Medical American Sign Language Phrasebook American Sign Language is the most common language of Deaf Americans and Canadians. It is their native language, not merely a substitute for English words. In fact, many Deaf people are not fluent in written English and cannot simply write notes to communicate. Encounters with medical professionals require excellent communication, and Deaf patients may need to have a highly qualified professional interpreter present and in the US, they have a legal right to this at the medical provider's expense, if necessary to communicate effectively in the situation involved. On the other hand, there are many minor encounters where hearing and Deaf people will need to communicate. Scheduling an interpreter to be present for these would be impractical. Sign Language in Down Syndrome Donna wonders: I have been thinking about using sign language while talking to Ian Jack. I was wondering if this would be a problem with him learning to speak later. What are the opinions of those parents that use signing with their children? Does it interfere with speech later? The best way is to start with a child very early and address the oral-motor development, breathing issues, hearing, processing skills and nutrition, so that the child has the fundamentals for speech. ~Kay Ness Ginger answers: I can only tell you our experience. We were persuaded by a speech therapist to start using some signing with Carmen. She will use signs for words she knows and is capable of saying. It is most definitely a crutch, and I have seen her stop saying words once she had a sign. Now, when she pulls this with me, I hold her hands down and she says the words. Think long and hard before you start signing. This advice flies in the face of the advice you will get from any speech therapist!! Shari writes: I did not want my son to learn sign language. I thought he would rely on it instead of learning to talk. Our speech therapist convinced us this would not be the case, however, and we started learning a few signs. It worked wonderfully with Tristan. It enabled his speech. He was much less frustrated. If he couldn't grasp the word he wanted, he could use the sign, and viola, the word would pop out. He's nine now and hasn't used signs in a long time. Every now and then, though, we'll "play" with them.

A Basic Dictionary of ASL Terms Here are a few American Sign Language terms to help those of you who are trying to communicate with a person who signs, but does not hear. New word definitions are being added, and this will soon bring the total number of ASL terms to more than 1270! Also included is the basic alphabet and numbers 1-10 This dictionary has both animated and text definitions. The text definitions also have letter or number sign images to aid in visualizing the sign. This will allow you to quickly locate a word, read how to sign the word, and choose to view the animated sign if you wish. The sign images are displayed from the perspective of the viewer, not the signer. It is easy to remember this if you imagine that someone is signing to you while you are viewing the word definitions. In Sign Language, facial expression including the raising or lowering of the eyebrows while signing, and body language are integral parts of communicating. These actions help give meaning to what is being signed, much like vocal tones and inflections give meaning to spoken words. Primate Language Curiosity regarding apes' capacity for language has a long history. From DARWIN 's nineteenth century postulations of both biological and psychological continuities between animals and humans, to the more recent discovery (Sibley and Ahlquist 1987) that chimpanzee (Pan) DNA is more similar to human than to gorilla (Gorilla) DNA, scientific findings have encouraged research into the language potential of apes. A recent report (Gannon et al. 1998) that the chimpanzee planum temporale is enlarged in the left hemisphere, with a humanlike pattern of Wernicke's brain language-area homolog, will provide additional impetus. That area is held basic to human language. Does, in fact, elaboration in the chimpanzee's planum temporale provide for language-relevant processes or potential? Is its elaboration an instance of homoplasy (convergent evolution)? Or is its function not necessarily related to language?
