Ross Powers (USA), the Americans made Olympic history on February 11 with the first medals sweep in the history of Olympic snowboarding. American-invented sport of snowboarding although France isn't far behind.
Led by gold medalist Ross Powers (USA), the Americans made Olympic history on February 11 with the first medals sweep in the history of Olympic snowboarding. Danny Kass (USA) took the silver and Jarret "J.J." Thomas won bronze as the trio completed the first USA medals sweep in any sport at an Olympic Winter Games since men's figure skating in 1956.
The fourth American competitor, Tommy Czeschin, finished sixth.
Ironically, it was Czeschin who set the pace for the Americans during qualifying, posting the second-highest score behind 2001 world junior champion Heikki Sorsa (FIN) on the first run. But after a lackluster first-run performance, his teammates managed to regroup and charge through the second run of qualifying, posting the top three scores in that round and earning their shot at the medals round.
Powers soared above the field on his first run in the finals, linking back-to-back McTwists and adding a spectacular Cab cork-720 to impress the judges. The score stood up through the second round as neither Sorsa nor the remainder of the field could approach it. Sorsa finished seventh.

Downhill Where: Snowbasin When: Feb. 10-23 World view: Herman Maier won't be here, but that doesn't mean the Austrians won't be strong. Stephan Eberharter has dominated the World Cup circuit and is a favorite in the downhill and Super G. Norwegian veteran Kjetil Andre Aamodt could be back on the medal stand as well, along with teammate Lasse Kjus, who was second in the downhill and combined in Nagano. Another who could move up in Maier's absence is Switzerland's Didier Cuche. On the women's side, Michaela Dorfmeister of Austria leads the World Cup standings but could face challenges from teammate Renate Goetschl, Germany's Hilde Gerg, Switzerland's Sonja Nef, and Italy's Isolde Kostner. US outlook: Bode Miller has taken the spotlight this World Cup season, winning four events for the best performance by a US skier since Phil Mahre in 1983. Miller has to be among the favorites in the slalom and giant slalom. In his shadow is Daron Rahlves, who stunned the Austrians with his victory in the Super G at last year's world championships. It would be a lovely story for Picabo Street to end her Olympic career with a downhill medal but don't count on it, her best finish this season is a fifth in Calgary. More likely to take the stand is Kristina Koznick in the slalom.

Fastest Non-Motorized Sport ON Earth
History of Alpine Skiing Before skis were used for fun and leisure, the ski was used for work and transportation. The oldest known version is a wide, short ski found in Sweden that has been shown to be over 4500 years old , and cave and rock drawings suggest that skis were used even long before then. These first skis may have been used by a hunter or a traveler, as they were commonly used during the long winters in Northern Russia and the Scandinavian countries. Early skis were not made for speed, but to designed to keep a traveler on top of the snow as they went about their business. The people from the Telemark area of Norway have been largely credited with developing skiing into a sport, somewhere in the early 1700's. They invented the Telemark and the Christiana (now known as the Christie) turns as methods of artfully controlling speeds on downhill descents. They were also quite fond of jumping. Thus, disciplines in both alpine and Nordic skiing owe their existence to these early pioneers. The distinction that now we make between the different disciplines of skiing was not made centuries ago. All of the early skis had a boot mounted to the ski only at the toe, with the heel free to move up and down, what we now call a Nordic ski.

The origins of luge are very old, and it is necessary to go back to 800 AD to find the first accounts of the sport. The luge was used in Norway, near Oslo, as a means of transport and as a toy. Later, it appeared in Scandinavian stories from the 16th century from the Erz valleys in Norway. Czech miners also used them to move down the mountains. From the icy slopes of Russia to an Olympic sport
In the 1700's in St Petersburg, events were held on the city's icy hills and on rudimentary artificial tracks. The sport spread throughout Europe and in 1883, the first official competition was held at Davos in Switzerland, with 21 competitors. Nevertheless, the first world championships weren't held until 1955 in Oslo. Fifty two athletes from eight countries competed in the event. Recognition of luge as an official sport came in 1957, with the founding of the International Luge Federation (FIL), and its inclusion as an Olympic sport in 1964. Champions roll
The luge champions roll is dominated by the Austrians, as well as the Germans and includes great athletes such as Thomas Kohler and Georg Hackl. At the Calgary Olympic Games, East Germany dominated the luge medal tally, while at Albertville in 1992, Austria and Germany took away eight out of nine medals. Italy has produced champions of the calibre of Paul Hildgartner, Olympian at Lillehammer, and Armin Zoeggeller, who won gold at Salt Lake City in 2002. For the second time in Winter Olympic history, the USA took medals home in the luge event, with a silver and bronze in the men's pairs at Salt Lake City.

A History of the Winter Olympics THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
When Utah's Olympics unfold in February, so too will the latest chapter of a story that began in 1924 in Chamonix, the little French town at the foot of Mt. Blanc.
In more than three quarters of a century, the history of the winter Games has played out in such snowy wonderlands as St. Moritz, Innsbruck, Sapporo, and Lake Placid. The plot has twisted around engaging personalities: figure skaters Sonja Henie, Dick Button and Peggy FLeming; skiiers Jean-Claude Killy, Toni Sailer and Rosi Mittermaier; speedskater Eric Heiden.
In 1980 there was a miracle, just when the United States seemed in need of one. In 1936, there was nationalism of another sort as Adolph Hitler presided over the Opening Ceremony. There has been the Harding and Kerrigan soap opera, the triumph of Dan Jansen, the larger-than-life Hermannator and Tomba.

People began strapping skis to their feet as far back as 5,000 years ago. It is believed that Norwegians were the first they used skis as a way of hunting across snow-covered terrain. From Norway, skiing expanded throughout Scandinavia and Russia as a mode of winter transportation and eventually as a sport similar to cross-country skiing. Women's Hockey History
While women's hockey might seem to be a relatively recent phenomenon, its history actually stretches back into the late-19th century, and until the Second World War, was considered a sport for both sexes. Since the resurgence of the women's game in the 1980's, the game's recent history has been largely a story of just two countries - the United States and Canada.
