The Burden of Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 1 million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in 2002. The three major types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Although basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas can be cured if detected and treated early, these cancers can cause considerable damage and disfigurement. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, causing more than 75% of all skin cancer deaths. About 53,600 people in the United States will be diagnosed with a melanoma skin cancer in 2002, and approximately 7,400 will die. Exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays appears to be the most important environmental factor in the development of skin cancer. Skin cancer can be prevented when sun-protective practices are used consistently. UV rays from artificial sources of light, such as tanning beds and sun lamps, are just as dangerous as those from the sun, and should also be avoided. Although both tanning and burning can increase a person’s risk for skin cancer, most Americans do not consistently protect themselves from UV rays. A recent survey sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that approximately 43% of white children under age 12 experienced at least one sunburn during the past year.

A new study found that 60 percent of young adults in America report suffering a sunburn in the past year. That compares to about 32 percent of adults overall. The study concluded that nationwide and statewide skin cancer prevention efforts should target young adults.

S kin Cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and usually occurs in fair-skinned individuals who have been exposed to the sun, x-rays, or ultraviolet (UV) light for prolonged periods. Skin cancers affect approximately 600,000 Caucasians every year.    T he principal cause of skin cancer almost universally accepted by medical experts is overexposure to sunlight, especially when it results in sunburn and blistering. Avoiding sun overexposure is the best defense against skin cancer. And, catching problems early, provides a better chance for successful treatment.

Sunburn and skin cancer
Skin cancer has reached epidemic proportions in Australia. Currently one in two Australians will develop the disease at some stage during their lives. There are three reasons why our levels of skin cancer are so high; our mainly fair-skinned population, Australia's harsh climate and our love for the great outdoors. Sunburn is not the only cause of skin cancer. Tanning or just too much sun, year after year, can also lead to people developing the disease. Skin cancer is very easy to prevent and can be treated successfully in 95% of cases if detected early. To find out more about sunburn, tanning and skin cancer, choose from our menu below or search this site for specific information. Sunburn Tanning Solariums Skin Cancer ... SunSmart

Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer which, if not removed earlywhile it is thin, spreads internally and is usually fatal.
http://www.skincheck.com/
The Melanoma Education Foundation is a non-profit organization with the mission of saving lives from this common and tragic disease by emphasizing the importance of monthly self-examination of the skin to detect melanoma while it is thin and curable. We are especially interested in reaching teens and young adults, who are often unaware of melanoma and their vulnerability to it. We also want to educate parents who, by acting now, can prevent the tragedy of melanoma from affecting their children as adults. The Foundation was established by the family of Daniel N. Fine of Peabody, Massachusetts, who lost his life to melanoma in October, 1998 at the age of 26.
Our primary means of communication is by your e-mail referral of our web site to other people. If you find the information in this site useful please urge others you care about to visit the site. Downloadable literature, which can be saved and printed, then distributed or posted, is located in the "How You Can Save Lives" section. We have many volunteer opportunities; if you would like to help please contact us for details. Correspondence may be mailed to the Melanoma Education Foundation, P.O. Box 2023, Peabody, MA 01960. WHAT IS SKIN CANCER?
It is a disease where cancer ( malignant ) cells are found in the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). Skin cancers can develop from a build-up of sun exposure over the years. There are 3 types of skin cancer.
1. Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that occurs on areas exposed to the sun. People with fair complexions who do not tan easily, are most at risk. Basal cell cancers do not usually spread through the body although it can spread below to the bone. Normally it's not life threatening but should be treated immediately.
Causes: Overexposure to ultra violet (UV) rays of the sun.
Diagnosis: Biopsy which is the removal by surgery of a sample of tissue for examination under a microscope to check forcancer. This is a simple and quick procedure. If the growth was only partially removed by the biopsy and is found to be cancerous, then the entire growth will be removed.
Warning Signs: How do you identify basal cell carcinoma?

10 April 2000. Updated every WEEKDAY. Skin Cancer buried in toolbars insulted by assistants Inevitably, he's wrong. Long relegated to the back seat of the software development process in favor of ever-more useless features, usability has recently been chloroformed, hog-tied and stuffed in the trunk. Exhibit A: the newly prereleased "Skins" are a recent product of the hyper-democratization of code. The computer equivalent of back-ally chin tucks, skins allow a growing number of applications to change their looks in a growing number of ways, almost all of them bad . In a scenario that undoubtedly leaves DeTocqueville twitching uncomfortably in his grave, an unthinking Jolt- and marketing dragged into the skin game about a year ago, and the scars on our own skins still haven't healed. Though extreme software customization can be traced back to usability nightmares like desktop themes No problem . If you're willing to ignore the fact that the software becomes unusable because you can't see anything, then a few clicks of the mouse will set you right up. If an aesthetic unit of the face is involved, such as eyelids, nose, cheeks, lips, ears, or neck, sometimes plastic surgery resection with immediate reconstruction is the best choice. He is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon practicing in Houston, Texas for the last twenty years and has performed thousands of skin cancer surgeries. 99% of the surgeries are done on an out-patient, day surgery basis with frozen section pathology immediately available. 99% of these procedures are done under local anaesthesia with sedation and 99% are reconstructed immediately after resection.
