Singapore History Written accounts of the early history of Singapore are sketchy and the names used to refer to the country are varied. In the third century, a Chinese account gave reference to Singapore as Pu-luo-chung, or "island at the end of a peninsula". In 1320, however, the Mongol court sent a mission to a place called Long Yamen (Dragon's Tooth Strait) to get elephants. This probably referred to Keppel Harbour. A visitor from China, Wang Dayuan, who came around 1330, called the main settlement Pancur (spring), and reported that there were Chinese already living here. One of the earliest references to Singapore as Temasek, or Sea Town, was found in the Javanese Nagarakretagama' of 1365. The name was also mentioned in a Vietnamese source at around the same time. By the end of the 14th century, the Sanskrit name, Singapura (Lion City), became commonly used. At that time, Singapore was caught in the struggles between Siam (now Thailand) and the Java-based Majapahit Empire for control over the Malay Peninsula. According to the Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals), Singapore was defeated in one Majapahit attack, but Iskandar Shah, or Parameswara, a prince of Palembang, later killed the local chieftain and installed himself as the island's new ruler. Shortly after, he was driven out, either by the Siamese or by the Javanese forces of the Majapahit Empire. He fled north to Muar in the Malay Peninsula, where he founded the Malacca Sultanate. Singapore remained an important part of the Malacca Sultanate; it was the fief of the admirals (laksamanas), including the famous Hang Tuah.

Singapore Time and Date Singapore History Back to Top Humans have inhabited Singapore for about 2,000 years. The original seaport, Temasek, may have been a trading center in the Malay kingdom of Sri Vijaya until the 14th century, when title passed to the Javanese kingdom of Majapahit. The settlement most likely received the name Singapura (Sanskrit for “Lion City”) between the 11th and 14th centuries. It was destroyed in the late 1300s and replaced by Malacca (now Melaka) as the most important port in the area. For more than 400 years Singapore Island was inhabited only by a few Malays who lived in small fishing villages. Rajendra may have named the city Singapura (“Lion City”), later corrupted to Singapore, or the name may have been bestowed in the 14th century by Buddhist monks, to whom the lion was a symbolic character. According to the Sejarah Melayu, a Malay chronicle, the city was founded by the Srivijayan prince Sri Tri Buana; he is said to have glimpsed a tiger, mistaken it for a lion, and thus called the settlement Singapura.

Government: The parliament is unicameral; executive power nominally rests with the President, but effectively lies with the Prime Minister and the Cabinet. The presidency is a largely ceremonial post whose incumbent is elected by parliament to serve a six-year term. The 93-member Parliament is elected for a five-year term: apart from nine presidential appointees, its members are elected under a constituency system.

Singapore's History Singapore was founded in 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles, a 19th century British civil servant. He worked for the British East India Company and was looking for a trading post to counter the Dutch influence in the Southeast Asian region. Singapore was at the time only a tiny Malay fishing village, but proved to be the ideal spot due to the perfect geographical location. Singapore was at the crossroads of the East and West. It's simplicity yet ironic unpredictability soon turned it into the most popular sport on the island. Hardly surprising as this is the case everywhere except in the North America. Local Leagues were formed, while once the exclusive playground of the British presence, very soon locals were admitted too. The Leagues were highly popular and drew crowd by the thousands. Evolution of the Malaysia Cup The decades after 1930s marked the the start of the golden era in Singapore soccer. The Malaysian Cup competition was formed and the island being one of the state at that time were admitted. Singapore was always one of the strongest team. A total of 24 Championships were won. The Malaysian was immensely popular with the population, 50,000 fans were common in home games. 1965: Singapore Independence In 1965 political dispute erupted in the Malaysian Peninsular. Malaysian leaders wanted Malaysia to be ruled by Malays, Singapore leaders wanted Malaysia to be ruled by Malaysian irregardless of race, language or religion. Yes, you guessed it, Singapore leaders were not malays.

General Info Geography l History l People l Politics History Singapore was first mentioned in a 3rd Century Chinese account, which described it as "Pu-luo-chung", or island at the end of the peninsula. In the 7th Century, a Malayan Buddhist Empire was established on the island of Sumatra. Temasek (Sea Town) as Singapore was then known, was a prosperous trading outpost of this empire. However, it is said that in the 13th Century, a member of the Royal family, Sang Nila Utama, was searching for a site to build a new city. Arriving at the sandy shores of the island, he mistook a tiger for a lion. Taking this as a good omen, he decided to build his new city here, naming it Singapura, the Sanskrit words for Lion City. Singapore's modern name was thus born. During World War II in 1942, the security was rudely shattered when the Japanese invaded North Malaya and advanced towards Singapore. The British administration in Singapore surrendered on February 8, 1942. Under the Japanese ruling, Singapore was renamed Syonan (light of the South), and the commerce died down.

