From Other Guides Women in Olympic Sports Stamp Collecting Elsewhere on the Web Sun Valley, Idaho In a time when women were not encouraged to take part in elite-level sports, Gretchen Fraser was the epitome of a great champion. Alpine skiing for men and women was introduced to the Olympics in 1936 and in the first Winter Games after World War II she became the first U.S. skier (man or woman) to win an Olympic medal, with a gold in slalom and combined silver in 1948 at St. Moritz, Switzerland. Gretchen Fraser died on the eve of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. She grew up in Vancouver, Washington, but lived more than a half-century in Sun Valley, Idaho, where she met and taught many World War II amputees how to ski. Now the US Ski Team, and Sun Valley ski resort, home to Gretchen Fraser, are leading the movement to have her achievements honored in the first American postage stamp to feature a champion skier. Sun Valley already pays homage to her with "Gretchens Gold" a downhill run on Bald Mountain, popularly used for training by modern US Olympic skiers.

USA GETS BLANKED IN DOWNHILL AND CROSSCOUNTRY SKIING - While the US team was figured for medals in the downhills or cross country, they were hoping for a good showing with Todd Lodwick's Nordic Combined finish. Samppa Lajunen of Finland won the gold medal in the Nordic combined Sunday after finishing first in the 15-kilometer cross-country race J aakko Tallus, also of Finland, won the silver and Felix Gottwald of Austria won the bronze. But, T odd Lodwick of Steamboat Springs, Colo., was seventh, the highest finish for an American in the sport's Olympic history. "It's a little bit disappointing, because I had expectations of moving up," said Lodwick, who started seventh, 2 minutes and 15 seconds behind the leader. "Of course, I would have liked to have a medal around my neck, but taking the best American finish back to Steamboat, that's something I'm proud of." Americans Matt Dayton and Bill Demong were 18th and 19th, respectively. The other American in the event, Johnny Spillane, was 32nd. Rolf Monsen's ninth-place showing in 1932 was the previous best finish for a U.S. athlete.

In Austria, skiing is king Posted: Friday January 18, 2002 12:00 PM
To reach the Austrian town of Kitzbuehel, you exit the A12 Autobahn at Worgl and find Route 170, a two-lane highway that meanders for nearly 20 miles through a wonderland of quaint villages, each with its own Skischule, each with its own small chairlift, T-bar or rope tow, each with several shops in which to buy, rent or tune skis. In all of these villages, the streets are jammed with skiers. Children and their parents, teenagers and their buds, senior citizens. The sample cuts across every demographic. They can be seen clomping through the center of town in ski boots, carrying a pair of Volkls or Atomics over their shoulders, poles in their free hands. There are hillsides that have no lift, yet the pristine white snow is carved by distinctive S turns. Turns out that Austrians commonly drive up narrow roads to the back side of hills that have no lift, then ski down the front. Once. There are many ways to measure a nation's passion for sport. In the United States, Starter jackets and replica jerseys are a good indication. To be a grown man wearing a $250

Olympic champion Cretier retires from Alpine skiing
Click here for more on this story Posted: Tuesday June 06, 2000 04:27 PM Jean-Luc Cretier cited his desire to spend more time with his family as a reason for his retirement. Jed Jacobsohn/Allsport LYON, France (Reuters) Olympic downhill champion Jean-Luc Cretier announced his retirement from Alpine skiing on Tuesday at the age of 34. "As the international federation didn't want to give me a wild card for the next World Cup season and having just left the clinic where I had surgery to clean up my knee, I thought there were too many obstacles for a comeback," Cretier said. Cretier, who won the Olympic title at the Nagano Games in Japan in 1998, said he wanted to dedicate more time to his family and would also organize company skiing weekends. Cretier had a bad fall in a World Cup downhill at Val Gardena, Italy, in December 1998, suffering multiple knee injuries which kept him out of skiing for two seasons.

How to Photograph Olympic Sports.
Regardless of whether you are one of the millions of lucky spectators, camera in hand, at the 2002 Winter Olympics, or you are at your local high school hockey game, here are some tips from the New York Institute of Photography at www.nyip.com to help you take exciting pictures at your favorite winter sporting events. According to Chuck DeLaney, Dean of the world's largest photography school, "These tips will help you get great photos regardless of whether you are at the Olympics or your child's hockey game."
If you're way back in the stands, you'll need a long lens 200mm or longer and use a tripod if allowed to steady the shot and fast film to stop the action ISO 800 is a good choice. Hint: When something exciting happens, everybody stands up! So if you’re sitting in crowded stands, don't be surprised that at the height of action, when something is actually worth photographing, the guy in front of you jumps up and gets in your way. The solution is to try and sit where there is no one in front of you, which might happen at a local game, but certainly won’t be an option at the major venues in Salt Lake City.
Indoors, don't use a flash. Most indoor arenas don't allow it because it can distract the athletes. Rather, take advantage of the arena lights, which can provide adequate lighting if you use fast film.

Before 1924
Because of its popularity in England, figure skating was on the program for the 1908 Olympic Games in London. When Antwerp, Belgium, hosted the 1920 Olympics after World War II, there was competition in both ice hockey and figure skating. Those sports could, of course, be conducted in rinks during the Summer Games. But other winter sports that were becoming popular in Northern Europe and the Alpine regions, such as skiing and bobsledding, obviously had to stay outdoors. After 1920, national governing bodies for such sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics. Top of Page
1924: Chamonix, France
The town of Chamonix, in the French Alps, planned a winter sports festival in 1924, when Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac, a member of the International Olympic Committee, proposed to the IOC that the festival be formally recognized as the Winter Olympic Games. Another Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, was opposed to the idea. However, the IOC agreed that Chamonix could call its festival a "Olympic winter carnival."

History 1972 Winter Olympics (XI) Sapporo, Japan
February 3-February 13 Participants: 1006(800 Men, 206 Women), 35 Nations Final Torchbearer: Hideki Takada Thirty-two years after it was supposed to host the Olympic Winter Games which were canceled due to WWII Sapporo got another chance. Japanese athletes took the chance to perform in front of their home crowds, and dazzled with a complete medal sweep of the 70-meter ski-jumping event. Among the other sensational stars of the Games were Dutch speed skater Ard Schenk, who won three gold medals and nearly missed a fourth when he tripped in the 500m, Soviet cross-county skier Galina Kulakova swept all three women's events, and Swiss teen-ager Marie-Theres Nadig upset all favorites to win both the downhill and giant slalom. In the slalom, American Barbara Ann Cochran took America's first alpine gold since 1952. The U.S. hockey team managed to claim a silver behind the invincible Soviets, who once again took gold. The Canadians boycotted the hockey competition to protest what they felt were unfair definitions of professionals. NHL players were not allowed to play in the Olympics, however the Eastern-Bloc countries' professionals were allowed to play.
