The Shakers Shaker Dance at New Lebanon, NY - mid-nineteenth century The Shakers - Another America, by Karl Mang Originally published in: The Shakers Life and production of a community in the pioneering days of America - a catalog for an exhibition at the Staatliches Museum fur angewandte Kunst, Munich, 1974. On September 5th, 1774, shortly after "Mother" Ann Lee and her eight companions had landed in America, the Continental Congress convened, to which twelve of the thirteen colonies had sent delegates. A "Declaration of Rights and Grievances" addressed to the king and parliament of the mother country constituted the first step towards independence. In 1783 Ann Lee died in Watervliet (formerly Niskeyuna); the same year saw the signature of the peace treaty with the thirteen colonies. With this, the king of England recognized these thirteen "United States" as "free, independent and sovereign". In the eight years which lay in between, the Shakers (coming from New York as settlers) had cleared land in the wilderness in the neighborhood of Albany and founded their first settlement in Niskeyuna. During a two-year preaching tour of New England, Ann Lee had won the first American followers of her faith. At the same time the Americans gained their independence. At the time when the Shakers were inspired to emigrate to that country, England, after the events of the 18th century, could indeed no longer be compared with the autocratic states of continental Europe. Yet Ann Lee still had to suffer imprisonment, oppression and distress, for the freedom to preach and make converts was limited.

The group's leader was Ann Lee. Origin of the Shakers The founder of the Shakers, Ann Lee, was a blacksmith's daughter and a mill hand in Manchester, England. Looking for a more personal and emotional religion than the official Church of England, in 1758 she joined a group called the Wardley Society that had left the Quakers. Because the Wardley's version of religious worship including shakings of the body and motions of the head and arms, they came to be called "Shaking Quakers" and this in time was shortened to Shakers. The group's official name, which they used after emigrating to America, was the "United Society of Believer's in the Second Coming of Christ." In their earlier years they usually referred to themselves as "Believers." Ann Lee was not very active in the group until she experienced several unhappy events her father arranged a marriage for her with another blacksmith, Abraham Standley, and her four children all died either at birth or in early infancy. She also began to have visions; these, and her innate leadership ability and charisma, led to her becoming leader of the group. However, their untraditional mode of worship also brought the group much persecution. Finally one of Ann Lee's visions directed her to take her followers to America.