Sankyo International Singapore Regional Marketing Office was established on 2nd December, 1974. The office was housed at Goldhill Shopping Centre.
As regional activities continued to grow, more space was needed. We moved to Far East Shopping Centre.
Singapore office took a more prominent role in expanding the Asian and African markets. In order to better serve these growing markets, a local subsidiary was incorporated on 30th December, 1977 - SANKYO INTERNATIONAL (S) PTE LTD.
The establishment of Sankyo International (S) Pte Ltd at Hillview House.
As the patronage and support of our customers grew and Sankyo's name became more recognised in car air-conditioning circles, we acquired another warehouse in Paya Lebar.
This year saw another step in the widening scope of Sankyo's activities. Vending machines were introduced in the Singapore market. In order to ensure that this new concept received the fullest attention, Sanden Vending Pte Ltd, a local joint-venture company was incorporated in October for the sales and services of vending machines.
This is a year that will always be remembered, as Sankyo's dreams became realities with the construction of Sanden House. Not only did our staff enjoy the pleasant surroundings of the new office, but more important, it represents the completion of Sankyo's second SD-5 compressor manufacturing facility outside Japan.

Digging up Singapore's history
Associate Professor John Miksic, 54, recently led a team on an archaeological dig at the Bras Basah Park between Waterloo and Queen Street. The team discovered the brick foundations of a 19th century prison built, unexpectedly, on a swamp. Knowledge Enterprise spoke to Singapore's pioneer archaeologist, who lectures and researches on Southeast Asian studies in NUS. Assoc Prof John Miksic (left) with Mr Ridzwan Dzafir, head of the Malay Heritage Board. KE: Besides Bras Basah, where in Singapore have you dug and what are some of your interesting archaeological discoveries? JM: I've dug at Fort Canning, and continue to dig there. The hill was probably a palace in the 14th century; it contains many unusual artifacts, both local and Chinese. I dug at the site of the new Parliament House in 1994-95 and at Empress Place in 1998. All three sites yielded large quantities of artifacts dating back to the 14th century locally made pottery, Chinese porcelain and stoneware, coins, glass, etc. Colonial period sites I've dug include Duxton Hill, Istana Kampung Gelam, and now Bras Basah. There are many more potential sites, in particular in the area between the Esplanade, Stamford Road, Fort Canning, and the Singapore River.

History In Brief
Early records of Singapore are vague, though it seems to have been a small seaport during the period when the mighty Sumatran Sri Vijaya Empire ruled the whole region. According to the 16th-century Sejarah Melayu, or 'Malay Annals', Temasek, as it was then known, was a flourishing trading post in the 14th century. However, a contemporary Chinese account describes it as a pirate island. It was briefly ruled by the Sumatran prince Parameswara, but invasions by the Thais and Javanese in the 1390s drove him to flee north to Melaka to found the Malay Sultanate there. Singa Pura remained undeveloped until the arrival of Thomas Stamford Raffles.
Gazing over the Singapore River up which he sailed in January 1819 stands this white marble statue of Thomas Stamford Raffles, the city's visionary founder.

Sexual relationships in Singapore

If you are traveling to Singapore, you may be interested in sexual relationships with locals, and no, I do not mean the services of prostitutes or other commercial providers. While you can meet Singaporeans interested in sex accidentally, the chances of success are not particularly high if you are there only for a limited period of time. On the other hand, Singaporeans often are sexually attracted to foreign people. For young Singaporean women, it is chic to have a Western boyfriend. So, there must be a trick to overcome the time-consuming "accidental", and to link more effectively the sexual interests of foreign visitors with those of locals. Try the Internet. Or, more to the point: try www.AdultfriendsFinder.com . The service lists some 25,000 Singapore residents explicitly interested in non-commercial sexual relationships. While there are more males on the search than females, there are indeed an amazing number of women using the service. Listings are divided into categories: men seeking women, women seeking men, men seeking men, women seeking women, men seeking couples or groups, and women seeking couples or groups.
