See also: the TECFAMoo Project Page and our short technical MOO page April 98 News: Since I will teach my VE course in May, I started cleaning up this mess. The ratio of broken links is somewhat more acceptable. If I have time I will reorganize the whole thing and add more contents. September 2000 News: Added a few links, but NO cleanup (still don't have time). Jan 2002: Still the same situation :) I really do have trouble with some people who think it's kewl to move around files in their server. Please consider that most academic indexes only get updated once every 1-3 years or never at all. The teacher records a message each day. The message includes a brief synopsis of the current day's classroom activities, homework for the evening, how parents might be able to help students, and specifics about upcoming due dates, projects, or field trips. What is a Newsgroup?
Newsgroups are discussion groups where people can get answers to their questions from people with similar interests. They work like electronic bulletin boards with people posting and responding to messages. You also might want to get on a mailing list You do not have to "sign up" to read a newsgroup. Just "visit" the newsgroup by following one of the references, below. You also do not have to "sign up" to post a message. However, it is customary to read the newsgroup for a week or so to get a feel for what sort of things are expected.
    Homework Questions
Sometimes, students post articles to comp.lang.lisp asking about homework assignments. If you do this:
    • Make a serious effort at doing it yourself first
    • Show your work so far, including program code/input/output
    • Be specific about what has you stumped
Please remember that those who make an effort to answer your questions do so voluntarily; nobody owes you a reply. But if it's obvious that you've tried hard to solve the problem yourself, and haven't been able to get it quite right, then it's quite likely that you'll get help from some clever and experienced people.
    FAQ's and Archives
A compendium of answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Lisp and related topics from the comp.lang.lisp and compl.lang.clos newsgroups is maintained at the CMU Common Lisp Repository. Please check the FAQ before posting any questions to newsgroups. The Lisp FAQ is available online from

In this exercise you will obtain a public/private key pair for your personal use and send a test message.
    Choose your platform
Terminology note: Thawte, Verisign, and PGP are all about obtaining asymmetric keypairs. But they use somewhat different language to describe their products. In each case, realize that there is a private key that should be kept secret, and a public key that should be publicized.
    S/MIME via Thawte and Verisign
You can get a Thawte personal ID for free, while a Verisign ID will cost you $15 unless you go for the trial option and then cancel in time. You may use either for this assignment. The Verisign digital ID requires a credit card transaction, which gives them a mechanism to verify your name. A Verisign digital ID will say "Issued To: your name", while a free Thawte digital ID will say only "Issued To: Thawte Freemail Member" not terribly descriptive, but good enough for us. To get your ID, go to

Newsgroups are Internet forums, sort of like electronic bulletin boards, where you can post questions. You need an Internet connection, access to a newsserver (usually provided by your ISP), and some newsreader software. For a list of other popular ones including XNews and Gravity see newsreaders.com . Agent and Free agent support only a single newsserver. Xnews has no spell checker and can't send email since it does not support authentication. The sorts don't work and it cannot search message bodies. The author refuses to accept email. I am currently using Gravity. It is free, but unsupported. It does not have a proper undo in the editor, and it does not mesh with PGP signing properly. It also seems to lose messages and does not collect threads properly. groups.google.com The main Java newsgroups ones are: Java-related Newsgroups Newsgroup Purpose alt.html
