have influenced our notions of the African past. These ideas, which have usually contrasted the presumed inferiority of black peoples with the superiority of whites, arose in Western societies as Europeans sought to justify their enslavement of Africans and the subsequent colonization of Africa. Historians now recognize that ideas of racial inferiority have inspired the belief that in the past African peoples lived in a state of primitive barbarism. At the same time, they have realized that many of the European writings which they use to reconstruct the African past such as accounts by nineteenth-century missionaries and travelers, for example are themselves tainted by these same notions of African inferiority.

Clinton greeted with dancing, cheering in Senegal
Clinton thanks Senegal President Abdou Diouf for his support for international peacekeeping operations
Cabinet members will travel to Africa for more talks
April 1, 1998 Web posted at: 12:04 p.m. EST (1704 GMT) DAKAR, Senegal (CNN) After being greeted by thousands of people cheering and dancing in the street Wednesday, President Clinton met with Senegalese President Abdou Diouf , praising the West African nation for its leadership in regional peacekeeping. Diouf, who has been Senegal's leader since 1981, greeted Clinton at the presidential palace, set behind tall iron gates overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, as a red-coated military band played on. Abdoulaye Wade, Senegal's main opposition politician, added some political spice to Clinton's two-day visit by saying he would boycott a reception thrown by Diouf to avoid giving a false impression of national unity. Clinton is greeted by thousands of people cheering and dancing in the streets "Diouf wants everyone to see photos of the two of us smiling with Clinton to give the impression all is well in Senegal. I will not attend the reception," said Wade, leader of Senagal's Democratic Party (PDS), who recently quit Diouf's government.

Sierra Leone: History
Since 1991, civil war between the government and the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of more than 2 million people (well over one-third of the population) many of whom are now refugees in neighboring countries. A peace agreement, signed on 7 July 1999, offers hope that the country will be able to rebuild its devastated economy and infrastructure, but previous peace efforts have failed. As of late 1999, up to 6,000 UN peacekeepers were in the process of deploying to bolster the peace accord.

South America's Southern Cone is undergoing profound changes. The new political framework in Brazil, the economic challenges faced by all countries in this region, the debate over new economic development models, and the development of unique social movements are some of the components that make this region especially fascinating at this point in history. SIT's Southern Cone program introduces students to these profound changes and the new challenges faced by the region. Students from a variety of backgrounds benefit from this program's interdisciplinary look at the social, cultural, political, historical, and economic aspects of regional integration and social change.
