APOLLO 13 LAUNCHED TO MOON: On April 11, 1970, Apollo 13, the third lunar landing mission, is successfully launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying astronauts James A. Lovell, John L. Swigert, and Fred W. Haise. The spacecraft's destination was the Fra Mauro highlands of the moon, where the astronauts were to explore the Imbrium Basin and conduct geological experiments. After an oxygen tank exploded on the evening of April 13, however, the new mission objective became to get the Apollo 13 crew home alive. At 9:00 p.m. EST on April 13, Apollo 13 was just over 200,000 miles from Earth. The crew had just completed a television broadcast and was inspecting Aquarius, the Landing Module (LM). The next day, Apollo 13 was to enter the moon's orbit, and soon after, Lovell and Haise would become the fifth and sixth men to walk on the moon. At 9:08 p.m., these plans were shattered when an explosion rocked the spacecraft. Oxygen tank No. 2 had blown up, disabling the normal supply of oxygen, electricity, light, and water. Lovell reported to mission control: "Houston, we've had a problem here," and the crew scrambled to find out what had happened. Several minutes later, Lovell looked out of the left-hand window and saw that the spacecraft was venting a gas, which turned out to be the Command Module's (CM) oxygen. The landing mission was aborted.

    Prelude to Operation Overlord
During the first six months of 1944, the United States and Great Britain concentrated land, naval, and air forces in England to prepare for Operation Overlord, the assault on Hitler's "Fortress Europe." While the Soviet Union tied down a great portion of the enemy's forces, the western Allies marshaled their resources, trained their forces, separately and jointly, for the operation, and fine tuned the invasion plans to take full advantage of their joint and combined capabilities. Before the invasion, the air and sea components played major roles. The 12,000 planes of the Allied air forces swept the Luftwaffe from the skies, photographed enemy defenses, dropped supplies to the resistance, bombed railways, attacked Germany's industries and isolated the battlefield. The Allies' naval component was similarly active during the buildup. The navies escorted convoys, patrolled and protected the English Channel, reconnoitered beaches and beach defenses, conducted amphibious rehearsals and organized and loaded a mighty flotilla to land the assault forces in France. Meanwhile, the nine army divisions (three airborne and six infantry) from the United States, Britain and Canada trained and rehearsed their roles in the carefully choreographed operation. Rangers climbed cliffs, engineers destroyed beach obstacles, quartermasters stockpiled supplies and infantrymen waded through the English surf as each honed the skills necessary for the invasion's success.

First American Flag(1777) By the begining of the 1770's Georgia was the least populated of the 13 American colonies. Of the 50,000 inhabitants, half were slaves, and almost all of it's citizens were clustered near the coast. As events to the north began to lead to war with Britain, Georgia, for the most part, continued with business as usual. When the colonial representatives began convening The Continental Congress, Georgia reluctantly sent delegates. In 1776, this Congress signed the Declaration of Independence. The Georgians that signed this document were: Button Gwinnett Lyman Hall George Walton The early years of the American Revolution were quiet in Georgia. In 1778 new orders from London marked out the south as the main theater of war. British warships that had been sailing off the New York Harbor headed to the South Carolina and Georgia coast. Major General Provost took Savannah with little resistance and converted the small community back to the British. For a brief time the Georgia assembly met under the authority of the British crown. Provost expanded his control of Georgia to Augusta and Sunbury, and with the Cherokees support in northwest Georgia he effectively controlled all of the state.

The Results of General Longstreet's Move into Upper East Tennessee
by David C. Smith In eastern Tennessee during the winter of 1863/64, General Longstreet's Confederates and the Federal Army might have remained in their winter camps without fighting except for one glaring fact; the Federal authorities had declared East Tennessee free of Confederate control after Longstreet was defeated by General Burnside at the Battle of Knoxville. President Lincoln celebrated in Washington and declared Burnside a national hero. Now all this had been negated by Longstreet's decision to remain. It was very embarrassing to the Federal authorities and particularly threatening to the Unionist population of East Tennessee. It could not be tolerated and General Grant was emphatic - Longstreet must be driven out!

The raising of the American flag over the walled city of Derna, Tripoli in April 1805 by Lieutenant Presley N. O'Bannon signaled to the world that the young republic was not reticent about defending or pursuing its national interests beyond the borders of North America. Although American interest in the area throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was often sporadic, post-World War II foreign policy considerations have made Mediterranean waters a fact of life for the Marine Corps since the 1940s.

The dream of the establishment of a Jewish university in the Land of Israel was part and parcel of the early Zionist vision. With the acquisition of the Gray Hill estate atop Mount Scopus, and the laying of the cornerstone for the university-to-be in 1918, the realization of the dream was on its way. Seven years later, on April 1, 1925, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem was opened at a gala ceremony attended, among others, by leaders of world Jewry including the University's founding father, Chaim Weizmann, distinguished academic and communal figures, and British dignitaries including Lord Balfour, Viscount Allenby and Sir Herbert Samuel. The University's first three research institutes were in microbiology, chemistry and Jewish studies, with a total of 33 faculty members and 141 students. A teaching program was inaugurated soon after. In 1931 the University awarded its first degrees, the Master of Arts, to 13 graduates, to be followed by the awarding of Ph.D. and B.A. degrees. By 1947, the University had grown to the stature of a large, well established research and teaching institution. It comprised faculties or other units in humanities, science, medicine, education and agriculture, (the last at a campus in Rehovot); the Jewish National and University Library; a University press; and an adult education center. Student enrollment exceeded 1,000 and there were some 200 members of the faculty.
