Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

Alpine Skiing: Kostelic Leads Rush To Alpine Gold
Croatia's Janica Kostelic raised the Olympic bar for alpine skiing by claiming four Olympic medals in a single Games, and also matched the records of Jean-Claude Killy (FRA) and Toni Sailer (AUT) by claiming three golds.

Janica Kostelic of Croatia competes in the women's slalom during the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games at the Deer Valley Resort.
Kostelic wasn't the only succesful skier during the two weeks of alpine competition. Men's World Cup overall points leader Stephan Eberharter (AUT) won a medal of each color, capping his Olympics with a dominating performance in winning the giant slalom. He claimed a bronze behind teammate Fritz Strobl (AUT) in the Games' most prestigious event, the men's downhill, then settled for silver behind record-setting Kjetil Andre Aamodt (NOR), who also won the combined gold to push his unprecedented medal haul to seven.
Bode Miller (USA) provided much of the best slalom skiing during the Games. A scintillating second run of slalom moved him up to a silver-medal finish in the combined, and a strong second run gave him a second silver in the giant slalom behind Eberharter.

History of Skiing
Nicola Werdenigg Before skis were used for fun and leisure, the ski was used for work and transportation. The oldest known version is a wide, short ski found in Sweden that has been shown to be over 4500 years old, and cave and rock drawings suggest that skis were used even long before then. These first skis may have been used by a hunter or a traveler, as they were commonly used during the long winters in Northern Russia and the Scandinavian countries. Early skis were not made for speed, but to designed to keep a traveler on top of the snow as they went about their business.
The people from the Telemark area of Norway have been largely credited with developing skiing into a sport, somewhere in the early 1700's. They invented the Telemark and the Christiana (now known as the Christie) turns as methods of artfully controlling speeds on downhill descents. They were also quite fond of jumping. Thus, disciplines in both alpine and Nordic skiing owe their existence to these early pioneers.
The distinction that now we make between the different disciplines of skiing was not made centuries ago. All of the early skis had a boot mounted to the ski only at the toe, with the heel free to move up and down, what we now call a Nordic ski.

The combined event consists of a downhill and two slalom runs. Seizinger, 25, is only the second woman to win triple golds and now has joined Swiss Vreni Schneider in the Olympic history books. The German bomber , who won seven World Cup downhill and Super G races this season, with a six-in-a-row streak, lay down two flawless runs today in a combined time of 2:40.74. February 17, 2002 The Italian women claimed two medals in a single alpine skiing event for the first time in Olympic history, as Daniela Ceccarelli skied to gold and Karen Putzer claimed bronze in the women's super G on Sunday. "In the World Cup I always ran close to the podium area, but never a victory. So therefore for me, today, it was certainly a big surprise," Ceccarelli said. "Even though while I was coming down, I realized I was doing well. I must say I felt very well today, even before starting. "This is a disappointment for the Austrian team. It is difficult to be Olympic champions. Everyone works so hard for us. Yes, there is a lot of pressure..."

Medal Goal Achieved for U.S.
PARK CITY, Utah (Feb. 25) - U.S. Ski and Snowboard athletes wrapped up the 2002 Olympic Winter Games with a list of record Olympic performances and achieved the organization's long-stated goal of winning a record 10 medals. "This was a team effort and we take a great deal of pride in the accomplishments of these athletes and especially in achieving our team goal," said U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team President and CEO Bill Marolt. Marolt established the 10-medal goal over three years ago - four more than the previous high mark of six set in Nagano. "We knew coming into these Games that 10 medals was a stretch goal for us, but our athletes achieved it," he said. "Bode Miller's silvers in alpine skiing are a tremendous accomplishment," said Marolt. "And, much as we had expected, snowboard and freestyle continue to be very strong sports for us. We're also very pleased with the progress we saw in the nordic events, especially nordic combined, where we had U.S. bests in all three of the events, including a fourth in the team competition, and cross country skiing where we had Olympic bests on both the men's and women's side including a fifth for the men in the relay!" It was a record-setting Olympics in nearly every sport for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team including:

The brash, 24-year-old dazzled the world at the 1968 Winter Games in Grenoble, France , by winning gold medals in all three Alpine skiing events. He is only the second skier to ever accomplish that feat (Austria's Toni Sailer did it in 1956), and since then no skier has won more than two Alpine events at any one Olympic Games. The sweep did not come without controversy, however. In the slalom, Haakon Mjoen of Norway and Karl Schranz of Austria both posted better times than Killy but were disqualified for missing gates.

HISTORY OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES Beginning in 776 B.C., the Olympic Games were held in the Valley of Olympia in Greece as a religious festival involving one event, a stade race held over 192 meters. By about 650 B.C., the Ancient Games were held over five days, involving running, wrestling, the pentathlon, horse riding and chariot racing. Athletes competed in the nude and upon victory were awarded a crown of wild olive leaves. Women and slaves were strictly forbidden to attend the Games under the punishment of death. In between, the 1976 Games were boycotted by 32 nations - most of them from black Africa - because the IOC did not ban New Zealand who earlier had toured racially-segregated South Africa in a rugby tournament. The 1980 Games were boycotted by 64 nations, led by the USA, to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan on Dec 27, 1979. The 1984 were boycotted by 14 communist Eastern Bloc nations, led by the USSR, as revenge for 1980.

How The Olympic Games Began
Nearly 3,000 years of Olympic history
The Olympics first started nearly 3,000 years ago in Ancient Greece . The ancient Greek civilization enjoyed many sports—including running, boxing and wrestling—because they believed physical activity and competition were very important. Every Greek boy was expected to participate in sports , because the Greeks believed the skills they learned in sports would make them better warriors.
In honour of Zeus
The ancient Greeks also believed religion was very important. Zeus was their greatest god. The ancient Greeks built a shrine to honour Zeus in the Valley of Olympia. Greeks gathered at the shrine to play their favourite sports as part of their religious ceremonies.
In 776 B.C. the ancient Greeks first recorded the results from their sporting events held in honour of Zeus. Every four years after that these Games were held, and because they took place in the Valley of Olympia , they became known as the Olympic Games
Sports in ancient Greece
Sports in the ancient Games usually included:

Until then, here are some of the highlights:
  • Speed Skating – Short Track: Marc Gagnon has won the most medals by a Canadian athlete in the Winter Olympics with five medals. He and Philip Edwards (Athletics) share the highest medal count by a Canadian Olympian. Marc Gagnon and Jonathon Guilmette finished first and second in the 500m – the second time for Canada in the Winter Olympics and the third time in Canadian Olympic history. Marc Gagnon tied Gaétan Boucher with three medals in one Olympic Winter Games, with both winning two gold and a bronze. Isabelle Charest and Marc Gagnon are the first athletes to win medals in three consecutive Olympic Winter Games.
Freestyle Skiing: Veronica Brenner and Deidra Dionne became the first Canadian women to win medals in Freestyle Skiing with silver and bronze medals, respectively, in Aerials.
