BOOKS IN SERBIAN LANGUAGE HISTORY LIVES OF SAINTS SPIRITUALITY History THE SERBS: HISTORY, MYTH, AND THE DESTRUCTION OF YUGOSLAVIA (Second Edition), Timothy Judah Who are the Serbs? Branded by some as Europe's new Nazis, they are seen by others - and by themselves - as the innocent victims of nationalist aggression and of an implacably hostile world media. In this challenging new book, Timothy Judah, who covered the war years in former Yugoslavia for the London Times and the Economist, argues that neither is true. Exploring the Serbian nation from the great epics of its past to the battlefields of Bosnia and the back streets of Kosovo, he sets the fate of the Serbs within the story of their past. This first-in-depth account of like behind Serbian lines is not an apologia, but a scrupulous explanation of how the people of a modernizing European state could become among the most reviled of the century. Rejecting the stereotypical image of a bloodthirsty nation, Judah makes the Serbs comprehensible by placing them within the context of their history and their hopes. 378pp $16.00 Cloth (Yale University Press)

Objective
We want the project to be dealt with from a Yugoslavian perspective and want to encourage scholars in Southeastern Europe to get involved into Jewish studies. The MZS also wants to establish communication between Southeastern European and Western scholars and academic institutions. It thus plans international conferences and will make sure that the projects scientific outcome will be published for the Western and Southeastern academic community alike. The MZS is also establishing a network of institutions and scholars, who work in the field of Minorities in Southeastern Europe, in order to open an international perspective for contacts and cooperation for the colleagues involved in this project.
The design of the project is open to further research. We would like to encourage new projects or ideas from any place or any source to join into our group. The perspective could be broadend for example by a perspective across the boarders (those are not defining the project anyway). Cooperation, association or just the input of ideas are very welcome.

Porthill Publishers The portrait tradition of Anastas Jovanovic was continued by Milan Jovanovic (1863-1944), the brother of painter Paja Jovanovic. He obtained his education in photography in Vienna and Paris. He achieved an aesthetically high photo-visual quality in his portraits. He did portraits of famous Serbian authors, actors and writers from the end of the last century and the beginning of this century (Milos Cvetic, Pera Dobrinovic, Ilija Stanojevic, Milorad Gavrilovic, Ljuba Nenadovic, Milovan Glisic, and others). Rista Marjanovic, a professional newspaper photographer, studied journalism in Paris. His war photographs were published during the war in foreign newspapers and were presented together with the allies' photographs at exhibitions in the Louvre, Paris, in 1917, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, as well as in many cities all over America in 1917. Between the two world wars, both amateur and professional activity took on a new elan, which was made possible by the development of photographic technique, since it considerably simplified the procedure of taking photographs. Innovations in photography still did not require large financial resources, therefore a group of amateur photographers, Surrealists by artistic choice, revealed their talent not only in the field of verbal art, but in the field of photography as well. The most distinguished name was Nikola Vuco, who added wealth to surrealistic photography with his innovations. They were in accordance with the theory of Surrealism, and were based on the application of purely photographic medium. It enriched the history of photography with evidence that photography has a specific visual expressiveness and technique, which became completely independent from painting.

War in the Former Yugoslavia: 1991-99
General Purpose
The purpose of this pathfinder is to serve as a starting point for research on the wars that has taken place this decade in the former Yugoslavia, in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and now Kosovo. It is designed for high school and college-level students, as well as the general public. This pathfinder contains links to a variety of Web resources, as well as suggestions for finding print sources and a brief bibliography. Please be aware that while the following list of sources offers a variety of perspectives, it is by no means a comprehensive collection of what is available on this subject.
Introduction
The former Yugoslavia was located in the region of Southeastern Europe known as the Balkans. It consisted of 6 individual republics: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. After a steady rise in nationalist tensions during the 1980s, Yugoslavia fell apart at the beginning of this decade. Bloody ethnic conflicts took place in Croatia from 1991-95, Bosnia from 1992-95, and now Kosovo. Today, Serbia and Montenegro form the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, in which Serbia is the dominant force, while the other 4 republics are independent states. Kosovo, the region where the current conflict is taking place, is a province within Serbia. The population of Kosovo, however, is comprised mostly of ethnic Albanians who are unhappy under Serbian rule. Both Serbs and Albanians have longstanding historical claims to Kosovo.

www.friendsofbosnia.org History of the war in Bosnia Written May, 1996 Historical Background The former Yugoslavia consisted of six republics and two autonomous regions. Today Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, and Macedonia are independent nations. Serbia and Montenegro comprise the rump Yugoslavia. Bosnia-Herzegovina (prewar population 4.4 million): Bosnia has the most complex mix of religious traditions among the former Yugoslav republics: 44% Bosniaks (Muslims), 31% Bosnian Serb (Eastern Orthodox), and 17% Bosnian Croat (Roman Catholics). Bosnias Muslims are Slavs who converted to Islam in the 14th and 15th centuries after the Ottoman Empire conquered the region. From World War I until the end of the Cold War, Bosnia was part of the newly created country of Yugoslavia. Bosnia declared independence in March 1992. Serbia (including Kosovo and Vojvodina) (prewar population 9,800,000): This republic is the largest and most populous. 66% are ethnic Serb of traditionally Eastern Orthodox religion. Until 1989, Serbia also had two œautonomous regions,” Kosovo and Vojvodina. Kosovo, bordering Albania, was the historic seat of a traditional Serbian kingdom and the site of the famous Battle of Kosovo in 1389, when the Serbs were conquered by Ottoman forces. Today Kosovos population is 90% ethnic Albanian, most of them Muslims. The Albanians are a pre-Slavic ethnic group speaking a distinct language unrelated to the various forms of Serbo-Croatian spoken throughout the former Yugoslavia.

For those a bit impatient we suggest you read the following:
Why is Kosovo so important for Serbs?
Kosovo is a part of Serbia for more than 800 years. For Serbs Kosovo represents very important part of their spiritual inheritance, part of the country where most of the Serbian churches and monasteries are located. The full name of Kosovo province is Kosovo and Metohija .The origin of this name is from the word Metoh which means 'church land'.
In 1389. important battle took place in Kosovo field when most of Serbian nobility died trying to defend Serbia from the numerous Turkey enemy.Though there was no winner Serbia couldn't recover from the grat human loss and soon Turkey took control of the Serbian country.

http://www.unc.edu/~tigerman/histserbia.htm
The History Of the Republic of Serbia The ethnic group currently identified as Serbians first moved into the Balkan regions during the 6th and 7th centuries B.C.E. and soon converted to Christianity. During the middle ages, Serbs shared armed conflict with other peoples in the region including Greeks in the south, Bulgarians to the west, and Magyars to the east. In the 9th century, Rascia established the first state historians recognize as Serbian. Within this state, the Serbs were more or less autonomous, but recognized Byzantine suzerainty. The first Serbian zhupan to be recognized by the Byzantines was Stephen Nemanja who established his dynasty in 1159. Most consider the golden age of Serbia to be during the mid-14th century when Stephen Duan assumed the throne which led to increased land holdings, economic prosperity, and cultural stability.
The Serbian throne then returned to the Karadjordje dynasty who put forth Peter I who during his political career had reformed and liberalized the constitution and strengthened the economy. He helped form the Balkan League (Montenegro, Bulgaria, Greece, and Serbia) which established freeing slavs, specifically those Bosnia and Hercegovinia, from Turkish and Austro-Hunagarian rule as its goal. He led Serbia and the rest of the Balkan League into the first Balkan War against Turkey in 1912. Problems arose when the allies went to the business of dividing up conquered lands. This led to the Second Balkan War between Bulgaria and Serbia of which Serbia emerged the victor and a powerful force of Eastern Europe.

History of Serbian Conflict
by Carl Pearlston Much has recently been written about the Battle of Kosovo in 1389, in an attempt to explain the depth of Serbian attachment to that province. Most people are, by now, no doubt familiar with the basic fact that the Ottoman Empire defeated a Serb-lead European army on the plain of Kosovo, which had the effect of transforming the area into Serb hallowed land. But there is a great deal more of Balkan history whlich is not so well known, and should be if we are to understand the problems we face there. In 1830, Serbia was granted interior autonomy by the Ottomans, and by 1867, Turkish garrisons were withdrawn.. Serbia fought on the side of Russia in the Russo-Turkish war in 1877, won its independence, and was proclaimed the kingdom of Serbia in 1882. At the same time, Albanians in southern Kosovo formed a provisional government to resist Ottoman rule. Serbia was, however, dissatisfied with the peace agreement, since it left Bulgaria with land claimed by Serbia. Further, Serbia was land-locked and had no outlet to the Adriatic Sea. In June 1913, Greece and Serbia concluded an alliance against Bulgaria which precipitated a war by the combined forces of Greece, Serbia, Montenegro, Romania, and the Turks against Bulgaria, who promptly sued for peace. Bulgaria gave up a large area of territory to Romania and another to the Turks. Serbia and Greece divided most of Macedonia between them, and Serbia got its sea outlet through Montenegro..
